CARBONDALE -- Ellis Leslie Mitchell was born Oct. 18, 1927, and died April 2, 2014, at home. Upon returning from active duty in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he married Betty Lou Hill of Benton and graduated from SIU with a degree in business. He owned and operated Universal Glass and Carpet and was proud to have his business represented on many large-scale glass jobs in Southern Illinois. Ellis was active in the community, particularly through involvement with the Lions Club. He was responsible for organizing Fourth of July fireworks displays for 43 years, and he was instrumental in preserving the town square pavilion. For his work with the club, he was given the Melvin Jones award, the club's highest honor. In 2000, Ellis and Betty were named Carbondale's Citizens of the Year. He also especially enjoyed planning and attending CCHS and USS Bunker Hill reunions. Survivors include three children, Patrick Mitchell (Kelly), Timothy Mitchell (April) and Sarah Merideth (Gary), all of Carbondale; and four grandchildren, Alexis Ruck (Adam), Dakota Mitchell, Scout Mitchell and Tristin Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2000. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, April 4, in First Presbyterian Church. L. Goebel Patton, 100, of West Frankfort passed away at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at his residence. He was born October 24, 1913 in New Haven, Il. to Roy F. Patton and Irene Rowe. He married Eileen H. Howell Lucas and Pauline Patton and they both preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Penelope K. Mr. Patton graduated from Frankfort Community High School in 1930. Received his Bachelor of Education from Southern Illinois University and his Masters of Education from the University of Illinois. He was an Educator from 1932 to1984. He taught at Logan School from 1932-1935 was Principal at Lincoln School from 1935-1941, Principal at Lincoln School from 1935-1941, Principal at Central Junior High from 1941-1943, Superintendent of WF Elementary Schools from 1943-1946. He Organized Unit School District #168 in 1958, Built Max Morris Gym in 1950, Principal and Superintendent at Frankfort Community High School from 1946-1960, Director of the Illinois Education Association from 1960-1970 and was Superintendent of Frankfort Community School District 168 from 1970-1984. Mr. Patton was a member of the Second Baptist Church in West Frankfort since 1925. He organized and established weekly Men’s Prayer Group in 1990-He personally sent over 30 cards of encouragement weekly. He was Sunday School Superintendent for 20 years and a Sunday School Teacher for over 50 years. He was a member of the West Frankfort Lions Club since 1942 the West Frankfort Masonic Lodge since 1940. He organized and served on Board of Directors of the WFRX Radio Station, First Community Bank of WF, American Savings and Loan and Southern Illinois Schools Credit Union. Mr. Patton was a board member of many organizations including the Salvation Army for 70 years, Franklin-Williamson Human Services 33 years, President Egyptian Council Board of Boy Scouts of America and established Southern Illinois Boy Scout Camp 1947-48. Also a board member of the John A. Logan College Foundation 1993-2002 and SIU Foundation 1951-1982,Real Estate Acquisition Committee 1954-1961,Public Relations Committee 1961-1963,Egyptian Area Agency on Aging 2006-2014 and Mid-Continent University 2008-2012. He was active in the American Cancer Society 1950-1968 he organized the Franklin County Chapter 1951and served as Regional Director-4 years, State Director-4 years and National Director-4 years. He Chaired the Aquatics and Activity Center Fund Raising Committee 1998-2001and raised $600,000 for the aquatics center. SESSER, III. (AP) - A 17 year old boy - the object of a search Friday night and early today - was found dead in woods near his farm home four miles north of here. The youth, Fred Downen, was shot once through the heart with a .22 caliber rifle. Franklin County Coroner Barney Browning said it was apparently a suicide. A stick was stuck in the trigger of the rifle. About 150 persons - friends neighbors and law enforcement officials - searched Friday night and this morning before finding the body. The boy went hunting Friday about 3 p. m. the boy was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Downen. The Downen family resides at Emerson City, south of Waltonville, on RFD Scheller and near Sesser. Jefferson county authorities said the youth went hunting alone, with his .22 rifle. His body was found in a thicket about a half block from home. When members of the family returned home from a basketball game at Waltonville, he had not returned from the hunting trip. Becoming worried, they organized a searching party with neighbors, and late last night notified county officers and state police the body (sic) was missing. The body was taken to the Brayfield Funeral Home in Sesser. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. Freddie was born September 1, 1940 near Sesser, the son of Charles and Leida Downen. Besides the parents he is survived by three brothers, Jimmy, Ernest and Stephen, all at home; two sisters, Patsy and Susie both at home; and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Downen and Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Bates, all of Sesser. After an inquest conducted by Coroner Ray Heflry, the jury ruled that the youth died from a gunshot wound inflicted in an undetermined manner. The Downen youth had been hunting Friday afternoon near his home, four miles north of Sesser, with a .22 rifle. His body was found in a woods near his home the next morning. BENTON -- William "Buck" Andrew Morris, 92, of Glen Carbon, formerly of Benton, died at 4:43 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, in Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon. He was born June 30, 1921, in Equality, to the late Charles Benjamin and Rhoda (Williams) Morris. On Dec. 28, 1948, he and Emma Ernestine "Ernie" Kimmel were married in Harrisburg. She survives in Glen Carbon. Buck was a proud World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Upon his return from the war, he taught agriculture to other returning GIs. He retired from the Franklin County Soil Conservation District in 1987 after 32 years of service. He was an active member of his community, serving on the Benton Booster Club and participated in the Soil Conservation Service Retirees group. He was an avid sports fan. He was also a life member of the VFW and SIU Alumni Association. During his career, he was instrumental in the building of Rend Lake and tree selection. Buck and his wife took a trip sponsored by Rend Lake College to Washington D.C. where he was able to honor fellow veterans by laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by, two daughters and a son-in-law, Debra and Bill Fleming of Appleton, Wis. and Rhoda Gail Morris of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Ashlee (Brian) Hawley, Billy and Levi Fleming; and two great-grandchildren, Camdon Fleming and Carter Hawley. He was preceded in death by his parents; and five sisters. The family will have a celebration of life service at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, in First Baptist Church in Benton, with the Rev.
