    1. [ILFORD-L] Roman Catholic Church/German
    2. My husband & I were married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church aka St. Mary's by the parishioners. It was known as the German Church. It was located at 156 N Washington Ave in Kankakee. The building is still there. The parish was closed in 1989. The Kankakee Journal says in it's 1989 write-up, that the parish began 116 years prior to that date, which would be approximately 1873. I know that the parishioners moved over to St. Patrick's in Kankakee. I would think that the Diocesan Office of Joliet might be able to help you out. Hope this helps. Chris Van Der Karr

    1. [ILFORD-L] Eastern Illinois Hospital for the Insane
    2. Chuck Wilcox
    3. I called Shapiro and spoke with a man I'd been referred to. He was a friend of a friend of mine, as it turned out, and has worked there 29 years. Still, I didn't get much information from him. He said the campus was built in 1886 and was first known as the Eastern Illinois Hospital for the Insane. It later became known as the Kankakee State Hospital, the Kankakee Developmental Center, and finally the Samuel H. Shapiro Developmental Center. He did not know exactly when one name gave in to the next. As for the cemetery, east of KCC, he said it's still maintained by Shapiro, but only a couple times a year. He said he believed tractors would be out there within a couple weeks to mow. As for finding ancestors, he didn't know what the specific steps are. Laws protecting the mentally ill are strict and hard to cut through, even for genealogists. As a first step in identifying ancestors, he recommended writing to the administrator of Shapiro. He estimated that it would take a court order and months of waiting to get records, if they're even available. When I asked him if there's any written history on the facility for people to read, he said he wasn't aware of any. I understand there is some history on the facility at the Bourbonnais library. This may be all someone new to this area will ever know about the place! Chuck Wilcox

    1. [ILFORD-L] State Hospital Cemetery
    2. Chuck Wilcox
    3. Dave, Yes, that's the cemetery I'm curious about. I found it the other day, with directions from a woman at Shapiro. I was surprised at how large the cemetery is and how neglected. I understand that numbering tablets discontinued about 1928, and that they were thereafter given names and dates. There may be later dates, but the latest death date I found was 1964. I'm wondering if it was about then that it was no longer used. > I've heard talk of a cemetery that existed on the present grounds of the > Shapiro Developmental Center. I would be interested to learn more about this from any KVGS members (or others) who may have the information. As a member of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness I've had several requests about this and, not being a native of this area, have no ready answers. I would be grateful for any information you might have that will shed some light on this. In advance, thanks! 3. Hi All, My computer was giving me a bit of trouble for a couple of weeks and then the hard drive finally died Friday a little over a week ago. Dell sent me another hard drive (blank) and I have finally pieced back the computer enough to send this message. My last successful backup (thank goodness I have two sets I rotate) was June 30, so, if you sent me a message between June 30 and July 22, please resend the message. This applies to any info sent to both Kankakee, ILGenWeb and KVGS. If this sounds familiar, It is because this was the 2nd hard drive to die in this Dell box. Of course, even after two hard drives and a modem, Dell still will only replace the parts as they die. Lee Ann Hollenbeck lee@keynet.net

Luddinton, etc., but can at least do a lookup in the Kankakee paper for December 1861. > Am looking for any and all information anyone may have on Rebecca A. Rebecca's daughter Mary Salina Dille married a Williams. > thank you in advance for any info on obituaries or articles in newspapers or death certificates information. I would gladly contact privately anyone who would do some look ups for me Since the only information in your note involves a marriage date, I'll look it up to see what I can find. Then I'll get back to you with results. It's also possible that our government center will have vital statistics on one party or the other. Before I check that out, tell me about Rebecca's surname and why you show three surnames for her. Was she married three times with Jacob as her third? The more information you give me, the more I can find out. Chuck Wilcox Two Decades of 19th Century Diaries at http://www.genweb.net/~wilcox/ Join The Movement . . . 1. [ILFORD-L] Re: Julius BROUSSEAU in History of Los Angeles County
    2. Brenda Hébert
    3. Hiya, Sandra! Just out of curiousity, did the bio mention him living in Kankakee, Illinois before he settled in L.A.? Is there any mention in the book or in the bio about an L. H. NADEAU?? The reason I was asking is that I thought the BROUSSEAU name sounded familiar, so I looked in the file I have on my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Moses Hébert who died in 1873 and a J. BROUSSEAU pops up more than once -- and L. H. NADEAU was the administrator of the estate -- and by the time the whole estate thing was settled, both J. BROUSSEAU and H. NADEAU were in Los Angeles. :o) Included in the file was even a photocopied handwritten letter by Mr. J. BROUSSEAU of the Howard, Brousseau, Howard firm. That was dated 8 Apr 1878. oh, and the letterhead originally read "Office of: J. BROUSSEAU, Attorney at Law, Kankakee, Ill." He handwrote the names "Howard" and the words: "Los Angeles, Cal." over the original heading. :o) In 1873, Monsieur BROUSSEAU was still in Kankakee. He apparently sued the Illinois Central RR Company for causing the death of my gr-gr-gr-grandpa. He won $1,000 and kept $500 for himself (if you ask me, that's an AWFULLY steep fee) and the other $500 was doled out to my gr-gr-gr-grandma and her 5 surviving children. Anyways, thought you might find this interesting. 3. Hi, I have Kents in this area in the time-frame 1858 - 1867 (Edwin D. Kent) and again from 1880 to the 1940s (a son, William Warren Kent, moved back to the Milford area after Edwin left in 1867.) I don't have the names you mentioned, but the family I'm tracing in the 1858 - 1867 era may have had other relatives in the area. Edwin had siblings who were on the boat with him in 1850 from England and some of them are missing after that. I'd be interested in hearing about any Kents you find around here and of course happy to share data.
