I have just received "official" notification that the gateway for the Effingham County Message Board on Rootsweb/Ancestry has been turned on. What that means is that from now on, every posting to the message board will be "forwarded (gatewayed) to our Effingham County Mailing list. To repeat myself...if you see the words "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list" and if you choose to reply to the poster, you MUST use the URL link in that message, or the reply will go only to our mailing list and not to the message board. That reply to the message board will in turn be forwarded to our mailing list so that we can all see the response(s). This should broaden the scope of our mailing list. Just remember that if you just hit "reply", the poster will not get your reply. Here we go!!!!!!! Let's have a good time with this and broaden our genealogy reach. Oooops....please disregard this message Linda
May I ask a favor? Would you mind posting to the Ancestry Effingham mailing board to see if it comes thru to the mailing list? I posted a test message earlier this evening and it hasn't come through yet. I wonder if I have the settings correct and/or if I need to ask the message board administration team to do something special. Linda, Thanks for the information about the new "gateway" addition to the Effingham list. It will be a great addition to the Effingham list! Several years ago the moderator of the LOY surname list (a distant cousin of mine) suggested we "gateway" the LOY surname board (of which I am moderator), which we did. It has helped tremendously and is a timesaver, since list members don't have to check the boards for new queries--they're automatically sent with the normal mailing lists. However, there are two things those not familiar with this procedure should be aware of: 1) Like you said, Linda, anything with a URL above the message (and stated as "gatewayed" to the list) should be replied to at the message board, not on the list. Just click on the URL given above the message and it'll take you to the actual posting where replies can be posted. Any replies given on the board will be gatewayed to the list, too, so other list members can still see the reply. 2) A old message board query (maybe even written in 1999) may have a recent reply on the message board, which will be gatewayed to the mailing list. So if list members suddenly receive a one sentence message saying something vague like "Do you have more info?" it's because the poster is replying to a previous board post that may not be in the current mailing. PLEASE PRINT AND SAVE THIS MESSAGE SO YOU CAN REFER TO IT. Effective perhaps at the end of the week, you may see other "different" posts coming through the Effingham Mailing List. The first line will read "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." What this means is that a posting has been made to the Effingham County message board at Rootsweb.com, and forwarded to our mailing list. As I understand it, if you choose to reply, you must use the URL link in that message, or the reply will go only to our mailing list and not to the message board. That reply to the message board will in turn be forwarded to our mailing list so that we can all see the response(s). This should broaden the scope of our mailing list. Just remember that if you just hit "reply", the poster will not get your reply. There should be no reason that this cannot work to the advantage of all. If you are confused about this (and I don't blame you), post your concerns here (or email me privately if you wish) and I'll answer as best I can. Tony....I have some information on Peter through my Ulhorn line. I show him and Mary Anna having 7 children. I inherited most of this information from family members and I don't have concrete sources, but if you wish to share and compare, I'll be glad to. I've been working on cleaning up my data base some, so I'll get to work on Peter's record and get back to you later today if you want to compare your information to mine. Again, I can't cite any sources for you, but it may give you a leg up and/or a starting place on where to look. I thought I'd better explain why I'm searching for a quart milk bottle from the old Koester's Dairy in Effingham. During my genealogical research on my family in Effingham County, I found out that my grandfather used to work there. Linda
As a result of this series of emails, I went to the library and searched Heritage Quest. The 1910 edition of - "Illinois Historical Effingham County Biographical" Munsell publisher - has great pictures of my family. If anyone has this book, I would love upon love a scan of two pages. Good images are not possible at my library. Part of my logistical impairment By "happenstance" I saw a bio of the brother of my great-great grandmother, Yippee. Great information about her parents. Dear Linda, I was delighted to hear you have bottles from Underinner's drugstore. The Underinners are cousins of mine and I was contacted by the local Effingham librarian asking if I had any pictures of the drugstore, ;pictures of early family in Effingham, or other memorabilia for the library. I have to go back in my e mail to get the name of the nice lady who contacted me. I'll send this info later unless you know already who she is... Suzanne Reedy Russell- grandaughter of Eda Merz who was a daughter of the Merz family who had a cigar factory in Effingham in the late l800's. A sister of Eda married an Underinner. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Lambert" <ktlkate@extremezone.com> To: <ILEFFING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 06, 2005 11:25 AM Subject: RE: [ILEFFING-L] Ebay searches with keywords: > Yep, I have two separate searches. Kate, I have both books - is there someone in particular you wanted looked up? I would be more than happy to photocopy some pages for you. I have found that the CD version, while cheaper, is not searchable. Each page is scanned as a picture, not text; thus, you cannot do a search for key words. (This I found out the hard way :~) I got one volume from an antique book seller on the internet, then another on eBay. The one I got on eBay - the 1910 edition, I expected to be a reprint, so you can imagine my delight to find it was an original edition!! Henry Bailey, my uncle, gave sets of the reprints to his brothers and sisters. I have my mother Wilma Bailey's copies, she passing away in January. The 1910 version has a lot more of who married whom, and who their children were in it, whereas the 1880 editions have a lot more of the historical information on the families. Kate, Did you want the whole book, or just a lookup for certain people? The Palm Springs library has an online subscription to Heritage Quest, which I can access with my library card number and do a lookup for you. Heritage Quest has not only the 1883 and 1910 Effingham Co. Histories, but the 1968 Effingham Co., IL Past and Present. These are all images of actual pages from these books. Many libraries offer Heritage Quest and/or Ancestry.com subscriptions for their patrons, if not for "at home" computers, at least for use on the library's computer. Yours might even have this available, too. It's actually pretty easy to check if any auctions occur with certain keywords in them, Dorothy. You get an email if any auction matches those keywords, I believe. Linda uses Effingham and various other words so she doesn't miss them, huh, cousin. You'll get hits for Effingham boots and the Effingham in Georgia occasionally...so some won't be relevant.
