I am wondering if there is a way to find an obituary on a person who died in 1862. I am looking for Matilda ANDERSON who died 17 Nov 1862 in Fayette Co., IL. Her husband was Stephen ANDERSON. Her maiden name was MOORE. I don't know who her parents were. Any help would be appreciated. Helen in Idaho

Hi Jerry. This came to me by way of the Fayette County web site. None of my lines connect. JB Jerryblay@aol.com wrote: I am searching for information about Larkin Stricklin/Strickland. I am related to the Curry side of the Gatewood connection. Elizabeth father- Adam Samuel Curry was my Great-Great-Grandfather I have Nancy (Robert's Mother) as Nancy WOOLSEY. Maybe that will help. Hello Fellow Researchers, I am sending out the information I have gathered on my Gatewood line in hopes of finding someone who will be able to help me out. This is all the info I have and I am not sure where to go beyond this. I will start with the present to the past... Hester Ann Adkins, born in Fayette, Co, IL on Jan 16, 1871 Married Charles Adkins. They had children: Bessie, Grace, Tony, Pearl, Benjamin, Frank and Elmer. Hester died on Jan 7, 1944 in Hemet, CA. Hester was the daughter of Louisa Henchy (b. abt. 1845 in MO) and William Gatewood. William Gatewood was born abt. 1839 in IL. As far as I have been able to find so far, is that they had three children: Hester, Margaret and Henry. I have yet to find William on the 1860 Census, so he may of had more children I do not know of yet. I found him on the 1850 and 1870 census. William was the son of Thomas A. Gatewood and Nancy(b.abt. 1817 in KY). Thomas was born abt. 1806 in KY. He had at least Six children: Nancy, William, John K (married Laura and had 2 daughters, Mary and Livia (sp?), Joseph, Risharel (sp?), Robert (married Elizabeth Curry), Williamson, Claybourne (married Lucy J., 2 children: John R. and Andrew), and Douglas. Nancy was found living with her son, Douglas, in 1880, both of them were widowed (Douglas was only 22 @ the time, thought that was interesting). Finally, Thomas A. was the son of Thomas R. Gatewood and Margaret (b. abt.1780 in VA). Thomas was born abt 1781 in VA. So far, Thomas is the only child I have been able to find, but I am sure there are more. If this is anyones line, PLEASE let me know! Thank you! MISTY (Researching: Blankenship, Moore, Bradley, Madison, Montgomery,Neal, Adkins, Strickland, Smith, Gatewood)
The 1870 U.S. Census shows Penelope Brown and family living in Bear Grove Twp., Fayette Cnty., Illinois. Post Office Hagarstown, Illinois. The census shows: Penelope Brown, age 53, born in North Carolina John Quincy Brown, age 22, born in Indiana Jesse Brown, age 20, born in Illinois Henry Brown, age 16, born in Illinois Henryetta Brown, age 16, born in Illinois Allen Brown, age 13, born in Illinois Christina Brown, age 10, born in Illinois Penelope Ruby married my gggrandfather Staten Brown on Feb. 6, 1845 in Rush Cnty., Indiana. She was the 2nd wife of Staten Brown. The above family was living in Hadley, Pike Cnty., Illinois in 1860 although Christina was born after the 1860 census enumeration. Penny & Staten Brown had aa child named Cassius M. Brown living with them in 1850 & 1860. Cassius was born about 1845 in Indiana. Staten Brown evidently passed away between 1860 and 1870. Staten Browns 1st wife was Dicy Coffield and this family was living in Halifax Cnty., North Carolina in 1830 with 5 male children and 1 female child in the home. One of these males was my ggrandfather William Wesley Brown, born Jan. 9, 1823 in North Carolina and I believe another male child was named Sandy Brown, born about 1825. I have no idea of the names of the other children in thee home in 1830. During the 1830's Staten Brown had at least 2 other children, names were Mary, born about 1831 and Andrew born about 1837. I have looked for any kind of information regarding Staten Browns family and could not find any trace of them after 1860 until recently. Does anyone have any information regarding this family? Did Staten Brown pass away in Fayette Cnty? I can not find a death record for him in Pike Cnty., Illinois. Does anyone have any information on the descendents of Staten Browns family? Any information will be appreciated & I will share the inf. that I have on William Wesley Brown. Thank you. Sandy B. Eglise

