    3. I was reading a Query from someone not being able to locate a 'town' for a cemetery, even though they knew they had the right county -- the Town of Limestone in Kankakee Co. A gentle reminder, that the expansion States and the Northwest Territory were laid out in legal divisions of Townships, and those townships into Sections -- and that grid repeats itself across those states. Will Co IL GenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwill/ has an explanation of how this works (it's also a very nice site, in general), especially as many people moved up and down US Rte 45, paralleling the Illinois Central RR. In the Left Column Index, Townships, Layout within a Section, and Section Numbers are excellent references for how this works. Back to the cemetery issue -- TOWN can mean Township, as a location, but not a specific village. A township is a LEGAL town (Town Hall Meetings are Twp's as a TAX BASE unit) -- even if the early settlers didn't settle along the township Center Line Road or choose the twp name for their village. Northwest of Chicago, but still in Cook County, is Maine Twp. At the SW corner of Oakton and Dee Roads is a very old cemetery, "The Cemetery of the Town of Maine". Today, we'd call it the 'Main Twp Cemetery' because there is no village by that name -- the twp is now incorporated as the Villages of Park Ridge and Des Plaines. Each year as I drive up US Rte 45 through Northern Wisconsin, away from the Interstates, I pass at least a dozen old Town Halls, each by a crossroad, with a sign "The Town of . . . " with not another building in sight. It's a good reminder of the way things were for many of the people we are looking for, mid-1800's and 1900's. 3. From the Effingham County GenWeb Administrator - Linda Kralman-Lambert I have an Effingham County timeline on the genweb page. Even though a location may be in Effingham County now, it could conceivably have been part of another county previously. For example, if you go back far enough, the land that is now Effingham County, was part of St. Clair County. Before that, it was part of the Northwest Territory, and before that, was part of Virginia. You need to know when and where your ancestors lived and where the jurisdiction was so that you know where to look for your information. So....the moral of this story is....know the location and the time period. As the old saying goes, your ancestors may not have moved, but the boundaries and the jurisdiction may have. In case you haven't fully explored my Genweb page, I'll share the timeline with you here. Year Effingham County 1699 France 1763 Great Britain 1774 Quebec (Canada) 1776 Virginia 1787 Northwest Territory 1790 Northwest Territory, St. Clair County 1800 Indiana Territory, St. Clair County 1809 Illinois Territory, St. Clair County 1812 Illinois Territory, Madison County 1815 Illinois Territory, Edwards County 1816 Illinois Territory, Crawford County 1818 Statehood (still a part of Crawford County) 1821 What is now Effingham County was split. The western 2/3 was Fayette County; the eastern 1/3 was Crawford County 1831 to present Effingham County Also, don't forget that possibly some of the town's names have changed...(this is also from the Genweb page) * Barlow - Holland * Bethlehem * Boo Hoo - Moccasin * Bristol - Mason * Broughton - Effingham * Crossroads - Franklin * Liberty - Beecher City (thanks, Cindy Le Mons) * Welton - Gilmore * Winterrowd aka Tailhold Hope this helps. 1. Myers - Kentucky
    2. Charlotte Myers Ker
    3. I am doing some research on a group of Myers from Kentucky (mainly from Montgomery Co. KY). I have a letter dated in 1851 addressed from Brazil, IN to my gg-grandfather (John Myers) telling him his brother is dead. Names in the letter are : Elizabeth Myers John Myers William F. T. Myers with wife Elizabeth John S. Myers James G. Myers with wife Julia Ann. I have found these people in Jasper Co. IL, and Clay Co., IN. On a recent trip to Illinois and Indiana, I discovered that a Lewis Myers (of Montgomery Co., KY) who lived in Clay and Putnam Co., IN and is a son of a Henry and Hannah Myers (who both died in Montgomery Co., KY) and grandson of an Ulrich Myers (b. abt 1725 in Germany and settled in Fayette Co., PA which was once claimed by VA.) had a son named Solomon Myers b. 1810 who had a son named William "Jasper" Myers (b. 1 Apr 1849 and dies in Jasper Co., IL - buried at Island Creek Cemetery) and a twin named Newton (who is buried in Nowata, OK). I am trying to link up