    2. Brenda Kay Ing, 53, of West City, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at her home. Miss Ing's wishes were to be cremated with no visitation or funeral service. Arrangements are through the Leffler - Poulson Funeral Home of Benton. Brenda Kay Ing was born on October 9, 1960 in Franklin County, IL, the daughter of Clinton and Doris (Peradotta) Ing Brenda was a homemaker and caregiver. She is survived by a special niece Gina and husband Chris Melvin of West Frankfort, her dog Lil Bit, her roommate Debbie Kirk-Lilaja of West City, her father Clinton Ing of Marion, three brothers Keith Ing, Dennis Ing and Weldon Ing all of Benton, and several nieces and nephews. Miss Ing was preceded in death by her mother Doris Angelina (Peradotta) Ing on Feb. 6, 2012. Memorial contributions may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.     2. BENTON -- Arthur Eugene Akins, 83, passed away April 8, 2014. He was born in Benton to Arthur A. and Lula (Jones) Akins. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia (Johnson), whom he loved and appreciated dearly. They met while Arthur was stationed in Patricia's hometown, Peoria, and married on her parents' farm in 1957. He is also survived by his sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Hammond and Shirley Jones, both of Benton; as well as his loving daughters Deborah Gibson, Charlene Sarver, Angela Brewer, and Joy Akins. He will also be missed by his sons-in-law, Mike Gibson, Ed Sarver, Dan Brewer and Steve Buttitta. He was a proud grandpa to his surviving eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. As a boy he loved swimming, fishing, drawing, and shooting pool. Following Benton High School, Arthur joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17 after drinking many strawberry milk shakes to meet the minimum weight requirement. He was a veteran of the Korean War and retired after 23 years of honorable service. At the age of 46, he earned his bachelor of science in biomedical electronics from SIU Carbondale. Gardiner, 71, of Sesser, died at Redwood Manor Nursing Home in Sesser. Tuesday. He was a retired foreman with the Osno Manufacturing Co. Mr. Gardiner was born in Canada on March 15, 1905, the son of Robert and Margaret (Hozlelt) Gardiner. He was married to Dorothy Kirk, who survives. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Ina Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dale Denham officiating. Burial was in Kirk cemetery. Mr. Gardiner is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and several nieces and nephews.

    2. CHRISTOPHER -- Rex Vernon English, 86, passed away at 2:15 a.m. April 8, 2014, at his home. Rex was born April 27, 1927, in Kennett, Mo., to Joe and Azalea (Rollins) English. He married Betty Lou Adams on May 11, 1947, in Anna. Together they shared more than 59 years of marriage. She preceded him in death Aug. 11, 2006. Rex graduated from Anna-Jonesboro High School in 1945. After graduating, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in World War II. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Anna and worked at Jo-Ann Laundry. He then started employment with Bunny Bread in Anna and was transferred to Christopher in 1958 as terminal supervisor. Later, a new terminal was built in Herrin and, in 1985, he retired as Northern District Manager, after 30 years employment. For most of his career, Rex's terminal had the best sales results of all and he was called upon to help open new locations for Bunny Bread as well. Rex was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion in Christopher. Rex enjoyed fishing at Reelfoot Lake with Betty, fun times with family at their cabin near De Soto, playing pinochle with friends and family, dancing, golfing with his brothers and spending time with classmates from the class of 1945. Most of all, he enjoyed living at Lake of Egypt, dubbed by family members as "Lake of English," for 21 years. The times there, with Betty and his kids, grandchildren and all of their friends were priceless. Fishing, pontoon boat rides, water skiing (which he did until he was 60 years old), watching the grandkids play on the dock – all of these provided him with such pleasure. But what the grandkids loved best were the spectacular 4th of July fireworks Grandpa provided each year. Rex is survived by five children and their spouses, Sandy and Tom Vaughn, Candy and David Price, Rex and Sheila English, Kent (Smitty) and Cathy English, all of Christopher, and Carilea and Larry Cooper of Benton, Ky.; 11 grandchildren, Ryan Vaughn and wife, Jenny, Melissa Gibbs, Chad Price and wife, Kelli, Shauna Burckhardt and husband, Brian, Seth English and wife, Mehgan, Stella Triplett and husband, Gary, Katie Pettit and husband, Andy, Matthew English and wife, Lindsay, Ashley Kuhn and husband, Jay, Brandis Wheeler and Neill Wheeler and wife, Niki; great-grandchildren, Zoey Vaughn, Liam Gibbs, Shae, Lexi and Piper Price, Azalee and Brock Burckhardt, Jorja English, Abbott Triplett, Spencer and Finnigan Pettit, Eloise English, Lemmy Kuhn and Colton Wheeler; a sister-in-law, Norma Fuller; four nieces and 11 nephews. Two more great-grandchildren will arrive later this year.
