    1. [ILEFFING-L] St. Matthaeus Lutheran church?
    2. Judith Hepburn
    3. I have a baptismal certificate for my grandfather Charles Schmidt that is from what seems to be, in very good but cramped handwriting, St. Mattaeus Lutheran Church (?St Matthews) in Effingham Co. I've not been able to find it. Can anyone tell me anything about this church? Does it still exist, and in what city or part of Effingham Co.? The minister at the time (late 1860's) was named Bechtel. 3. If your ancestors came to America to escape persecution in their native land, you may want to look at this online exhibition by the Library of Congress. It gives a brief history of the religious sects that came to America, and you may view images of original manuscripts or art pertaining to the groups. Some of the databases are even searchable. Pretty interesting stuff! http://lcweb.loc.gov/exhibits/religion/religion.html Thanks to you all that sent me notes of encouragement during this latest scare with Hurricane Floyd. Just want to remind everyone to remember how important it is to backup your genealogy files, books and pictures! I lost my last house to Hurricane Andrew and sure do know what it's like to start all over. What a pain! Great hunting..... Kathy Conard Ft. Lauderdale, FL

    2. erin, good to hear from you again, and congratulations on you wedding this past summer. i'm glad you married into a good german surname. i have made contact with diana scott (she lives in colorado if my memory serves me correctly) and she sent me her complete listing on the averys. she knows of john h. bruner although she had less information than i. this past 4th of july, i went and visited effingham and harrison county, in and got quite a bit of information on our relatives there, but still cannot connect john h. bruner to anyone. i was hopeful that i could track him back to hawkins county, tn (as per his civl war records) and have some possibilities-yet nothing concrete. i''ll keep trying as this effingham posting, i am attempting to also get onto the avery and bruner rootsweb.com site. where are you now living? i hope all is going well with you and your husband and keep in touch. best regards, john

    3. John Your right, I was backwards confusing John B with John Avery. I do know that John and Cynthia were married in Louisville KY. I am wondering if it would be worth it to try to pull the marriage liscense as it might have his parents names on it? The wedding went well and hopefully when I have time and a more staple web page I will get some pictures scanned and posted. We are still living is St. Louis and are hoping to buy a house soon (I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I hate apartments). I also have Diane's complete list agan all 72 pages. If I find anything I will let you know. Erin ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. John I have been in contact with Diana Scott who I believe still lives in Palmyra. I believe that I have info on John and some on Cynthia (like who her real parents were and how she was related to Judge Bryant). Let me look at my file tonight to see what I have. Alot of the info is not in my geocom because I have it all on paper (ALL 67 PAGES of DESCENDENTS). I do know that there is a connection with the other families because one of John's ancestors actually was one of the first settlers (if not founders) of the town. Let me look and I will get back to you. Erin Henderson Schmidt ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [ILEFFING-L] Bruners from Harrison County, IN
    2. With all the recent activity on the Bruner page, I decided to try again to seek any information on John H. Bruner who was living in Harrison County, IN in the 1850 census. According to his Civil War enlistment papers, John H. Bruner was born in about 1823 in Hawkins County, TN (as were several other Harrison County, IN Bruner families-although I cannot make a connection.) John married Cynthia Ann Avery and had five children, Isaac H., Susan, Mary Jane, Joseph and Nancy Caroline. John enlisted in Company C, 49th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in Oct 1861. He and the company subsequently ended up in Bardstown, KY where John died of pneumonia in Jan 1862. His widow, Cynthia and their children later went to Effingham County, IL, probably with other Harrison County pioneers who went there. Cynthia later moved back to Harrison County, IN according to pension records where she and her daughter Mary Jane [Wise] Montgomery are recorded to have died. Any information on JohnH. Bruner, his parents, siblings and descendants would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John S. Raschke

    3. Kevin, Thank you very much for the information. All I had to go on was a letter my descendent received from his Uncle telling about John Martin's death in 1873-4 killed in a freak accident. He, John, was putting a new wagon body on and the team of horses bolted runing over him. He died three days later. Stating it happened in Ewington. Is Watson, Ill near there by any chance? Mary -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Perkins [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, August 31, 1999 8:04 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ILEFFING-L] Newspapers in Ewington, Effingham Co. Dear Mary: The Effingham County seat located at Ewington was removed in 1859 to Effingham. The old courthouse was used as a poor farm until it was moved to South of Effingham in 1880. Most of the town was abandoned by 1875 or so. There were Ewington papers and copies of these (very few no more than 15 I think) are at the State Historical Library in Springfield. Most of the dates that I remember after reading them were in the 1840's. The newspapers in Ewington were moved into Effingham during 1860-61 time period. You would have better luck searching for an Effingham Paper for the 1874 period. 3. Ron, If Tillie and Michael Lux were married at St. Joseph's, they would have to get their marriage registered in Jasper Co. I searched the Effingham Co. books and they are not there. You might have better luck in Jasper Co. Audrey
