You can also subscribe to the Godfrey Library. It's $35.00 per year and you have access to all the census information, too. It took me about 5 minutes to get access to Godfrey. And....they have a mailing list for help, too. Ancestry is too pricey for me, although they have great things available. Don't forget to check out what databases are available on your local library's website. For example, my Palm Springs library has free at-home access to HeritageQuest subscription for those having library cards. This includes census, county histories, and Revolutionary War file images. Other libraries have free access to Ancestry instead of or in addition to this, using the library card number as access code. Many libraries also have Newsbank access for free, which includes a newspaper obituary archive. For libraries that don't offer these features for home use, they might offer free access at the library's own computers. I checked Effingham's Helen Matthes Library's website, and they don't offer these free databases. However, I did notice Phoenix has Ancestry free for use at their library as well as Newsbank's database. For anyone with a Springfield, IL library card, Ancestry and Newsbank can be accessed at the Lincoln Library website at home or at the library http://www.lincolnlibrary.info/Reference_Links.htm Most big cities should have this free access in one form or another. If you don't know your library's website URL, an internet search can bring up the URL (most libraries are online nowdays!). Who knows, your library card might just be worth some $$ in Ancestry/Heritage Quest subscription savings.
