We rely on our computers to keep track of and print out our family histories. We use computers at our local Family History Centers and when we visit a number of other libraries. And we practically live on the Internet these days. Wouldn't it be great to have a conference devoted to these technical marvels and how genealogists are incorporating them into their day-to-day endeavor? It's such a great idea it was thought of some time ago, and GENTECH is the answer. Each year the GENTECH conference takes place in January. For a number of years this conference was always in Texas, however, two years ago the conference went on the road. It's first conference out of Texas was in 1998 when it was held in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. In 1999, they held the conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. And the 2000 conference will be held in San Diego, California. The conference is always at the end of January. In 2000, the conference will be on January 28 and 29. Like other conferences, this offers you the chance to attend lectures by professional genealogists with knowledge in the field of computer genealogy. You will also get the chance to talk to vendors from genealogy software developers to Internet entities, such as RootsWeb. Some of this year's lectures include: -- Privacy and Genealogy on the Internet -- Overcoming E-mail Overload -- Getting the Most from Online Research -- Technology Visits the Courthouse -- Successful Online Searches This year's panel of lecturers is made up of nationally known speakers, including Barbara Renick, Tony Burroughs, Jake Gehring, Cyndi Howells and others. I will also be giving two lectures at GENTECH 2000. If you are interested in signing up, you can access and print out a copy of the conference registration form by visiting the GENTECH web page (http://www.gentech.org). In order to access this page, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system. The cost of this year's conference is $85.00 for both days if mailed prior to January 1, 2000. After January 1, the cost goes up to $110.00 for the two days. There will also be two luncheons and a banquet which cost extra should you elect to attend them. You can also get a printed conference registration brochure by contacting: San Diego Genealogical Society 1050 Pioneer Way, Suite E El Cajon, California 92020-1943 Voice Mail: 619-588-0065 I hope to see you there!