My aunt's first husband, Ron Black, is the son of Earney Black, Sr. & Grace Ann Cearlock. I have nothing before Earney & Grace. However, I have pictures of their gravestones on my homepage with their birth & death years. They are buried at Fairlawn in Vandalia; IL. Earney's dates are 1894-1958. Grace's are 1903-1980. If you go to http://www.advancenet.net/~conure/geneindex.htm scroll down to the cemetery section & click on Fairlawn in Vandalia, you will be taken to Photopoint where the graves are. Earney & Grace are in the 4th row, second grave. I have that Earney & Grace had 13 children. I believe that Ron Black is still in Vandalia. I will try to get in touch with my aunt to see if she remembers who his grandparents were on Grace's side. Hope this helps a little. sherry

Did your John Henry Cearlock have a second marriage to Katherine Jane Sears or Haines on 21 March 1860 in Christian County IL? If so, might Wilson and/or Grace Ann be children of this marriage. There are two IGI records for this marriage (one to Katherine Sears, one to Katherine Haines) in the LDS database at familysearch.org, but the Illinois State Archives marriage database only lists the marriage for Katherine Sears. According to the Ancestry World Family Tree at ancestry.com, Wilson Cearlock was born 1878 and married Emma Sanders (no birthdate, no marriage date given), and they had a son, Willie Cearlock, who married Gladys Hicks. In this same database, Grace Ann Cearlock married Ernie James Black -- no birthdates or marriage date are given for either one. I don't have any connections to these lines (that I know of) ... just trawling. . I have made a devestating discovery regarding borrowing Gen. books through the library. Several years ago I used to request Gen material regularly. Then I quit for a while & now I have picked up my Gen. work again & I find out from the library that because so much Gen. material has turned up missing that they can no longer request the loan of a book & expect to get it. They are being refused. This is in Central Illinois, are others experiencing this also.? What a terrible shame. Sallie K.
The middle names of some of the Kirk sons now make more sense. I sorta figured they were some kind of family name. I had Nicholas Kirk m. Elizabeth Browning 10 Dec 1808 in Barren County, KY. I got the marriage date off of the Barren County web site. 2 sons given family surnames as middle names: Robert Thompson Kirk Joseph Browning Kirk I wonder where Benjamin Hutcherson Kirk got his middle name? It is Hutcherson on land patent records. I have seen it spelled Hutchinson too. I noticed we have different birth years on him Tim. I have 1825, he was 25 years old on the 1850 census. You had 1814. Is his age wrong on the 1825 census? According to the 1850 census, James Kirk and Mary "Polly" Kirk were born in TN. All the rest of the siblings have KY as their birthplace. Do you think TN is wrong? Thanks for the input. Lynne
Lynne, My information was 2nd hand from a descendant a number of years ago. Since KIRK was not my surname line I never had time to prove it out. I hope you got some clues from it though. Your census information is probably more correct. Tim is my grandson. He helps with my computer things, so his name comes up on the e-mail address. I am the one who answers my e-mail. I was raised west of Vandalia in Shafter Twp. Unless you have me mixed up with Tim CASEY on-line. Thanks Cousin, You and I seem to have some of the same shirt-tail relative surnames cousins. The BROWNING like the KIRK surname are both related shirt-tail lines cousins to my ancestors. My paternal grandmother Morna Evalene BESS was related to most of the early surnames of the area thru her mother Sarah Elizabeth (ELMORE) BESS.
