Hi! I'm new to the mailing list. Does anyone know if there is an index to the 1900 Kankakee County census? Thanks, Susan
I received a note from a list person who gave me some info ref the marriage of Arthur Wheeler along with a slip number. I wonder how I could go about getting the details of the marriage and perhaps some additional info on Arthur and his bride. jack Mayhew, jmayhew050@aol.com
Just a quick note to thank everyone that has emailed me regarding the above surname. While no one was researching the same name, they still took the time to write and tell me where to find the info I needed. When I posted the messege two days ago, l did not expect soo many generous people to come foreward with so much wonderful information and suggestions. Thanks again to all of you! Michele Barry Tucson, Ariz.
Hi fellow researchers in Kankakee Valley I just spent a very nice weekend in Grant Park and Kankakee. I visited the libraries in Grant Park, Bourbonais amd Kankakee. I visited the graves of my gg grandfather, gg grandmother and gg uncle and his wifes at Heusing Cementry I also visted the graves of my gg aunt and gg uncle at the Zion Lutheran Cemetry. But what I was surprised at was the lack of info about the Sumner Township area. I thought I would be able to find newspapers accounts of the area. The Grant Park Libary had nothing. Kankakee Libaary has the Kankakee City paper back to 1850's but it has very little reporting of Sumner Township. Here is where I seek your help is there a place that has info about Sumner Township and Grant Park from the time period 1867 to 1945 Thanks for your Help Dick Zimmerman Owosso, MI zimerman@shianet.org
Have you checked with the Iroquois Co. Genealogy Library? Ducat sounds familiar, but then alot of my family lived in Ashkum (BURNS, MEAR) My great grandmother BURNS was born a CHARRON from Quebec and some on the MEAR side came from Quebec also. I read the email following yours RE: St. Anne, and I will also chime in that you may want to join that St. Anne group. I'm not a member, but someone who is a member and is researching my MEAR family found me and had also mentioned the group. You never know what or WHOM you wil find! We are sort of a sub-set of the ILFORD list, with its one-third focus on Kankakee County. St. Anne, as you may know, was settled as a town (there had been some farms there) around 1850 by a group of French from Quebec. They were led by a Fr. Charles P. T. CHINIQUY, who had been asked by the Bishop of Chicago to establish the French in central Illinois (i.e., to get Roman Catholics living in the area before the English and others moved in). St. Anne was for a time entirely French-speaking and culturally French as well. Other French-speakers from Belgium, Switzerland, and elsewhere also came to settle in this town and towns nearby. I am guessing that your DUCAT family was one of those. This is a longer story than I can get into here, but what I am leading up to is this: you and anyone else with an interest in the French-speaking families of this area is MOST WELCOME to join our St. Anne interest group (E-mail right now, but maybe someday a real Rootsweb list). Just let me know and we'll sign you up. There are about 35 of us now, including some VERY accomplished researchers, and we have some great discussions and some definite successes, as well. Cheers to all! Ginny Crawford VCrawf@aol.com Carmel Valley CA USA

I sent Lee (Kankakee Co.) a message asking if she knew anything about it, too. The first day, I figured it was the infamous MCI glitch. But it's been down since the weekend, so I have to wonder if they've moved it or some such thing. If anyone knows, I also would appreciate knowing what's going on. I hope they haven't made good on their thoughts to make it available only to subscribers -- which is a ludicrous thought if you think about it.
