MULKEYTOWN -- Doris Maxine Poe, 88, passed away at 2:37 a.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014, in Fairview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Du Quoin. Doris was a homemaker. She had worked at Brock's Walgreen Drug Store as a fountain manager. Doris had also been employed at Country Set as a seamstress and at Diner Bell Restaurant as a cook. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Du Quoin. She was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Perry County, the daughter of Curtis Benjamin and Minnie Ellen (Morris) Gant. She married William H. Gerstenschlager in 1940 in Missouri and he preceded her in death in 1943. She then married Herman D. Poe in 1945 in Metropolis and he preceded her in death in 1990. She is survived by six children, Shirley Anheuser and husband, Richard, of Du Quoin, Fay Sulcer and husband, Bill, of Sesser, Judy Heape and husband, Doug, of Tamaroa, Jane Southerd and husband, Bill, of Christopher, James "Jim" Poe and wife, Terri, of Mulkeytown and Jerry Poe and wife, Peggy, of Mulkeytown; special friend, Clyde Treadwell of Mulkeytown; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; three brothers, Wesley Gant, Curtis Gant and Arthur Gant; one sister, Lois Farthing; one grandson, Justin Diuguid; and one great-grandson, Tyler Jones. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Chaplain Mike Allen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin. Connie (Riddle) Cremeens, 66, of West Frankfort, Illinois departed this life and earned her wings at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital – St. Louis, Missouri.This sweet lady was born January 13, 1948 to Roy Robert and Mildred (Todd) Riddle.She married Dwight Cremeens, who survives, on May 24, 1991 in Paducah, Kentucky.Facts of Interest: Connie worked several years at a local agency that assisted and cared for the elderly. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Connie was a child of God. She loved and adored her family. She liked drawing, enjoyed cooking for her family, and loved shopping. She and Dwight raised 4 beautiful daughters.Preceded in death by: Parents; her brothers, Bobby John Riddle and Harry E. Riddle.Survivors include her husband, Dwight Cremeens of West Frankfort; daughters: Tonya Fitch, Candida Conley, Amy Cremeens Smith all of West Frankfort, Leanne Cremeens (Greg) Ward of Fenton, MO. Vernon, IL; three sisters: Middy (Bill) Hebbeler of Zeigler, Imogene Shelton of Mt. Jenea Dawn Clark, age 37, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 7:33 a.m. in her home surrounded her by loving family. Jenea was born on October 22, 1976 in Pinckneyville, IL, a daughter to Jeff and Patsy (Bass) Shute. On June 29, 2012, she married Douglas Clark in Old DuQuoin Baptist Church, DuQuoin, IL and he survives. Jenea was a member of Old DuQuoin Baptist Church, DuQuoin, IL and worked as a dental hygienist for Beard and Holmen LTD in Waterloo, IL for 16 years. She enjoyed dancing, singing, fishing and attending her kids sporting events. Jenea loved her children and husband very much. James D. Gunter, 80, of Christopher, IL, died at 4:25 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 surrounded by his family at Herrin Hospital, Herrin, IL. She grew up in Bakersfield, Calif., graduated from East Bakersfield High in 1949, and went on to Stanford University, graduating with honors in 1953. That same year she married the love of her life, Bill Benjamin Brayfield, a Stanford alum and Korean War officer. After his service in the U.S. and abroad, they attended Columbia University, and Clo earned an MSW. Besides a long career as a clinical and school social worker in New York City and Connecticut, she volunteered countless hours to local and national education, community, civil rights, and political causes, including the desegregation of the Hartford region public schools. In addition, while raising four daughters, Clo earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of Massachusetts in 1978. As a program administrator for CREC in Hartford, Conn., she helped design and oversee regional special education programs that served infants through adults. After retiring from CREC, Clo became a Special Education Surrogate Parent, advocating tirelessly for foster children in Connecticut public schools. She also enjoyed traveling the world, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, going to the movies and new restaurants, and visiting with family and friends. In 2008, she moved to Wake Robin in Vermont, making many friends there. A lifelong lover of cats, she volunteered at the Humane Society of Chittenden County, and was named Adult Volunteer of the Year in 2010. Besides giving her time, Clo donated generously to numerous organizations that supported human and animal rights. She will be greatly missed for her passion for learning, warm friendship, keen wit and intelligence, activism, and practical advice, and even more as the matriarch of a big and busy clan. Clotean is survived by her daughters, Liesse Brayfield, Maris BrayfieldKittell, and Mary-Elizabeth Sciorra; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her cat, Amber. WEST FRANKFORT -- Rena Monaghan, 97, died at 1:25 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, in Stonebridge Senior Living Center in Benton. She was born June 8, 1916, in Thurber, Texas, to Umberto and Lucrezia (Galli) Bonacorsi. She married Charles Monaghan Jr. on Aug. 31, 1940, in Paducah. He preceded her in death March 7, 1972. Rena worked for many years as a clerk, first at Sears and then at Ben Franklin, retiring when the store moved to Marion. