I wish to thank the list members who answered my inquiry about the Chaputs. I re-read the obit for Stanislas and found that he had a sister in Canada that didn't come to Kankaee with the rest of the family. This was Josephine. My grandma was named after her. I was then able to connect to the Chaput's in Canada and traced back to the 1400's! And, all of you were right about Mary Sauve being a LeClerc. I only have three of these lines left to trace: Mary Desanges Mailloux (b: 1831) and Jean Baptist LaPolice (b:1834). Both came to Illinois in the mid 1800's. Any information on these two lines would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! Lynn Clarke-Dallas, TX US iowatex1@netzero.net http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clarke

The Libertarian Party is making one last push to get Steve Dashbach's column published, in which he requests that the general public boycott Census 2000 because he (speaking for the party, mind you) considers it needlessly intrusive. The office of his press secretery, George Getz, is calling all newspapers to which they sent this column about a month ago to find out if it has been published or will be published before April 1. The column material is, first of all, flawed by Steve's mis-quoting the questions on the census to which he objects. For instance, he claims the census asks the question: Do you have trouble bathing? Nowhere does that question appear; the reference to bathing DOES appear on a checklist of possible disabilities in members of the household over age 16. The object being, of course, to determine medical needs and types of disabilities in the population over age 16. He also objects to the multiple heritage questions for which we as genealogists fought so hard. Please keep your eyes open for this column from the national president of the Libertarian Party and be prepared to repsond to it in your newspaper if it appears. Steve is of the opinion, of course, that both Forth Wayne newspapers should publish his tirade because he is from Fort Wayne. I did a Place Search for: Illinois/ Kankakee County, on the LDS on-line catalog. I did not see any mention of Kankakee County's Naturalization records! Odd. It says that Kankakee County was formed in 1853 from Iroquois and Will counties, but after that I would suppose they had their own courts. (????) Hi, I haven't had any luck figuring out how to find naturalization's for Kankakee. Are these film #'s strictly for Iroquois Cnty, or do they cover a broader area? Hello! Has any one had any experience with LDS Naturalization microfilms? If so, what info do they contain? The LDS films come in three cans 1321549, 1321550, and 1321551. Do all three films contain "intentions"? I understand that only the "Intentions" contain the bios and info on the immigrant. Is this correct? What are the 'dockets' and what are the 'records'? I remember that we went through a discussion on this topic back in 1998 and wonder if anything else has since been learned on the subject of Naturalization records in Iroquois Co. Here are the film numbers I got from the LDS on-line catalog: Film #1321549 contains: Naturalization docket C 1893-1903 B 1876-1892. (to page 50) Film #1321550 contains: B (from pg 51) A 1869-1903 Naturalization record 1 1859-1880 B 1880-1903 2 1878-1903 Film #1321551 contains : 2 (repeat filming) 3 1904-1906 4 1903-1906 2 (intentions) 1903-1906 B (intentions ) 1881-1903. I recently received an index card from the National Archives on my ancestor Henry BONNETT, who lived in Sheldon in 1880 and until his death in the early 1900s. The index card shows that Henry's Naturalization certificate record is in Vol. B., Pg. 17. His date of Naturalization was Nov. 2, 1880. Tital and location of court is given as : Cir. Ct., Iroquois Co., Ill. By the way, the archives sent me the address of Iroquois County Court at 550 South 10th there in Watseka and told me to order copies of the file from there. just a reminder about the KVGS meeting today - 1 pm- Bourbonnais public library. The program will be given by George Ingalls and it will be about Theakiki. Theakiki is the event held each summer in Bourbonnais along the Kankakee river. It is a celebration of the days of the French Voyagers. Lee Ann
Does anyone know when the photographer, I.W. Powell, was in business in Kankakee? Debbie
Hope no one minds if I repost for our Morins. Will also try St. Anne List, so please excuse me if your on both lists and get this twice. I'm planning a trip to Kankakee in the near future and would appreciate any research suggestions. (or info on Jacob Morin, or Leander Morin, since there's a good chance their related) They lived very close to each other. I've received several messages from others researchers who are stuck on these families also. According to the Kankakee, 1860 census, Jacob was 38, wife Adalade, 36, children: Carnel 9(?), Mary 5, Eliza 2, Eliza 8, (possibly not theirs) Leander Morin listed as 51 on same census. I was told Leander had a daughter, Victoria. His (possibly) 2nd wife Mathilde Brousseau. My husband's grandmother: Elizabeth Morin, b. Bourbonnais, Il., 1858, d. 1932 b. Mt. Calvary, Kankakee, Il. (m. Jos. Forgue) Her Father: Jacob Morin, mother: Adalaide Proulx married in Bourbonnais, Il. (I have marriage record) I need to find where & when in Canada, Jacob Morin and Adalaide Proulx were born, and their parents. Thank you, Holly http://community.webtv.net/Forgue/ForgueMore

AS another subscriber already put it, you need to contact the diocese for the original records from St. Mary's Immaculate Church, BUT, I know for a fact that all the death records were copied page for page by the secretary at the Catholic Cemeteries Office at Mount Calvary. f you have a death record need, call Millie at Mount Calvary and she'll be able to help you, for a lot less $$ and hassle. She will probably let you see the copies and copy pages as needed. Tell her Dave K sent you. :) Happy Hunting, Dave King
Hi folks My offer to arrange reprint has made a lot of reservations for a copy. I have not been able to find this book anywhere on Internet. So far all I know is 1)The author is Lois Meier 2)There are 198 poorly printed pages 3)An unknown number of photos likly not well printed as well. 1)If someone can trace the author, perhaps a reprint can be arranged. hopefully a copy of better printed pages could be available, rather than scan page by page. If the author agrees, I can possibly arrange quality photocopy reproduction for a lot less than printing. Can anyone contact the author or give me his address. Marcel Benoit (dit Livernois) in Quebec

Hi, I have been lurking for quite awhile now and thought I'd finally send in a few questions. Is there anyone out there who is a member, or knows a member, of the Kankakee American Legion? I have been told that my grandparents, George and Ann (Mead) Caraboa, were quite involved in the Legion and the women's auxillary. This would have probably been sometime during the 30's or 40's. I am hoping to find someone who can either give me an address to write to the Legion, or can get me any info they might have about my grandparents. Also, my father, John Caraboa, graduated from Kankakee High School in the 40's. I am hoping to find out if they might still have school records for him. Or, is there anyone out there who remembers the Caraboa family? They lived in Gardner, and still have relatives in the area. Thank you. Linda Caraboa Colwell

I am so very excited!! I have just connected with a relative of the LaBolle line in DeKalb Cty. I learn that the immigrant ancester was on a shipwreck that landed in Ireland (just like the line I am searching in Loda). So I am almost certain they are brothers! Francois in Loda, Ford Cty--Augustine in Somanauk, DeKalb Cty. Does anyone know how far away these two towns are or know of any one in Loda or Paxton--LaBolle-Kelly or Cook? Aloha--Lois
