Barb Berardi wrote... "I was recently at South Hill Cemetery in Vandalia... looking for Sec #2 Lot 3, but never did find it." Barb, if you go to the Vandalia City Hall office, located on 5th Street next to the Evans Library, they maintain both the Sexton Records for the cemetery, as well as have information to provide, assisting you in locating the sections and lots. You will also find the "catalog" of the the two cemeteries in Fayette Facts published in Vols 5 and 6 (1975 and 1976 time frame)... those back issues of the FCGS Quarterlies are also maintained in the family history section in the Evans Library. For any confusion with the names of the cemetery... both South Hill and Fairlawn are together... South Hill is the older part... Fairlawn the newer part... all located at the southern end of Vandalia... on 6th Street. A Vandalia native. edemills@aol.com

Hi all-- I'll put out my semi-annual query again, with fingers crossed for some replies: My gr grandmother, Anice "Annie" KITCHEN was b 1871, Boulder, Clinton Co, IL. She m Joseph William MORGAN (b 1862 d 1932) and they lived in the Clinton Co area of IL (Fayette Co, Marion Co, etc). She d 1945 and is bur beside Joseph in Pritchett Cemetery, Clinton Co, IL. I do not know who her parents were, other than her mother's maiden name was BONE, and according to the 1910 Clinton Co, IL federal census, Miss BONE was born in KY. In a 1880 Soundex for Bond Co, Okaw Pct., IL, I found a John KITCHENS listing, as follows: John KITCHENS white male age 55 b TN (= b 1825) Elizabeth " dau age 33 b TN (= b 1847) Owen " son age 23 b TN (= b 1857) Thomas " grandson age 17 b IL (= b 1863) Anice " granddau age 9 b IL (= b 1871) Alice " granddau age 9 b IL (= b 1871) Eva " granddau age 4 b IL (= b 1876) So, from this, it appears John "Kitchens" wife is dead?? Is dau Elizabeth really daughter-in-law of John? It would be unusual, not impossible though, for a 33 year-old woman to be single in those days. Is Elizabeth the mother of Thomas, Anice, Alice, Eva??? Are the 4 grandchildren listed siblings to each other? Where/who is their father? No husband for Elizabeth is listed. From Fayette Co, IL marriage records compiled by that county's Genealogical Society a Thomas KITCHEN age 20, farmer, resident of Pope Twp, Fayette Co, b IL child of James KITCHEN and Elizabeth KITCHEN married Martha Jane BONE, age 21, resident of Pope Twp, b GA, child of Mathew BONE and Sarah ROBERTS. They married 2 Dec 1883. If the groom was 20 on his wedding date in 1883, he would have been b in 1863, which fits with the Thomas listed above in the 1880 Soundex. Not proof, though. AND since the mother of the bride is listed by her maiden name, can we infer the mother of the groom's maiden name was KITCHEN and that she m a KITCHEN? So, possibly the 1880 Soundex showing Elizabeth as John's daughter, IS correct--maybe cousins marrying? Again, I need proof. There are other listings of BONE and KITCHEN marriages; those surnames also show up as witnesses, etc. So it appears these two families were quite close. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated. I'm more than happy to share all of my info. Resa Nichols Hennings Houston
