I would be interested in sharing information with you and receiving information on Marcus Lafayette's line. I also have his Pension files and Service record. From what I have heard, for whatever reason men would sometimes enlist in the service under an assumed name. It appears that Marcus Lafayette did this by using Lafayette A Parks. All of the Parks in Effingham County are related somehow so I am interested in them all. I am especially interested in any photos, letters, stories, documents etc concerning Parks or related familied. You can email me at rap1977@sbcglobal.net if you wish. Thanks, Richard

    1. Free Databases
    2. Delores Rochelle Walls
    3. Don't forget to check out what databases are available on your local library's website. For example, my Palm Springs library has free at-home access to HeritageQuest subscription for those having library cards. This includes census, county histories, and Revolutionary War file images. Other libraries have free access to Ancestry instead of or in addition to this, using the library card number as access code. Many libraries also have Newsbank access for free, which includes a newspaper obituary archive. For libraries that don't offer these features for home use, they might offer free access at the library's own computers. I checked Effingham's Helen Matthes Library's website, and they don't offer these free databases. However, I did notice Phoenix has Ancestry free for use at their library as well as Newsbank's database. For anyone with a Springfield, IL library card, Ancestry and Newsbank can be accessed at the Lincoln Library website at home or at the library http://www.lincolnlibrary.info/Reference_Links.htm Most big cities should have this free access in one form or another. If you don't know your library's website URL, an internet search can bring up the URL (most libraries are online nowdays!). Who knows, your library card might just be worth some $$ in Ancestry/Heritage Quest subscription savings. 3. For you all that use a genealogy software program to enter your information..I thought I'd share this. I don't have a monetary interest in this software, although I know Aaron Underwood, the developer/programmer, personally. He is very receptive to suggestions, and his support both direct and through his mailing list is exemplary. And best of all... Aaron is an Illinois native!!! <grin> The software program is called GenSmarts. I use it as an adjunct to my genealogy software program (The Master Genealogist). It is also compatible with other programs such as Family Tree Maker, PAF, Legacy, RootsMagic, Ancestral Quest and Ancestry Family Tree. What it does, is.. upon my command, goes in and "analyzes" my data, and provides ideas and suggestions for other places to look to fill in any "holes" I might have. It gives you the ability to "look outside the box". It has suggested places to look that I would never have thought of on my own. If a source is available on line, it shows that. It shows the free places, as well as the subscription places. If you don't have a subscription.for example to Ancestry, well then obviously you can't go there. But it will tell you what to look for so you can order films, etc. To check it out, go to: http://www.gensmarts.com/ There is a free trial there that you can download and evaluate. ....Just tossing this out for you. We all need things to make our research more productive and easier. This sure helps me. If you get Family Tree Magazine, you probably already know about this. That was my first exposure to the program.. (I found the Family Tree Magazine on the newsstand at Lang's in Effingham, across from the Courthouse on one of my visits home about a year or so ago). Let me know what you think!!! I think you'll like it. Linda

    1. Eliza J. Smith - Effingham County Circa 1856-1905
    2. Linda Lambert
    3. Looking for information on Eliza J. Smith, born August 11, 1856, and who died in Effingham County, Illinois on July 31, 1905. I think Eliza may be my 2nd great-grandmother on my mother's side. I have a copy of her death certificate (thanks, Claudia).that states she was a house keeper. Cause of death was exhaustion and the contributory cause of death was consumption. It doesn't give her address or who she worked for (if she lived where she worked). It doesn't state the name of a husband (I hope it's James) or her maiden name (I hope it's Reed). It doesn't say who submitted the information for the death certificate, either. I'm looking for James (possible husband), too. I've been looking for these two for 20+ years and this is the first possible connection. J. H. Walker, M.D. was the doctor who signed the death certificate on July 29, 1905. Would anyone know where his records are and who to contact for them? If this "is" my 2nd great-grandmother, she had children by the name of A. C. (male), Harvey, Ella, and William. I'm hoping that one of them paid for her funeral. Ella was born in Marion County in 1868. Before that, and after that, there is no record of Eliza Reed Smith or James Smith. They appear on the 1870 census in Marion County, Illinois with all their children. Then they all disappear again. The death certificate also states that Eliza was buried on July 31, 1905 in the "city cemetery", which I understand would have been Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham. I'm trying to find out who paid for her funeral. If it was one of her children, I can possibly nail down this relationship. Would someone be willing to do a cemetery lookup for her and if possible check the tombstone and/or cemetery records to see what is on it? Who would have the cemetery paperwork records? Who paid for the grave site? I'll gladly pay for time and expenses. I've checked with the funeral home in Teutopolis (Mrs. Habing was the undertaker). Their records go back to the 1940's only. I checked with Bauer Funeral Home (the successor to Habing's) and they don't have any of the records. Thanks for any help you can provide. Linda Kralman-Lambert (in Arizona)

    2. Mary
    3. Hio all, I have been driving myself crazy trying to find my grandfather. He was not a good man or father but he was a relation. He deserted my grandmother and their two children, so I have very little information on him. His name is Harry S. Davis. His mother's name was Ann or Anna. My grandmother has passed away so I cannot ask for it any more questions. The only story she ever told was the one about her mother-in-law changing my mother's middle name to hers without telling anybody. That is the only reason I know her first thing. Both my mother and my uncle were born in Decatur Illinois but I cannot find any marriage information for my grandparents in Illinois. My grandmother remarried in 1935. My mother tells me that she could not find Harry S. Davis so she started procedures to having declared legally dead, at which time she was told he already was dead. Below is information that I do have on at the family. I have found reference to an Edward Davis, wife Anna B., with two children when being a Harry S. and ancestral file on MyTrees.com. But unfortunately the e-mail address was no longer any good. If anybody can help with this I would greatly appreciate it. Husband: Harry Sturdavis (sp?)