Lewis' son Solomon to the Myers in my letter. This could help solve the mystery of who the brother is that dies in 1851 in Brazil, Clay Co., IN. Any one have any ideas?? I visited the Genealogy Center/Museum in Greenup and found that a woman named Barbara Myers was doing research on Myers. I called the number listed and upon returning to Oklahoma, Barbara's husband Carl called me and told me his wife had passed away in Jan. I felt terrible for bothering him, but he was kind enough to give me his father's and grandfather's name. I was able to link them up as follows: Ulrich Myers b. 1725 Germany Henry Myers b. abt 1755 in PA Lewis Myers b. abt 1780 in PA or KY Solomon Myers b. 1810 in KY Charles Mannford Myers b. 1888 Illinois Carl Eugene Myers b. 1917 Illinois Carl (wife Barbara) Everytime I get into an area in Indiana or Illinois and start researching the Myers that are from KY...I find that they all link up to this Henry line. I believe my direct line is from Henry's brother William. Any assistance any one may have of the Myers in this county can assist me...even if it only helps to elliminate some of these Myers clan who all name their children after their siblings and uncles!!! Sorry this was such a long post! Charlotte Myers Ker

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Bg.2ADI/267 Message Board Post: Hi, My name is Foxie Hagerty and I'm the new State Coordinator for Illinois Saving Graves. If you have any information on any old abandoned, negeclted, or even a restored cemetery in this county go to Illinois Saving Graves and submit the form for it. I will then make a web page to link to the Illinois Savings Graves page for others. Plus, I would like to see all of these in the state of Illinois cleaned up and put to rights. I need your help. If you would like to volunteer your time to record cemtery listings for your township in this county or even the whole county email me from savings graves page to find out how. It's not hard and it's fun and very rewarding and the people you meet. So, let's all get together and see what we can do about our old and abandoned, negelected cemeteries. Also, if you have any old newspaper articles on any cemeteries old or new be sure to include that also. Thanks for your time. 3. There is no date range for me to go by from your note but her is the small amount I have from my Ingram search: Indian: marriage records book, Vol. 1 A-L there is record of a Dicia Ingram marrying a J. Carr on June 9, 1845. Is this Lenard Ingram's wife remarrying? In a book "School Enumeration Harrison County, Indiana for 1846 and 1847" there is a James Carr listed with who appear to be Lenard's children. Lemen 16 yrs., (probably Clement), Riley 13 yrs, and Emely 9 yrs. Last name of children spelled: Ingrim 1850 45th Dist. Harrison Co., In. Fed. Census Pg. 409: James Carr 63 yrs. old. Dice 46: Children: Rilley Carr 12 yrs.,(did James adopt these Ingram children?), Emily Carr 11 yrs, Wm. Carr 9 years and James Carr 2 years. That is all I have on any Carr. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Bg.2ADI/266.1 Message Board Post: Try the spelling "Daymude". The 1870 census of Mason in Effingham Co. has a family that sounds like the one in 1860 with the name Dazmonde. Their oldest girl, Amanda, is living a few houses away with a family named Sprague. Surnames: Dazmonde Ruffner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Bg.2ADI/266 Message Board Post: In the 1860 census, a John Dazmonde and his family were living in Effingham Co., probably Mason Twp. I am trying to find this family in the 1870 census. Does anyone know of an alternate spelling for this surname? Or, better yet, can someone point me to this family in 1870. Thanks. Barb.

    3. Barbara, If there are any pictures or history of business, church or schools, is things that I would be interested in. We here in Effingham are gathering artifacts of the county to be on displayed at the museum that will be in the county courthouse. So that all will be able to see what it was like here in Effingham County. This takes a lot of items to make a display. So if you have anything that could be on displayed we sure would appreciate it. So many of the artifacts have left the county. We have been collecting for the past several years what we could. If you would go on the Effingham Illinois web site [not the genealogy site] you will see the Effingham County and National Road Museum Association. Would appreciate anything that you might want to share with us.
