Illinois Easterm Hospital and the Kankakee State Hospital are one and the same. It was used as a facility for housing the mentally challenged in the early part of this century. It later turned into Shapiro Developmental Center and still stands on the outskirts of KKK on route 45. To the best of my knowledge the records are NOT available. I'm not sure if they are "lost" or if it's a govermental thing. The Iroquois Co. Genealogy Society has a few death records from both IL Eastern and KKK Hospital. Cheryl Wixon Gocken President - ICGS
this will be a really obscure reply someone else could probably do better with, but I know in my census researches of the late 1800's, part of the census is for a Kankakee hospital. They were enumerated on their own pages in the census and I'm sure a family history center will be able to get you closer. I don't live anywhere near there, don't know if they are still in operation though I would be surprised if they were. Anyway, try the census, then try the Kankakee Valley Genealogical Society at http://www.keynet.net/~lee/k3gensoc.html ... Hope this is of any help at all. > -----Original Message----- > From: DELietz@aol.com [SMTP:DELietz@aol.com] > Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 1999 11:47 AM > To: ILFORD-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [ILFORD-L] Illinois Eastern Hospital > > In a message dated 10/6/99 12:48:36 PM Central Daylight Time, > davepro88@yahoo.com writes: > > << I am looking to get records from the Illinois Eastern > Hospital for my GGG Grandmother who was admitted in > the 1890's. I am looking to get records from the Illinois Eastern Hospital for my GGG Grandmother who was admitted in the 1890's. The commitment papers indicate this hospital is located in Kankakee. She lived in Gilman, IL. Does anyone know if this hospital still exists? Also, the address and where I might write to get copies of her file? Since you mention "commitment papers" is it safe to assume that it was a mental facility? If so, it may have been closed some time ago in keeping with modern practices. Dennis

WATTS <gordon_watts@bc.sympatico.ca> Sent: Tuesday, August 17, 1999 10:48 AM Hi Karen. Thank you for responding to my question and offering to forward my message to your list. I have had a few before you make the same offer for which I am grateful. The text of what I wanted to send is below. Petitions from people outside of Canada can be used by Senator Lorna Milne as support for her private Bill to be presented in October. Thank you again for your interest and your support. Gordon. - -------------------------------------- Greetings Listers Have you ever used information in Canada's Census records to find that great-great-grandfather James XXX was married to Mary, and that they had four daughters and five sons, most of whom you were previously unaware of? Have you been able to find that g-g-grandfather James was born DD-MM-YY and that Mary was born DD-MM-YY? Did you find their countries of origin? Did you find the ages and birthdates of their children? Did you find the location of their homestead and that in 1901 they owned one horse, two cows, and three sheep? Would you like to continue using Canada's Census records to find information like this? Did you know that the last Census of Canada that was released to the Public was for 1901? Are you aware that under current legislation in Canada THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CENSUS RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC? Did you know that privacy/confidentiality clauses in Canada's Statistics Acts since 1906 over-ride clauses in the Privacy Act that allowed Census records containing personal/identifiable information to be released to the National Archives, and subsequently to the Public 92 years after collection? A Canada-wide committee of genealogists and historians, of which I am a part, are dedicated to obtaining release to the Public after a reasonable period of time, of Canada's Post 1901 Census records . We have been working on the internet encouraging interested genealogists and historians to write Members of Parliament, the Hon. John Manley - Minister for Industry and Minister responsible for Statistics Canada, and the Hon. Sheila Copps - Minister for Canada Heritage. The purpose of writing is to express our dismay with the current legislation and to urge them to take steps to remedy the situation. A formal Petition to the House of Commons of Canada has been drawn up and is being circulated Canada-wide. This petition, for citizens/residents of Canada to sign, urges the Government of Canada to take whatever steps necessary to retroactively amend Privacy/confidentiality clauses of Statistics Acts since 1906 to allow Release to the Public of Post 1901 Census records after a reasonable period, starting with the 1906 Census. This petition is downloadable from the Post 1901 Census Project page at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census Available from the same website is a French Language petition, identical in content to the English version. These petitions will be presented to the House of Commons in October 1999. After many requests from people living outside of Canada, a petition to be signed by citizens/residents of countries other than Canada, but having roots in Canada, is also downloadable. This petition has been worded to compliment the petition to the House of Commons and will be used as support in the Senate by Senator Lorna Milne. Also available at this site is a more detailed explanation of the problem, sample letters to write to Members of Parliament and the appropriate Ministers, excerpts from Hansard that detail efforts by Senator Lorna Milne in the Senate of Canada, to bring attention to this problem, and links to other websites that have information regarding the problem and our campaign. There is a Scoreboard that lists all 301 Members of Parliament, their e-mail addresses, and shows how they would vote on a Bill to Release to the Public Post 1901 Census records. Click on your