    1. [ILFORD-L] I'm new to the list!
    2. Rachelle MIller
    3. Hello good people, I am new to this list and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Rachelle, and I live just outside of Portland, OR. My husband's ancestors emigrated to St. Anne and Bourbonnais in the late 1850's from Trois Riveres, Quebec. The names I am researching are Gadbois (changed from Vandandaigue), Lambert, and Granger. They did not follow Father Chiniquy, but remained devout Catholics. I am just beginning research on these lines, and would appreciate any pointers, helps, hints, or tips you might have for me. I'm looking forward to hearing from you! --Rachelle

    2. Kim Christensen
    3. Hello, Does any one know of a website where I could get information about priests that worked in the Shawnee Mission area of Kansas in the 1920' - today? I am helping a friend who is doing a history of her church in that area. (Sorry that this is about an area other than Ford or Iroquois counties in Illinois.) I am hoping there is a general site for all catholic priests. Thank you, Kim in Overland Park, Kansas mailto:christk@maplewoods.cc.mo.us

    2. Hi, There are so many German sites I can't begin to list them all. For starters, go to cydnislist.com and see what she has listed there. Just a little ways down her page you'll find Cyndi's List Category Index Scroll down to Germany/Deutschland, and it will take you to a page full of websites as well as other resources and tips and helps and mail lists and......... Joan JoanBohlin@aol.com >> Joan, The Parish in L'Erable was St. Johns. It's also possible that BENWAY is actually Benoit as I have a record before me that states: 7 Oct 1867, baptism at Clifton of Doree Benoit by Father Pernin, 20 Sep 1867 born to Moyse Benoit and Henriette Dion. Godparents: Pierre(peter) Dion and Flavie Benoit. When researching Iroquois and Kankakee Counties, you must expect to check the "mother" church of the area, which is Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bourbonnais, Illinois. This mission was started as early as 1838 by visiting clergy and was permanently established in 1842 as St. Leo's, then to Maternity in 1847. There were numerous Benoits in Bourbonnais as early as the 1840s. Happy Hunting.... Dave King Dave King

He probably could have served a number of smaller surrounding parishes at that time also. St. James in Irwin and St. John's in L'Erable were both served by the St. Rose priests from time to time. From my research, those priests kept busy and a few of them seem to have been in every parish at one time or another. Hope this helps. Dave King

