No problem, Steve....with a little luck I'll find it and actually be able to read it. I hope the information was etched deep in the stone......it may not be dark after 120 years. Linda, I agree with Matt. You and Dorothy and several others on the mailing list have been a great help to me. Already checked Barney Hilmes' obit in the 1929 Altamont News. That's where I came up with the name Mary (Marie) Deters. Prior to that, I had no idea who his first wife was. St.Anthony's church is going to check their church burial records and see what they can find. F.Y.I. They told me that their cemetery grave location records from that time period were destroyed in a fire. Again, thanks for the help. See, Steve......Linda and Dorothy are just awesome sources of information. I just can't say enough about the two of them. They're both just so full of knowledge.... I, on the other hand, am not so meticulous and devoted to Effingham County geneology....lol. Linda is my cousin and she drew me towards this group. I hope to meet her one day....she's been a blast and has taught me a lot. Neither of us live in Illinois, Linda is in southern Arizona and I'm on the east coast near Philadelphia, PA....so almost 3000 miles are between us. Wouldn't it be nice if we all had a little meeting at a diner in Effingham County one day? Ah, one day.... I will make it a point to go to the St. Anthony's cemetary and get a photo of Marie Hilmes' stone for you, Steve. No problem at all....my uncle and I can practically walk there. Well, I would...my uncle wouldn't...he'll get in the car...lol. Matt, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I would be interested in any info you can give me on Mary / Marie Deters. I just found out about a week ago that she was my great-grandfather Hilmes' first wife. <blushing> Matt tends to exaggerate a bit <grin>. I have him fooled. But I am flattered. Thanks, Matt. I think I've got this right......correct me if I'm wrong, Matt. Matt's great-grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. That makes Matt my second cousin, once removed on my dad's side of the family. Another thought, Steve.....what about looking for Barney's obituary (if you have not already done so). I am continually amazed at the information in obits. I've found information about adoptions, ex-in-laws, present in-laws, foster children, etc. I found my 2nd great grandfather by accident after looking for him for 15 years, only because one of my genealogy friends in Effingham found an obit for what she thought was his wife. I about discounted it, but decided to read it thoroughly and am I ever glad I did. It turned out it was the obit of a second wife that I didn't know about. Presuming that she was buried near him, I took a trip to the cemetery, and there he was, smack dab between his first wife (my 2nd great grandmother) and his second wife. I had no idea where any of them were buried. Now I had dates, etc. The clue? The second wife's obit mentioned 3 step-children, one of which was my grandfather (my mother's side of the family). Since you know when and where she died, have you checked for a death record? Or.....a burial record from St. Anthony's church. That may tell you the parents or next of kin. Death records back then are hit and miss. Some are great, some are not. If it was me, I'd give it a go and see what they say. I forgot to say that I checked the graves near her and found no apparent link to anyone. It looks to me like she is all alone there. I checked my copy of the "reading" of St. Anthony's Cemetery. I found a Mary Hilmes, born 18 Jan 1859 and died 1883. If this is the same one, she is in Section II, Row 6, Grave #1. This reading was compiled by the Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter DAR, Volume XII, 1991. Hope this helps. Steve, my mother was a Deters......her family settled in Shelby County around that period. Her great-grandparents, grandmother and grandfather and several uncles and aunts are buried in the small Catholic cemetary outside of Sigel, Illinois. I don't know that my mother had any great aunts or uncles from Altamont though. Marie Hilmes is most likely buried in the cemetary a few hundred yards from the house my mother grew up in....which is in Effingham. It's large though.....it'll be tough to find her stone, but perhaps she's buried near some of my own relatives. My mother's parents, Elsie and Herbert Deters, are buried in the cemetary I speak of. I'm taking some to visit family right after Labor Day.....would you like me to try and find Marie's stone, Steve? Perhaps her parents are right next to her....could be. She did get transported to Effingham and that could be the reason. During those years what is now Route 45 was Route 25. There is a Dewitt Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois, about 30 miles north from Effingham. ----- Original Message ----- From: <dt09371-order@yahoo.com> To: <ILEFFING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 26, 2005 5:17 PM Subject: [ILEFFING-L] Address on backup of Picture > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Harris > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Bg.2ADI/275 > > Message Board Post: > > I have a picture from 1920-1930 of my Grandpa Max Harris who was from > Oblong. I am looking for information on Mary Dettert from Effingham, IL. According to her husband's obituary in the Altamont News of June, 1929, she was married to Bernard "Barney" Hilmes of Altamont, IL around 1875 and presumably died sometime before 1887. They lived in Altamont and had a daughter Anna, born 3/14/1878 in Altamont and died 7/26/1952 in Altamont. Barney later re-married (to Mary K. Lipsmeir-Wasmuth) and they lived in Altamont until their deaths in 1929 / 1926. Does anyone know who Mary Dettert's parents and family were, and when / where she died?
