How far back does the Effingham Democrat go? Did it report the 'county' news? Has it all been microfilmed? My first thought is 'Wow, what a resource!' We go back 100 to 150 yrs, Wainscott-Hyde and Mowery-Rice and Rice-Hyde, in Edgewood and Effingham (Effingham Co), Kinmundy (Marion Co), and Paxton (Ford Co). Some people were snagged by the US Censuses, others come and go, either leaving a short trace or by being buried in Edgewood or Paxton. It's NEVER dull! -- SueMcC55@comcast.net

Hi Tony, According to the 1870 census of Effingham Co. Reuben and his wife Mary H. were the parents of William 21 Peter 20 Albert 15 Elizabeth 13 Celia 10 Mossie 7 Barney 6/12 Reuben was a brewer of sugar, William was a brewery worker and Peter was a farmer. Reuben was born in PA all the rest were born in OH except Barney who was born in IL. Reuben was 50. Mary 40. Someplace I remember seeing Mary's maiden name as Hook. But don't know that for sure. Does anyone know if he was a furniture maker? I have a piece of furniture with a paper stuck on the back that says: Geo Hilleman Altamont, Ill to: B. Peterson's Pecatonica, Ill (I know were this is in Winnebago Co., a several miles from the WI state line). The 1878 Effingham County history on page99 lists him as a merchant in Altamont. on the corner of Main and Grove streets, carrying a large stock of general merchandise. His father was born in Hanover, Germany, finished his theological studies at New Bergholz, HY and came in 1868 to preach for St. Paul's Church. He later went to Sheboygan to preach. Faye, I found the following in the Effingham Democrat, a weekly paper in 1890. Feb. 28, 1890---Peter Kuhns, son of Reuben Kuhns of this township, died Sunday of congestion of the brain. I searched the next week's paper for a more detailed obit and found this. March 7, 1890---Reuben Kuhns, a resident of this township, is lying dangerously ill with lung fever. March 14, 1890---Reuben Kuhns, aged 73 years, a well known farmer of this township died Sunday night of kidney and bladder troubles, after a short illness. The deceased formerly lived in Ohio and was once a wealthy wholesale grocery merchant of Somerset in that state. He suffered a reverse of fortune and came to this county, settling here in 1868. The remains were buried in the Cathollic cemetery Monday. The deceased left only a small landed estate. His son Peter died about two weeks ago of lung fever. Hi Faye, Peter Kuhns b. 1852 in Perry Co. Ohio died in Effingham Co. Douglas Twp. on Feb. 23, 1890. He is buried in St. Anthony Cemetery, Effingham. Section 4 row 2. It says "Age 35". He is listed in the 1870 Effingham Co. Census with his parents and siblings. On 8-19-1879 he was married to Mary Perkins of Mason Twp. 24, b. in Greencastle, IN the dau of Baily Perkins and Prisilla Redding. In 1880 Peter and Mary are listed in the census living in Douglas Twp. with their dau Kate. On 6-21-1887 Peter married May Weber dau of John Weber and Catherine Ernst, of Edgewood, age 20, b. in Georgetown, OH,his second marriage, her first. I am assuming that Mary had died. I did not find a burial for her. After Peter's death May married Mathias Johns on 3-3-1896. It was the second marriage for both. I will see if I can find an obit for you.
