    1. RE:Queries/Donating Information
    2. Linda Lambert
    3. I would contact the agency/group that you want to leave them to. Talk to them and see if they are interested in acquiring your data. My suggestion would be to contact the genealogy/historical society where people are most apt to go when they are looking for information. Since my research is pretty well localized to Effingham County, guess where my stuff is going <grin>. Find out what their conditions are. Do the records need to be in a paper or hard copy format? Do they need to be on a CD/DVD? Every location is different because their equipment and resources are different. Work with them so that you can submit your data in a format that they can use. And yes, I definitely would make that part of your will with a specified time frame for this to be accomplished. You don't want your records languishing indefinitely in someone's closet until they "get around to it". Also make your wishes known to your family and the executor of your will. Now, to expound on the message board/Genweb site query/surname differences. Remember I recently posted a message that said the Ancestry/Rootsweb message boards would be "gatewayed" to our mailing list. That means that every message on the message boards (and their responses) will be forwarded to our mailing list. I was trying to come up with a way that we could have the best of both worlds, and I think the gateway will do that, as the message boards archive the thread. The only downside to the Genweb page that I know of is that when an email address for a query or a surname goes bad, the entire query/surname contact ability is gone. You can't respond or contact that person. That's why I delete the queries and the surnames if the email goes bad. I usually find out about it from someone trying to contact them, the email bounces and I get an email asking why it bounced. If you change your email address you absolutely must contact me to have me manually update the information and change the link to the email format that pops up automatically. There's quite a bit that goes on behind the scenes on a Genweb page <grin>. I've been doing this for the Effingham County Genweb since 1997 on a volunteer basis. Goodness! That's 8 years already!!!! My reward is knowing that perhaps I helped someone yesterday....or today...or will help someone tomorrow.... <grin> Linda > -----Original Message----- > From: Barbara Smith [mailto:xsnos@softcom.net] > Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2005 1:33 PM > To: ILEFFING-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: RE: [ILEFFING-L] Important --- Re Queries on the Effingham County > Genweb Site > > Thanks for the insight on how these creatures work :~) > > Now one other query - you had a conversation going on with someone about > leaving research, photos and such to the historical society - perhaps in a > will? 3. Thanks for the insight on how these creatures work :~) Now one other query - you had a conversation going on with someone about leaving research, photos and such to the historical society - perhaps in a will? Having invested years of work, and recently come across many old photos, I would hate to see them in a storage locker somewhere or get tossed after I'm gone (although I guess I wouldn't really "see" it, now, would I?). Web pages come and go . . . the state library or historical society would be a wonderful idea for the original photos and certified copies of recorded documents, newspaper stories and such that I have currently acquired. I am currently scanning all the photos, grouping them by family/generation/name. Then I intend to burn copies of all the CD's and distribute them to all the family I can find!! That way, as many as possible will have what I have so far. Hopefully the bug will bite a couple of them, and they will "play it forward" so to speak. How would I go about leaving my research to either the state library or historical society? 3. Lynn, My wife is descended from Cornelius Phifer of Fayette Co. through his daughter Christina (Christy Ann, Chrisitana, etc.). Cornelius married Susan Lindsay Dec. 17, 1828 in Knox Co. OH. Susan was the granddaughter of Lt.Col. Jacob Reed, a Revolutionary War veteran and hero from Philadelphia. Cornelius and Susan bought public domain land in Oct. 1848 in Fayette Co. IL. They moved there with their six children, George, William, Lucinda, Emeline, Rachel and Christina. They had a daughter Mary after they got to Illinois. Susan died in 1878 at age 65 and Cornelius died Mar. 27, 1884 at age 79. They are both buried in the northwest corner of the Mt. Moriah cemetery north of St. Elmo, IL near his daughter Christina (Kristin on the tombstone) and her husband Edwin Hoar. This is all I know about Cornelius Phifer but I would like to know more about his family and ancestors. All I know was that he was from Kentucky. 2. Hello I am preparing my Illinois Pioneer applications for these five surnames from Effingham County. They are all ancestors of my terrific father, Le Roy Phifer Jr William and Rebecca GRANT OWENS came to Moccasin Township about 1856 from Knox County Ohio along with many other early settlers. Their daughter Sarah, married Dr. John PHIFER, who came in 1869 with his parents, who were married in Knox County Ohio in 1833. There are numerous Phifers who are descended from Silas' uncle, Cornelius of Fayette County, one of the first coming from Knox County. LeRoy PHIFER DDS, my grandfather, John and Sarah's son, literally married the girl next door, Lillie ENGEL. Her great-grandparents, Philip and Catherina METZLER came to Illinois in 1851. In 1855 their daughter Catherine married Louis ENGEL who had come to Illinois as a teenager before 1850. The METZLERs and ENGELS moved to Shumway from St Clair County. Louis ENGEL's son John, married Ida RATH. She was born in Summit Township in 1866. Her parents were Charlie (Charles Carl) RATH and Ernestina/Elizabeth GROSKOPF. I believe they were married in Mecklenburg Germany before coming to America. Lillie was the first child of John ENGEL and Ida RATH. John second wife, Mary APPEL, the daughter of William APPEL, was also born in Shumway, I am interested in data and pictures about my family. Mary ENGEL lived in the house John built in 1905 until she died in 1960. It was an incredible Prairie Vernacular house. Dr. John Phifer built one of the first brick houses in town. Are any of the houses of these families standing? I am interested in any information to expand my knowledge of all of these people. I am happy to share all that I have found. 3. Speaking of Legacy -- the South Suburban Genealogy and Historical Society (SSGHS) http://www.rootsweb.com/~ssghs/ had a nice forward to a series of articles about that. These were specifics, too, depending on what you have, paper reference material, old documents, CD's, photos, etc., including a Library of Congress e-mail Q & A about conservation -- which I've used -- excellent. I just checked the Website - quickly - don't see the forward, but I know it's there. Give them a jingle if you can't find it. Sue On Jun 23, 2005, at 11:08 AM, Linda Lambert wrote: That's true. 2. I got a question for you, cousin Linda. How many items relating to the history of Effingham County do you have in your home in Arizona? Keep your guess to the nearest hundredth....lol. 3. Quite a few.......<grin> Hubby says this house is turning into an Effingham County library/museum....... Have quite a few that relate to our Kralman background. I know the local genealogy society wants all my Effingham County books and I won't give them to them <grin> They put a hit on me at least once a year. 3. Linda, Like you I cringe also as some of the items could be used in the museum that we hope to have in the courthouse when the new court complex is done. This is our "history" of our county and would hope that others in the county could enjoy seeing what it was. Pictures, newspapers, books and advertisements of businesses, churches, schools help document our history of our county, plus it also helps document who lived here during this time. 2. Linda Lambert
    3. For those of you who are interested, there are quite a few Effingham Illinois items on Ebay today (I get a list of new items each day). For example, there are at least 2 St. Anthony High School yearbooks, some post cards, etc. If you don't know how to do it, log into Ebay and in the search feature enter "Effingham" without the quotes. You'll get items from Effingham New Hampshire as well as Effingham Georgia, but you'll be sure to get everything for Effingham Illinois. I cringe when I see Effingham items on Ebay. If it's something I can add to my antique/books/history collection, I try to get it, just to save it. I just thought I'd share the wealth today. Just be careful not to raise the prices of some of you start bidding against each other <grin> Linda

    3. Are you sure your grandfather was born in Effingham? The World War 1 draft registration has a George Weston Long born on March 11, 1881 and his county of birth is Franklin. I believe the town is Christopher. He worked in the coal mines.
