Hi Sandy, I *think* my Olivers are from a different Fayette County Oliver line altogether, but one never knows <grin>. I have very little information but here is what I have: Allen OLIVER (b. IN) m. Susan GOSNELL, Coles Co IL in November 1856. I find an Emaline GOSNELL in the 1850 Coles County census index; her age is given as 14 years, born in Indiana, but she is living with a different family. I also found a George W OLIVER (born in NC) in the 1850 Coles County census with a son James A. OLIVER, age 8 or 9, born in Indiana. Most of the male ancestors in my Illinois line went by their middle names which makes them very hard to find in the census. It's possible that this is my Allen OLIVER but he would have married at the age of 14 or 15 I only have the name of one of Allen and Susan's children, my great great grandfather Martin H. OLIVER, b Mar 1861 IA; m Mary Ellen POPE, daughter of John George (Johann Georg) POPE and Elizabeth Jane REDDISH on Sept 1, 1886. Martin was living in Nokomis, Montgomery County, IL but married Mary Ellen POPE in Fayette County IL. It appears that they lived in Montgomery County for awhile before settling permanently in Fayette County. Their children were: 1. Hattie Myrtle OLIVER (9 Sep 1887 - 24 Jul 1973) m. Thomas Llewlleyn MAHON (18 Aug 1884 - 27 Aug 1964) 2. Hugh W. OLIVER (b Jan 1891) 3. Phoebe J. OLIVER (b Jun 1892) m. John STUTTWIG 4. Florence Ellen OLIVER (Feb 1895 - Sept 1978) m. Clarence SYLVESTER HELM (June 1893 - Nov 1966) -- these are my grandparents 5. Elizabeth 'Bessie' C OLIVER (b Apr 1897) married ? Howard ? Pruitt 6. Velva M OLIVER (b Apr 1897) 7. Mary A OLIVER (b May 1898) This probably only muddies the water a little bit more, I'm afraid. Dear Cheryl: I am interested in your reference to Phoebe Oliver. I have searched for Oliver family connections in Fayette County and have hit a brick wall as well. From my research I have learned that there were apparently two Oliver families in the area that were not related. Do you have any further information on Phoebe's family? I was wondering if perhaps she would have been a daughter of one of my Oliver ancestors. ?Martin ?MATHEW OLIVER and MARIA RADABRUCH are: i. IRVIN3 OLIVER, b. May 17, 1847; d. This family is one of my major brick walls. John Stuttwig married Phoebe Oliver (born June 1892 in Fayette County, parents Martin H. Oliver and Mary Ann Pope). According to my father, John worked for the railroad and they lived in East Saint Louis for a number of years, but I understand from a second cousin that John and Phoebe are buried in Fayette County IL. I Having tried every search engine I can think of, the only information I have found on this family is: Margarethe Stuttwig patented 40 acres of RR land in Fayette County 30 Mar 1882 Frieda Stuttwig (b. 17 Mar 1903, d 26 Jun 1998), daughter of Frank Stuttwig and Henrietta Denning, married to Floyd William Sumption in 1922. Her obituary mentions a sister named Georgia. Maureen Stuttwig married William E. Manion. Does anyone know anything about this family or have any suggestions how I might go about tracking down some information about them? Cheryl Helm Ohio
I have in our family a Sarah Louisa Manion that married a William Asa Leach. I don't know much about the Manion family but I can give you a name and address and you could write to her and she if she could help you out on the William E Manion that you mentioned in your e-mail. Her name is Ethel Meidinger, 7802 N. Wayne, Kansas City Mo 64118-1966. She is related to my husband's family the Leach family My name is Katie Leach.
Can I ask a favor: If anyone "Happens" to search any obituaries or newspaper articles in Fayette County, could you please take a quick look and see if you see ANYTHING on the following: I am looking for the parents, siblings or family of: Henry W. (possibly Walter) Rinkel: Born in Hanover, Germany of 27 Nov 1850, died in Fayette County (Farina) Illinois on 17 Dec 1929. Buried in the Farina Cemetary. Married to: Henrietta Kruse on 23 April 1885 (in Chicago, IL). Children: Lillie & Lydia (twins), Elmer H., Henry G., Walter M., Frieda. Parents of Henry W. Rinkel: Henry and Dorothea (Kohlberg) Rinkel Thank you.
