The KOESTER brothers: Joseph, Henry Bernard (Ricus) and Henry Three brothers are listed among the forty families who were the first members of St. Anthony parish: Joseph, Henry Bernard and Henry KOESTER. Joseph Koester and his wife Theresa Bussemeyer came to the United States from Reke-Tecklenburg, Prussia in 1835. Their first child Joseph Jr., was born in Richmond, Virigina. The family went to Cincinnati, Ohio, from whence in 1840 they came to Effingham County. Bernard Henry Koester (born 1809) and his wife, Elizabeth Schmidt (born 1808), in 1853 located eighty acres in sections 17 and 18, north of his brother Joseph's holdings. They were parents of two sons: Clemens and August. The third brother was Henry Koester, who with his wife, Margaretha Imhoff, located in Section 20, just west of Wm Althoff's land. Their children were: Henry, Clement, Frances, John, Herman and Innocens. Bernard Henry Koester (born 1809) and his wife, Elizabeth Schmidt (born 1808), in 1853 located eighty acres in sections 17 and 18, north of his brother Joseph's holdings. They were parents of two sons: Clemens and August. Clemens Koester married Elizabeth Bremer. Their children were: Henry K who married Catherine Potts (Teutopolis); Bernard married Anna Thoele; Eugene married Mary Herboth; John married Elizabeth Niebrugge; Mary married William Kenter; Clem H. ("Black" Clem, a nickname to distinguish him from "Red" Clem - derived from the color of their hair) married Clara Brummer (Island Grove); Martha, single; Veronica marred Mike Bushue; Theresa married George Grimming. Two sons died in infancy. Mrs Bushue is the only living member of the family. August Koester married Catherine Potter. Their children were: Charles, Henry, Clara, Catherine, Mina, and Rosa.
