    3. PLEASE PRINT AND SAVE THIS MESSAGE SO YOU CAN REFER TO IT. Effective perhaps at the end of the week, you may see other "different" posts coming through the Effingham Mailing List. The first line will read "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." What this means is that a posting has been made to the Effingham County message board at Rootsweb.com, and forwarded to our mailing list. As I understand it, if you choose to reply, you must use the URL link in that message, or the reply will go only to our mailing list and not to the message board. That reply to the message board will in turn be forwarded to our mailing list so that we can all see the response(s). This should broaden the scope of our mailing list. Just remember that if you just hit "reply", the poster will not get your reply. There should be no reason that this cannot work to the advantage of all. If you are confused about this (and I don't blame you), post your concerns here (or email me privately if you wish) and I'll answer as best I can. Linda Mailing List Administrator. .and soon, Rootsweb Message Board Administrator for Effingham County, IL

    3. Linda, Thanks for the information about the new "gateway" addition to the Effingham list. It will be a great addition to the Effingham list! Several years ago the moderator of the LOY surname list (a distant cousin of mine) suggested we "gateway" the LOY surname board (of which I am moderator), which we did. It has helped tremendously and is a timesaver, since list members don't have to check the boards for new queries--they're automatically sent with the normal mailing lists. However, there are two things those not familiar with this procedure should be aware of: 1) Like you said, Linda, anything with a URL above the message (and stated as "gatewayed" to the list) should be replied to at the message board, not on the list. Just click on the URL given above the message and it'll take you to the actual posting where replies can be posted. Any replies given on the board will be gatewayed to the list, too, so other list members can still see the reply. 2) A old message board query (maybe even written in 1999) may have a recent reply on the message board, which will be gatewayed to the mailing list. So if list members suddenly receive a one sentence message saying something vague like "Do you have more info?" it's because the poster is replying to a previous board post that may not be in the current mailing.
