I am new to this, so hope I am doing this right. I am trying to find out something on my Holler grand parents. My grand father's name was Walter William Holler, born in Mason, IL, Effingham Co. I know nothing about my grandmother, except her name, Mary Ellen Elizabeth Marion. I am in my 70's and met only one of my grandparents when I was real young. All of my family, with the exception of my sister are gone now, so I have no one to ask. Any help on this or how to get help, I sure could use Thank you John

Here's the first thing I might suggest, John. Do you know what county your grandmother was born in, as well as the approximate year? If you're 70, assume you have to go back about 90 years to find her on any census in Illinois...or any other state for that matter. There's a good starting point....find her in a census. If it's a county close to you, spend some time looking for her in the census that you believe she may appear. Many historical societies have old censuses on microfilm...and even better it would scanned to digital form. You may get lucky and see here name and age mentioned in the household of your great-grandparents. From there, perhaps you can find her birth certificate in the same county. Of course, this assuming the family didn't move freqently. And the county didn't lose records. Anyone else have some suggestions? Surely, you do, cousin Linda....you have a lot more experience than I. heh heh.
