Jeff, The book "Selected Records of Effingham Co." has records taken from newspapers, church records, cemeteries etc. I found the following taken from the records of St. Francis church in Teutopolis. Johann Leinen b. Dec. 6, 1820, Thersia, b. March 25, 1810. No death records. They may be buried in the church cemetery without a marker since they are not listed in the cemetery readings we have. You might want to write or call the church office and see if they have a record of their death. St. Francis Church, 203 East Main, Teutopolis, IL 62467. Tel. 217- 857-6404. They have been very helpful in the past. If you don't live near Effingham, you can order the microfilm from an LDS Family History Center. John Leinen lived in Teutopolis in 1900. I checked St. Francis and Teutopolis cemeteries and did not find him or his wife. I did a quick check of both the 1880 and 1900 Effingham Co. census and found them to be living in Teutopolis. Where would I find birth records for Effingham for 1881. I am looking for my Grandfather George Weston Long born March 11, 1881 in Effingham Illinois (according to a marriage license date 1906 in Ohio) Thanks, Rita Long
Hello everyone. I'm new to this list and I was wondering if anyone knew of online cemetery indexes for Effingham, Illinois? I'm researching John Leinen who was born in Germany in the year 1818. I found him in the Effingham, IL 1900 census. He and/or his wife likely died shortly thereafter. Any information on his family would be appreciated. Thank you. Jeff Leinen
John......I know of no online cemetery indexes for Effingham County. But I have copies of the cemetery books for some of the cemeteries in Effingham. I checked the DAR book for Oak Ridge Cemetery (the older section) and didn't find him. I checked the DAR book for St. Anthony's Cemetery. He's not there either. I also checked for a possible alternate spelling of Lienen. No luck there either. Have you checked with the County Clerk's office to see if there is a death record for him and his wife? The Effingham County Genweb page is now current. I've added the cemetery books that are for sale by the Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. They are on the "Lookups" section, just under the publications for sale by the Effingham County Genealogical and Historical Society. I don't have the "read" dates for all the cemeteries right now, but hope to be able to add that information soon. NEW lookup resource - "List of Effingham County Pensioners on the Roll January 1, 1883" I am the volunteer to do the lookups from that resource. Please use the link on the page to request a lookup. The records are incomplete in that they don't always show the date of the original allowance, but most of them do show the certificate number, the name of the pensioner, the town where they received their mail, the cause for the pension, and the monthly rate. Enjoy the changes!!! I'm taking a few minutes this morning, reviewing the postings that are on the Rootsweb Effingham County message board. For example, I just answered a query that asked if any cemetery books were for sale. You may want to go to www.rootsweb.com <http://www.rootsweb.com/> and on the home page, choose "message boards". Then search for a message board for Effingham. You will find 3, one for Effingham County Illinois (ours), one for Effingham, Georgia and one that is just "Effingham". I don't know anything about that one. Choose Effingham County Illinois and review the postings. There are some very interesting ones there, although some are older postings. They still are interesting and may lead you to some new information. Linda Effingham County Mailing List Administrator Effingham County Message Board Administrator