I am researching my MCDONALD family roots. What I have at this point is that Fred McDonald and Ruth DURBIN began their family in Sefton, IL between 1905 and 1913. Their children were Lawrence, Clarence, Alice and Bonnie. Lawrence McDONALD moved to Champaign, IL and ran a gambling house there. If anyone has additional information on that I would appreciate it. I have found a record that in 1900 there was a MCDONALD family of William and Sarah with the children: Fred, Walter, Maude and Tammy. This is my gggrandfather and mother. Apparently William McDonald's father came from Ireland. This is as far as I have gotten so far. Any additional information would be helpful. I do not have death information on anyone so far and would appreciate anything. Several books have been written about the Shelton family, including - The Sheltons, by Kathryn Morris Brown, tracing the family back to about 1100 in England. The Thomas Shelton Family in Early Virginia, by Frank H. Shelton, and A History of the Shelton Family in England and America, by Mildred Campbell Whitaker are all very useful in compiling the Shelton Family data. Mildred Campbell Whitaker traces the Shelton family from Virginia to Bermuda and back to England. According to her, the Sheltons were prominent in early English affairs, back to the time of the Barrons who forced King John to sign the Magna Carta, King William, the Conqueror, and beyond to one of the early Sheltons, Ralph Shelton of Norfolk, the Crusader. The Sheltons were definitely of English descent. My GtGrandmother was Sarah Angeline Shelton, daughter of Daniel Shelton and his 2nd of 4 wives, Mary Elizabeth Haislip. Sarah Angeline Shelton married William Allen Mills in 1869 in Fayette County and during 63 years of marriage, reared a family of 12 and two additional orphans. William Allen Mills, Sarah Mills, and Daniel Shelton, her father, are all buried in Wilberton Cemetery, Wilberton Twp., Fayette County. Daniel Shelton was the son of Rutherford Shelton and Elizabeth Mulliken, who married 1817, Gallatin County, KY. Rutherford Shelton married 3 times; his second wife was Elizabeth Cheshire whom he married in 1840, Fayette County, IL. There is a small long forgotten cemetery in Wilberton Township about a mile from the old Frogtown School... it sets out along the edge of a field... the Cheshire Cemetery. It probably holds about 20-25 stones still standing. It may have already been catalogued by the FCGS and published in earlier editions of Fayette Facts. When researching William Henry Harrison Shelton in Fayette... there were two. First, W.H.H. 1820-1898, son of Rutherford and Elizabeth Mulliken. This first W.H.H. married 1. Isabel Martin in 1843 in Fayette County, married 2. E.L. Matilda Sproull in 1877, Fayette County, IL, and he also had a brother... Daniel Shelton... noted above. The second W.H.H. Shelton 1859-1940, was a son of the Daniel Shelton noted above... and his 3rd of 4 wives... Catherine Elizabeth Shupe. This second W.H.H. married in 1882, Margaret Montgomery and was a 1/2 brother to my GtGrandmother, Sarah Angeline. This second W.H.H. Shelton died in Woods County, OK. This particular line of the Shelton Family probably came from England in the late 1600's and may be connected with further research with the aforementioned books. However, this Shelton direct line was first noted in Middlesex County, VA, then south into Pittsylvania County, VA, east to Gallatin County, KY, and then into Fayette County, IL. One connection of generations in VA/KY is lacking sufficient documentation to validate that Rutherford Shelton was the son of Daniel Shelton, Jr. and his wife, Martha Keatts, however, several of us researching this line over the years have come to the conclusion that he was the son of Daniel, Jr. Daniel Shelton Jr. 1764-1816 was the son of Daniel, Sr. and his wive Lettia Young, who married 1750 in Middlesex County, VA. Daniel, Sr. 1729-1809 was the son of Ralph Shelton 1685-1733 and Mary Crispen, who married approximately 1706, Middlesex County, VA. Ralph Shelton was the son of Peter Shelton 1664-1718 and his wife Susannah Jaxon (Jackson). The book The History of Pittsylvania County, VA holds a lot of data on this Shelton Family Line in the 1800's. Obviously, many of these generations of Sheltons had large families, multiple wives, etc... and named successive sons after themselves in later generations. Sorting out my own direct line of my GtGtGrandfather Daniel Shelton and his 4 wives in Fayette County took several months of effort and research. Anyone desiring additional info on these Fayette County, IL, Sheltons, cemetery directions, or some limited digital photos in Wilberton Township, can contact me via direct e-mail and I will provide a text file of the family in IL. I don't know if he was any part of the MELTON family of Fayette County, but he probably was related. There was a LONNIE MELTON that lived about a mile south of Coffeen on the Red Ball Trail in Montgomery County. He was probably ot the 1860-1880 vintage, as best I remember him.