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in West Frankfort. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; parents; sisters, Cecilia Tresso and Gina Colussi and brother, Armando Bonacorsi. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Danny) Wilson and Nancy (Noel) Summers; grandchildren, Danny L. Wilson, Charles (Deborah) Wilson, Stacy (Stacey) Grimes, Hayley (Tracey) Grimes, Libby (Jacob) Garza; great- grandchildren, Brittany Scales, Bailee Wilson, Sophie Wilson, Kiersten and Lily Grimes, Gabriella Garza, and Kennedy and baby Walker Grimes who is due to arrive any day; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, in St. Mark's Episcopal Church in West Frankfort, with the Revs. Sherry Black and Charles Wilson officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Union Funeral Home. Interment will be in Tower Heights Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Rena's name to VNA-Tip Hospice, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Envelopes will be available and accepted at the funeral home. MULKEYTOWN -- Walter Leroy Medvrich Sr., passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014. He was born Feb. 6, 1935. He is survived by his loving wife, lifetime companion and mother of three sons, Milles Evelyn Medvrich. He was a friend to countless people. Walter was a Mason. He was preceded in death by sons, Walter Leroy Medvrich Jr., and Michael Medvrich. WEST FRANKFORT -- James David "Jim" Herron, 69, of Sanduksy, Ohio, formerly of Southern Illinois, died at his home Thursday, March 20, 2014, after a battle with cancer. Known as "J.D." to many, he was born Aug. 22, 1944, in West Frankfort, to Ernest and Susan (Stearns) Herron. He married Dianne Hagen in Ocean Shores, Wash., on Dec. 31, 1979. J.D. will be remembered as a wonderful family man who enjoyed working on cars and fishing. He was also a talented artist and guitarist. J.D. will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to meet him. He was so full of life. His creativity and sense of humor were bar none. Survivors include his wife, Dianne Herron of Sandusky; his children, Sean of St. Charles, Mo.; Jennifer of Lakewood, Ohio; and Patrick of Perrysburg, Ohio; his grandchildren, Riley Herron and Sydney Schmidt; his brother, Thomas William "Bill" Herron of Cambria; his sister and brother-in-law, Donna Marie (Herron) and Gene Biggs of Paducah, Ky.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. J.D. was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law, Betty Herron and Karen Herron; nephew, Johnny Herron, and niece Jill (Biggs) White. J.D. requested not to have services for his passing but would rather everyone celebrate his memories and life at a later date in the family's home in Perkins Township. This is his Wife's DR. CLOTEAN H. BRAYFIELD - SHELBURNE - Dr. Clotean H. Brayfield, 81, a longtime resident of Windsor, Conn., and recently of Shelburne, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. Clo was born on Nov. 4, 1931, in San Bernadino, Calif., to William Gordon Helm and Myrtle A. (Kleeberger) Helm. She grew up in Bakersfield, Calif., graduated from East Bakersfield High in 1949, and went on to Stanford University, graduating with honors in 1953. That same year she married the love of her life, Bill Benjamin Brayfield, a Stanford alum and Korean War officer. After his service in the U.S. and abroad, they attended Columbia University, and Clo earned an MSW. Besides a long career as a clinical and school social worker in New York City and Connecticut, she volunteered countless hours to local and national education, community, civil rights, and political causes, including the desegregation of the Hartford region public schools. In addition, while raising four daughters, Clo earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of Massachusetts in 1978. As a program administrator for CREC in Hartford, Conn., she helped design and oversee regional special education programs that served infants through adults. After retiring from CREC, Clo became a Special Education Surrogate Parent, advocating tirelessly for foster children in Connecticut public schools. She also enjoyed traveling the world, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, going to the movies and new restaurants, and visiting with family and friends. In 2008, she moved to Wake Robin in Vermont, making many friends there. A lifelong lover of cats, she volunteered at the Humane Society of Chittenden County, and was named Adult Volunteer of the Year in 2010. Besides giving her time, Clo donated generously to numerous organizations that supported human and animal rights. She will be greatly missed for her passion for learning, warm friendship, keen wit and intelligence, activism, and practical advice, and even more as the matriarch of a big and busy clan. Clotean is survived by her daughters, Liesse Brayfield, Maris BrayfieldKittell, and Mary-Elizabeth Sciorra; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her cat, Amber. She was predeceased by her daughter, Beth Brayfield in 1982; and in 1996 by Bill Brayfield, her husband of 43 years. A Circle of Remembrance ceremony at Wake Robin will be held in early January to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the animal shelter or .
