    3. I am searching for information on the wife and any children of Samuel C. Batcheler, a Civil War veteran b. 1845, d. April 7, 1872 who is buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Momence, IL. The (Wilmington) Peoples Advocate reported on April 20, 1872, that "Samuel C. Batcheler, eldest son of D.L. Batcheler, Esq., formerly of this City, died recently, at his home in Momence, of small pox. Several members of the family were stricken down by the disease, which was communicated from a boarder who stopped at their house. "Sammy" served his country in Co. E, 39th Regiment, during the last two years of the rebellion, and had many friends in this section, who will learn of his untimely death with regret." The Kankakee Gazette reported on April 11, 1872 that "Samuel Bachelder, of Momence, son of the proprietor of the hotel at that place, and quite well known here, died last Sunday, and report says of the small pox." No wife or child appears to be buried with Samuel in the Momence cemetery, and I do not know whether he was married or had any children. If he did, possibly she and/or they survived the small pox, and she may have remarried. My great-great-grandfather Marcus D. Lafayette Batcheler, was born in Pennsylvania in 1824, the year of the Marquis d'Lafayette's triumphal return visit to the U.S. D. Lafayette Batcheler and wife Elizabeth Dykens moved to Wilmington, IL in 1848. He died 1904 in Chicago and is buried with wife Elizabeth (d. 1884) in Mound Grove Garden of Memories, Kankakee. Also, does anyone have or know where I can find more information concerning (1) an outbreak of small pox in Momence in March or April 1872, or (2) hotels in Momence in 1872?
