    1. [ILEFFING-L] New Policy for Queries on ILGenWeb Page
    2. Linda Kralman-Lambert
    3. Well, I've gone ahead and done it! After reading all the supportive replies and your suggestions and hints, I posted my new policy on the Effingham County GenWeb page. You are all welcome to go there and check things out. I fully expect to take a lot of flak about this (not from the list people because you have been so supportive), but it's a step I felt I had to take. I have set pretty high standards for the Effingham County page, and I feel that if I can't do it right, I should not do it at all. Thanks again for all your support, you have no idea how much it means to me. 3. Linda, Sounds good to me! It is sometimes helpful when older queries are archived in some way, but as you mentioned, the email addresses often change and I'm sure it is a trick to try to change on the query. Thanks for all the work you do and don't forget to ask for help if you need it! 3. sounds great to me. Just to let you all know. I just purchased the Family Tree Maker 20 CD set. I would be willing to do some limited look ups for people that might not have this program. just let me know if I can help out a little. Thanks and here are the list of CD's i have now. Would love to see if any of you might have some info on some of the surnames I have been searching on. They would be : Wilhelm Altmann 9 Jun 1842-30 Sept 1918 Also his wife Wilhelmina Muccow 31 May 1843-9 Feb 1932 I have found that they are buried at the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery and have been there. But it seems that that is all i can find back on my altman line. It appears that with Wilhelm, that is the last of using 2 "n"s and it changes to altman. We have found them to be in the Effingham Co. Census in 1870 and 1880, and thats all we have been able to find on them, along with their kids names in the census listings. Any other help anyone could have for me would be greatly appreciated. 3. Re Surnames: If I receive a report that an e-mail address is no longer valid and after I make an unsuccessful try to contact that person, I will remove that surname from the list. There is no sense having a surname there if that person cannot be contacted. I will only remove a surname if I personally have not been able to reach the submitter. The other reason for removal would be the one I initially stated in my first message....if the submitter asks me to remove it. Is that okay with everyone? I'm really trying to come up with ways to speed things up. Linda

    3. If you think there is a probability that I didn't receive the surnames/query you submitted, please send a duplicate to me "in the clear" at [email protected] Yes, multiple entries do confuse me and slow me down.....because I have so many to go through I can't remember if I've seen them before or not. Also, because queries become outdated or the information has changed on them, and the submitter wants me to go back in and change information from 2 years ago, I've come up with this idea.......what do you think of it? It would sure speed things up for me. IDEA: I will post all queries as they are submitted (with some editing for English, grammar and spelling). After a year, they will be removed. So if you submitted a query over a year ago, you could expect it to "expire" in a year...that way you could resubmit it with updated information, correct e-mail address (these are a bugger, folks), or whatever. Important: A surname would never be removed from the surname page unless it is requested. This applies only to queries. If this idea flies, I will post that information to the query page with an effective date to give everyone time to adjust. I would also post it to this list. This is a very unusal way of doing things, I agree, and this would be a pilot program. If it worked, I would do the same for Jasper County. I know several other county coordinators are interested in this concept, too. What do y'all think????? Comments (both pro and con) are welcome, and I'd appreciate them asap. I have two 3-day weekends coming up in November and would like to get this all done before I head for Effingham County for 2 weeks in December to visit with my family and hopefully do some personal research. 1. Re: [ILEFFING-L] I need your opinions re Effingham County IL GenWeb Page
    2. Linda, I agree with Patrick, whatever you choose is what we will, willingly and happily live with, I assume you are in contact with other owners and this has been a topic of conversation, and after all someone has to be first. It will force us "lazies" to get off our tuffs and make sure we keep our topics up to date. On the flip side of that I would like to say I have learned a LOT from old queries, that for one reason or another has been put on my back burner then suddenly I will get around to going to a county I have been putting off for many moons...and just hang out for hours reading the old queries. Another idea might be to archive (yes I know more work) i.e. a link to older than 97" then 98" 99," etc., that would still keep them available but you would not have to maintain them. And now back to the other side of the fence, if you totally deleted all old queries, (again) we would be forced to update our standing queries, and think of the traffic that will flow through our page. Just a few of my random thoughts. Now, could you, would you like a "query" assistant, yes I would love to apply for the job...... Someone else to go through the typo's, spelling, etc, and put the query in the format you need, someone to email you a list of outdated queries? A query secretary of sorts. Just yell, there are many of us here and available. PS, on the personal side, would love to get together for a lunch or gab session while you are home, yell on that one too. Fran Smith

    1. Re: [ILEFFING-L] Nice job!
    2. I need to apologize if my earlier email about having problems getting my surnames listed was misunderstood. I was trying to find out if I was having trouble getting thru with my email or something as this message from Kevin suggests. I did NOT intend to imply that there is a problem at the website. What I really need to know is if I should keep retrying to send the info; I am afraid of adding to the work by giving multiple emails with the same entries. I've been sending about once a month or so and am afraid to keep doing so; I really don't want to add too much. Mea Culpa for any earlier misunderstanding. 3. There are no problems with the surname list except for the sheer volume of names that I have to input and the queries that are backlogged and the problems with maintaining the pages for good e-mail addresses. 90% of the time is spent fixing and correcting links and bad e-mail addresses. I spend about 20 hours a week on Effingham County, just maintaining it without adding anything because of all the changes that are submitted. FYI...I work full time and also manage the Jasper County web page. I volunteer to do this, and it is not a "paid" position. I do the best I can, and if that's not good enough, I'll be forced to shut the page down....and I don't want to do that.