    3. Jason, please check your morinda.com mail box. A very thorough answer to your question is in there. Paxton is located in Patton Township; the census simply given as Patton would be for the township residents outside the town limits of Paxton. Cardigans1@aol.com wrote: > Hi everyone, I'm new to the list. I'm doing my Senior paper on Paxton, > Illinois, specifically the Swedish population in that town. You might want to contact First Lutheran in Paxton and Pontoppidan Lutheran. I'm not sure if their address is Paxton, but if you are adept at using search engines -- which you should be at age 17 or 18 -- you should be able to find a mailing address and/or phone number for either church quite easily. > > > I looked at the 1900 census and found Patton enumerated with Paxton. 1. [ILFORD-L] Robert Wheeler
    2. I am trying to locate any descendent of Robert Wheeler of Pilot Township of Kankakee County. Here is what I have: The "History of Kankakee County, Illinois," page 1220, provides the following information reference Robert Wheeler: Wheeler, Robert. One of the most convincing arguments in favor of country life is found in the fact that more and more men of culture and broad outlook are seeking the seclusion and permanent peace of farms, and ignoring as less worthy the feverish activity of cities, with their nerve and individuality-annihilating tendencies, and their absence of the real compensations of existence. Prominent among this class of men who are lending dignity and worth to Pilot township is Robert Wheeler, around whose early youth centered the traditions and characteristics of picturesque Wales, out in whose veins flows the blood of English and Irish ancestors, with its possibilities of adaptation to the most exacting demands upon central western citizenship. Born in Braconshire, southern Wales, March 4.1851, Mr. Wheeler is the son of GEORGE AND MARGARET (CHRISTIE) WHEELER, the former of whom was born in England and the latter in Ireland. George Wheeler was a man of resources and ambitions, and for a number of years was a quartermaster in the English army. His marriage occurred in Ireland, and at the time of his death in 1858 he was a retired Officer of the Army. IN 1864 his wife brought her family to the United States. In the spring of 1865 they located on a farm in Pilot township, where they purchased land, and where the mother died in October 1876. Robert Wheeler is practically self-educated, having learned more from observation and subsequent study, than he did during the years of his studentship. He had a clear, well-concentrated mind, and to farming, politics, and general affairs, has brought a wealth of practical commonsense and genuine ability. In 1872 he was united in marriage to Susie Serene, who died in 1879, and in 1882 he married Harriet S. Wright, who is the mother of three children: Annie R. Robert C. and Thomas H. As a republican politician, Mr. Wheeler has perhaps reached his second most important sphere of usefulness. he is regarded as an able and conscientious local leader, having filled with universal satisfaction a number of important offices. In 1882, he was elected collector of Pilot township, which he filled three years, and since has been commissioner of highways, serving as treasure of that body since April 1893. He also has been constable and school director of the township, and has served on the grand jury. He is among the best known and most highly respected men in the community, setting an example of a practical, broad and useful life. Marriage of Robert to Susie M. Serene was 22 Jan. 1872 Vol. B. pg. 95 lic #2995 Marriage of Robert to Harriett L. Wright was 21 Feb. 1882 Vol. A Uc#1 045 More About ROBERT WHEELER and SUSIE SERENE: Marriage: January 22, 1872, Pilot Township, Kankakee County, Illinois More About ROBERT WHEELER and HARRIETT WRIGHT: Marriage: February 21, 1882, Pilot Township, Krankakee County, Illinois Children of ROBERT WHEELER and HARRIETT WRIGHT are: i. 1. [ILFORD-L] HANKS, help needed with this brick wall
    2. All help/search tips will be most appreciated for this one: PROBLEM: I believe Seymour Hanks fought and died in the Civil War using either his middle name, or a fictitious first name. Here is what I have, and what I have done, does anyone have any ideas on where to go next? WHAT I HAVE: 1)Seymour HANKS was born in Vermont (according to census info given my daughter in 1910) 2) Married Lydia Farmer also born in Vermont (according to census info given by daughter in 1910, and Lydia Farmer listed as mother on daughter's death cert. 3) Seymour fought in the Civil War from Illinois and died in Andersonville Prison Camp (Andersonville Prison Camp sent me back a photocopy of a photograph that I have of him, and said it was Seymour Hanks, Milo's father, which is true, he was Milo's father.) However, there is no Seymour Hanks listed as fighting from Illinois, yet the Andersonville records have him fighting from Illinois, but no regiment number or anything. I sent to the National Archives for pension records on Seymour, there are non. 4) Lydia HANKS remarried after Seymour's death, I don't know to who. I have checked the Illinois marriage index on line, no Lydia Hanks is listed in that. 5) I have never been able to find a Seymour Hanks in any census index or any record anywhere other than Andersonville Prison Camp. I know part of his name must have been Seymour as he named his son Milo Seymour Hanks. 6) Children of Seymour and Lydia FARMER HANKS 1) Antha L. HANKS b. 7-2-1849 VT (no birth certificate available from VT) died 4-15-1920 in Los Angeles. No obituary available, death certificate doesn't reveal any new information. Married Josiah A. MORSE (b. 6-15-1850 in MI) 10-17-1874 in Paxton, IL. Antha listed her residence as Chicago on the marriage license, and Josiah listed his as Kerr. Marriage license provides no new info. Josiah died 8-26-1927 in LA. No obituary available. I have ordered his probate records. 2) Rose HANKS LEWIS b. 1858 unknown where, died 1932 in SD Married WALKER LEWIS 1877 in Paxton, IL. Marriage license provides no new info. She died 1932 here in SD. Death certificate, obituary provides no new info. 3) Milo HANKS b. 10-1-1859 Packwaukee, WI. Married Sarah Gullickson (name changed to Ness) in St. Paul, MN died 3-20-1946 Miles City, Montana. Death certificate, obituary reveals no new info. 4) Josephine HANKS unknown birth date. Married Alfred James BOURNE (BOUREN 11-6-1874 in Cook County, Illinois. I currently have someone in Illinois looking for her death date. MOST POSSIBLE LEAD: There was a Jason HANKS in Vermont who married Rachel Burr, daughter of SEYMOUR BURR. Their ages would be right to have had "my Seymour". Jason Hanks had a sister named Antha, "my" Seymour named his daughter Antha. This Jason Hanks was listed in the 1860 Marquette, WI census where Seymour had a child the year before. I have the death dates for Jason and Rachel, but there were no obituaries that could be found. I have sent to Vermont to see if there are any probate records for Jason. There is also an extensive file on Jason Hanks at the LDS site, so I sent a letter to the person who submitted the file on the family, hoping they have more information. Jason had other brothers, and the same person submitted the file on all of them, so if "my Seymour" is a son of one of them, hopefully this person would have that information. Where do I go from here? What have I overlooked? I have queries on all of the Hanks boards, Burr boards, Farmer boards, belong to 2 Hanks mailing lists, a Farmer mailing lists, in addition to the state and county lists. I know I'm missing something here to search, but what is it? All help appreciate, and I am always willing to help those who are searching in South Dakota. Thanks for any and all help, Ronette from SD