MP's name to bring up a correspondence log for him/her. Finally at this site are links to articles I have written on the Post 1901 Census campaign for the Global Gazette and for The Family Tree, as well as a link to a speech given by Senator Lorna Milne to the Ontario Genealogy Society convention. I have set up a mailing list to be used as a forum for genealogists and historians interested in Post 1901 Census issues. Everyone having an interest in Canada's Census information is more than welcome to join the list and participate in the discussion. To join this mailing list send an e-mail to CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L-request@rootsweb.com with ONLY the word SUBSCRIBE in the Subject line and the body of the message. Please do not have any other text, or signature files, in the body of the message, or the server will reject your e-mail. Please feel free to forward this e-mail to other lists to which you belong. I am searching for information on the wife and any children of Samuel C. Batcheler, a Civil War veteran b. 1845, d. April 7, 1872 who is buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Momence, IL. The (Wilmington) Peoples Advocate reported on April 20, 1872, that "Samuel C. Batcheler, eldest son of D.L. Batcheler, Esq., formerly of this City, died recently, at his home in Momence, of small pox. Several members of the family were stricken down by the disease, which was communicated from a boarder who stopped at their house. "Sammy" served his country in Co. E, 39th Regiment, during the last two years of the rebellion, and had many friends in this section, who will learn of his untimely death with regret." The Kankakee Gazette reported on April 11, 1872 that "Samuel Bachelder, of Momence, son of the proprietor of the hotel at that place, and quite well known here, died last Sunday, and report says of the small pox." No wife or child appears to be buried with Samuel in the Momence cemetery, and I do not know whether he was married or had any children. If he did, possibly she and/or they survived the small pox, and she may have remarried. My great-great-grandfather Marcus D. Lafayette Batcheler, was born in Pennsylvania in 1824, the year of the Marquis d'Lafayette's triumphal return visit to the U.S. D. Lafayette Batcheler and wife Elizabeth Dykens moved to Wilmington, IL in 1848. He died 1904 in Chicago and is buried with wife Elizabeth (d. 1884) in Mound Grove Garden of Memories, Kankakee. Also, does anyone have or know where I can find more information concerning (1) an outbreak of small pox in Momence in March or April 1872, or (2) hotels in Momence in 1872? I am hoping that someone may have knowledge of the Smiley family, some members of whose are buried in the Onarga Cemetery. Are there any members of this family still in the area of Iroquois County?? Some members of my family (Thrasher/Whiteside) are interested in a cemetery plot in the Onarga Cemetery which is owned by this family. It appears that the last person buried in the area by that name was in the late 1920's so I realize that they may no longer be in the Onarga vicinity. Thanks in advance, Nancy Torphy
I'm researching the names Doss and Maskrod in this area of Illinois. John Maskrod with his children Julius (grandson raised as his son), Mary, Louis and Adeline. They were in Illinois after 1860 and moved on to Kansas about 1876. I am searching for other family members who may have immigrated with them from Italy, France or Switzerland (?). Fredric Doss, who emigrated in 1855 from Germany at the age of 25. He married Mary Maskrod. Although I have know that Mary moved to Kansas with her parents, I am having trouble deciding if Fred went with them. 1900 census in Illinois shows Fred living in Essex Township, Essex Village, Kankakee County, but divorced. I have been unable to find out when or where he died. Although an unusual name such as Maskrod (also spelled Maskrid and Maskaroid) is easy to separate the chaff from the grain, there's not a lot of grain. <smile> Charlotte
Debbie is right, this list is way too quiet. My contribution isn't great. I still have many photos, documents and letters from my maternal ggg grandfather, George C Wilson b: 22 AUG 1817 (Allegheny Co, PA) d: 1 NOV 1902 (Gibson City, Ford Co., IL) m: 24 AUG 1841 Margaret Jane Taggart. Some day I hope to get to snoop about the area where his farm once was; many of his letters describes the area fairly well. In his early days he was a Presbyterian minister, converted to Baptist, ended up farming and raising a dozen children. Is anybody on the ILFORD List doing anything with this family line? George in North Carolina
Man, this is a quiet list! I have 2 old photos of a Mr. and Mrs. Migilvery (spelling) from Ashkum. Anybody here related to them? They were probably taken 1900 - 1920. Debbie

I have a lot of information on the Roll family line, but not much on grandfather's immediate family or parents. I really appreciate all the replies have had from the ILFORD-L list. I really don't know exactly where the family lived in Iroquois County, or for how long. Harvey & Martha Jane Cunningham Roll had children: Mary V. Roll m. Ellett Colebank (believe Mary was born before the family came to Illinois) Believe all the other children were born in Illinios, but have no proof. John William Roll m. Martha Colebank (called Uncle Will) Charles Roll (have no further information on him) George Washington Roll (my grandfather) Harvey Lincoln Roll m. Flora ?? (called Uncle Linc) I believe one of the brothers, possibly Harvey Lincoln & wife moved to Roseburg, Oregon sometime after their marriage, possibly after 1888. I remember my father mentioning visiting that family at one time. I have a lot of data on the Roll line descended from Jan Mangalese (translated to Roll), but am sadly lacking on the more resent members of the line. From Jan Mangalese, the line moved from NY, through Pennsylvania, Ohio, possibly Indiana, Illinois, into Kansas and some went farther west. Again, many thanks to all who answered my plea!
