All help/search tips will be most appreciated for this one: PROBLEM: I believe Seymour Hanks fought and died in the Civil War using either his middle name, or a fictitious first name. Here is what I have, and what I have done, does anyone have any ideas on where to go next? WHAT I HAVE: 1)Seymour HANKS was born in Vermont (according to census info given my daughter in 1910) 2) Married Lydia Farmer also born in Vermont (according to census info given by daughter in 1910, and Lydia Farmer listed as mother on daughter's death cert. 3) Seymour fought in the Civil War from Illinois and died in Andersonville Prison Camp (Andersonville Prison Camp sent me back a photocopy of a photograph that I have of him, and said it was Seymour Hanks, Milo's father, which is true, he was Milo's father.) However, there is no Seymour Hanks listed as fighting from Illinois, yet the Andersonville records have him fighting from Illinois, but no regiment number or anything. I sent to the National Archives for pension records on Seymour, there are non. 4) Lydia HANKS remarried after Seymour's death, I don't know to who. I have checked the Illinois marriage index on line, no Lydia Hanks is listed in that. 5) I have never been able to find a Seymour Hanks in any census index or any record anywhere other than Andersonville Prison Camp. I know part of his name must have been Seymour as he named his son Milo Seymour Hanks. 6) Children of Seymour and Lydia FARMER HANKS 1) Antha L. HANKS b. 7-2-1849 VT (no birth certificate available from VT) died 4-15-1920 in Los Angeles. No obituary available, death certificate doesn't reveal any new information. Married Josiah A. MORSE (b. 6-15-1850 in MI) 10-17-1874 in Paxton, IL. Antha listed her residence as Chicago on the marriage license, and Josiah listed his as Kerr. Marriage license provides no new info. Josiah died 8-26-1927 in LA. No obituary available. I have ordered his probate records. 2) Rose HANKS LEWIS b. 1858 unknown where, died 1932 in SD Married WALKER LEWIS 1877 in Paxton, IL. Marriage license provides no new info. She died 1932 here in SD. Death certificate, obituary provides no new info. 3) Milo HANKS b. 10-1-1859 Packwaukee, WI. Married Sarah Gullickson (name changed to Ness) in St. Paul, MN died 3-20-1946 Miles City, Montana. Death certificate, obituary reveals no new info. 4) Josephine HANKS unknown birth date. Married Alfred James BOURNE (BOUREN 11-6-1874 in Cook County, Illinois. I currently have someone in Illinois looking for her death date. MOST POSSIBLE LEAD: There was a Jason HANKS in Vermont who married Rachel Burr, daughter of SEYMOUR BURR. Their ages would be right to have had "my Seymour". Jason Hanks had a sister named Antha, "my" Seymour named his daughter Antha. This Jason Hanks was listed in the 1860 Marquette, WI census where Seymour had a child the year before. I have the death dates for Jason and Rachel, but there were no obituaries that could be found. I have sent to Vermont to see if there are any probate records for Jason. There is also an extensive file on Jason Hanks at the LDS site, so I sent a letter to the person who submitted the file on the family, hoping they have more information. Jason had other brothers, and the same person submitted the file on all of them, so if "my Seymour" is a son of one of them, hopefully this person would have that information. Where do I go from here? What have I overlooked? I have queries on all of the Hanks boards, Burr boards, Farmer boards, belong to 2 Hanks mailing lists, a Farmer mailing lists, in addition to the state and county lists. I know I'm missing something here to search, but what is it? All help appreciate, and I am always willing to help those who are searching in South Dakota. Thanks for any and all help, Ronette from SD
