    3. These columns were written over a 20 year period. Peggy Wood Pulliam wrote them in the Effingham Daily Newspaper. She had kept all of her written copies and the newspaper articles also. So we compiled them into a 337 page book. Some of the people that she had interviewed in 1967 are no longer alive nor are some of the places that she talks about in the county have been torn down. So to answer your question, Yes, the book is a new one, but the articles were from 1967 - 1988. BOOK REPORT Mike Brasel Name of book: BITS OF EFFINGHAM COUNTY, ILLINOIS HISTORY Author: Pulliam, Peggy Wood Subject: As the title would indicate, the history of Effingham County Why I Chose to Read: I ran into Mike "Dirt" Golden at the café in Mason. Mike knows that I am a "reader" and told me of this book. He said he had recently purchased a copy and that it is "very interesting". He promised to loan his copy to me when he finished reading it. When he did loan the book to me it took only a few minutes to realize that I needed my own copy. It is a book that anybody interested in the history of their "home" county will want to have, provided that county is Effingham County, Illinois or one neighboring it. Synopsis: The Author wrote a "local history" column for the Effingham Daily News in the years 1967-1988. In addition to being an author she is a historian and this endeavor satisfied both loves. Members of the Effingham Historical Collectors' Association convinced the author to reprint many of her columns in book form and this book is the result. It is copyrighted in 2004 by the Historical Collectors' Association Effingham, Illinois. If you are a native or long time resident of any of Effingham County's communities, either existing or one of the many that has slipped away into history, you will find many articles of interest in this book. You may well find items pertaining to your own family's history. You will certainly find such information about the families of your friends, acquaintances, co-workers or church or lodge associates. Remember; since you live in the same community their history is your history. This book will become a valuable asset to my home library. I expect I will refer to it many times in the coming years to answer question that invariably come up at social functions or family gatherings. My deepest appreciation goes out to Mike Golden, Historical Collector's Association and of course Peggy Wood Pulliam. As those of you who commonly receive my BOOK REPORTS know I do not normally make, or attempt to make, sales commercials or recommendations when I write them. I simply give my opinion about something that I have read. I am going to make an exception here and tell you that if this book interests you need to act quickly. Supplies are limited and neither the author nor publishers are planning a second printing. All copies are autographed by the author. They are available only through the Historical Collectors'Association and you need to contact Mrs. Kate Keller Bourland at 217-342-3709. All proceeds go to the Historical Collectors' Association.
