    1. Re: [ILEFFING-L] Grandparents
    2. Matt Thank you for your help. I ask for help on this Effingham link, and I got several responses the same day, more the next. All of you have been so very nice. I only hope someday I may be able to help someone like myself. I may have cause to ask more info in the future, if you don't mind. I'm in my 70's and am getting a late start not only on trying to put together a family tree, but also how to use a PC. Late bloomer I guess. Thanks again. John

    1. Re: [ILEFFING-L] Grandparents
    2. Oh yes, John....my mistake, you said Mary Ellen Marion was your grandmother. Linda's closer than me on the time frame estimate....your grandmother surely would have been born in the 1880's or 1890's at the latest....going back about 110-120 years. I was thinking of someone about the age of your mother when I mentioned 90 years. My apologies. 1. Re: [ILEFFING-L] Grandparents
    2. You're welcome, Linda...you're so experienced at these types of searches. Have you ever found information like d.o.b., date of marriage, etc....and your starting point only knowing a relative's approximate age and place of residence? So, do you have Effingham County censuses in digital form or did you make copies on a trip to Illinois? The marriage certificate search did occur to me afterwards also. Talk to ya soon, Matt On Sun, 30 Jan 2005 00:19:42 -0700 "Linda Lambert" <ktlkate@extremezone.com> wrote: > I don't have a lot of research resources here at home, > that's why I was > holding off on this. 3. Hello everyone, I just finished phase one in the construction of a "new" old site. After I moved my Loy site to Rootsweb.com, I kept the old account at Fortunecity.com still open, where as of today it's now a site dedicated to stuff pertaining to Effingham County. The daughter of my grandmother's cousin has the 1935 Old Settlers' Reunion Bulletin, which I scanned and have on this site. According to this 20 page booklet, it was the first edition printed. I'm curious if anyone else knows of any later publications in existence, which might be able to be scanned for this site. This first edition publication not only gives a history of the county, but records deaths and marriages in the county during the past year. I plan on adding more stuff to this little by little. When I get time, I'd like to add the Effingham County State census, which I have on microfilm. Additionally, I inherited my dad's autograph book from when he attended White School in the late 1930s. I'm hoping the penciled autographs of his classmates will show up in a scan. There are two ways to access the site. One is by the original URL: <http://members.fortunecity.com/milennium/paddington/63> which was used for my Loy site. After Fortunecity changed website "street" names (Paddington 63) to user names (loyhistory), it can also be accessed at: <http://members.fortunecity.com/loyhistory>

    3. I received this message, which might be 'a source' for some Colonial Roots out of Virginia. Yes, it would be a trek, or maybe something to plan for, for next year? Don Silvius is one of the Administrators of the Shenandoah (VA) Gen Website. Because so many of my family lived and died in Shenandoah County, I have a real interest in the area as well as the people.  The second Saturday in April, we will be holding our third annual Shenandoah County Heritage Day.  This is at least, a "genealogy fair" and at most a "genealogists convention" - which is to say that in our first two years our attendance was over 200 and then over 300 people.  So we're not a secret in Shenandoah County.  Many many researchers have found new connections and cousins and made new friends.  We have a committee of 8 people who plan and arrange and plan some more to put on the event at no cost to anyone involved.  The only people who make money are the historical societies and non-profit organizations who attend, and the authors and the fire department who we rent the hall from.  I forgot, Shenandoah County sells books also.    Anyway, my point is, if you'd like to familiarize yourself with Shenandoah County, this would be a great time to do so.  Shenandoah County is about 90 minutes drive from Washington, DC and once you are on I-66, the next turn would be south on I-81 to get to Edinburg, where we hold Heritage Day.

    3. Congratulations on your recent find. That would be a nice addition to our holdings here in Effingham. Maybe you will come across another one sometime in your adventures. We would be glad to reimburse you. How many pages is the bulletin? 3. I don't normally talk specifically about genealogy products, etc., BUT....I went to the National Genealogy Society conference in Phoenix this past week. I helped in the vendor's booth for "The Master Genealogist" genealogy software program, which I have used for years. I took some time to wander about the vendor area to see what I couldn't live without <grin>. I'm always on the lookout for Illinois items to add to my personal library here in Arizona. Guess what I found? A genealogy bulletin from Heritage Creations. It is issue number 65, October, 2004 and cost me $4.95. The content is mostly censuses & substitutes for the Old Northwest Territory (includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin). Also included is a historical timeline for the Northwest Territory. Needless to say, I bought it, but didn't get a chance to look at it until tonite. If you have a chance to get one of these, I recommend it. Hopefully, the genealogy society in Effingham has a copy. I can see it being a welcome addition to their reference library. 2. Thank you Tony for all your help on the Kuhns family. Maybe one day it'll all come together. Faye

    2. Tony, Mary Weber's parents are John C. Weber and Catherine Ernst. Mary Weber was born 1867 in Georgetown, Brown, Ohio and died in Moccasin Twp, Effingham, Illinois on Dec 18, 1941. I don't have any siblings or any other information on the parents. Faye

    2. Hi Tony, Thanks for all your assistance. I'm confused about the line myself. Sometimes it looks like it adds up and the next time it looks confusing. On top of that I've only been doing this a couple of years now. Not that long at all. I guess you could say, I'm still a newbie. My fathers name is Lawrence August Roedell born 4/16/1920 in Altamont. His parents were Louis Rodolph Roedell and Fannie Elizabeth Kuhns. Louis was born Nov 10, 1889 to Joseph Antonious Roedell and Mary Elvena Woll in Altamont, Illinois. Fannie was born Feb 11, 1890 to Peter Kuhns and Mary Weber in Altamont, Illinois. Thanks again, Faye

    3. The earliest issue of the Effingham Democrat available on microfilm is 1861. Unfortunatly, it's an issue here or an issue there, not continuous. But there is a very long stretch from 1870 to 1900 in which many, many issues are available. An issue of the Central Illinois Register (pub. in Effingham) from 1865 is available on microfilm. There are two issues from the renamed Register from 1868. Microfilmed issues of the Effingham Republican begin in 1880, but availability of continuous issues is sporadic. Issues of the Effingham Volksblatt begin in the microfilm holdings in 1890. Again, there are big gaps and some periods of continuous issues. I love newspaper research, especially when it concerns German-American communities, so I am publishing a series of translations of Effingham Volksblatt issues from 1884-1886 to make early reporting more accessible to today's English-speaking descendants. These issues are completely continuous for a two-year period. They were bound together in a volume in the holdings of the Monastery Museum of Teutopolis. Several years ago, I photographed all the local content, including reports from Effingham, Montrose, Teutopolis, Sigel, Altamont, Edgewood, Bishop Creek, Shumway, Dieterich, and more. These translations -- side-by-side with the German originals -- are available in book form only (not on microfilm). Please see www.brumleve.org for surname lists. The books currently in print cover news from Effingham, Sigel, and Teutopolis from mid-June 1884 to mid-June 1886. I'm tackling Altamont next, and hope to publish that one by June 2005. I've also submitted a couple articles to the ECGHS quarterly for publication this year. These contain excerpts from the Volksblatt translation books.
