My grandfather was Clement Abram Workman son of Joshua and Margaret Hedges Workman. Joshua was the son of Israel and Rebecca Neely Workman. Joshua and Israel are buried in Effingham County. Would like to hear from any relatives.
Audrey, I am new to this list, and had not seen anything, and was just wondering if everyone, like my ancestors, were lost in space... : )... This person is still here I guess. After all the problems with the viruses and lightening I am ready to go again. Maybe people are too busy this summer to play with genealogy. ----- Original Message ----- From: Debra Rosenbloom <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 10, 2000 12:20 AM Subject: [ILEFFING-L] Colwell > Is there anyone on this list? I guess I am still here too, after all the virus and lightening problems. This morning I couldn't get on-line so I wondered what next. It seems to be alright now. Guess PD was doing some housekeeping. ----- Original Message ----- From: Audrey Garbe <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 10, 2000 10:26 AM Subject: Re: [ILEFFING-L] Colwell > Hi Debbie, I'm still here. Does anyone know anything about Frank Tegenkamp born after 1850 to Hermann Heinrich and Anna Margareth Aumann Tegenkamp? Was he the deaf brother? Would like any information on Frank or his siblings. Thanks. Melody PS...the deaf Tegenkamp brother was living with another brother. That brother choked on a piece of meat. The deaf brother could not hear the other brother strangling thus he died. I would much rather have names, and would like to find out if the brother who choked was Bernard. I know he died relatively early, within a year or two of his marriage. The only word I have on Bernard's death is that it was some sort of farm accident. >From: Debra Rosenbloom <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [ILEFFING-L] Colwell >Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 01:20:42 -0400 > >Is there anyone on this list? Sande: Yes, I have looked on the index and found the Nettie Hensley married to William McClelland. I use the index all the time, too. My Nettie would have been only 4 at the time this Nettie married Mr. McClelland. It is possible for my Nettie to have been named after the older Nettie, however I have not found a connection. John Starling Hensley was born Dec. 25, 1870 in Effingham County (I have his obit) Mattie Mae was born May 5, 1873 in Effingham County(I have her obit) Hattie Elizabeth was born November 28, 1876 in Effingham County(I think I have her obit). I can only guess that Nettie married after 1900. I think I got Nettie's married name from John Starlings Obit, but perhaps William L. Hensley's. John Starling Hensley died in 1932. His father, William L. Hensley, died in 1934, both in Effingham County. Mattie Mae Hensley Renfrow died in 1909 of childbed fever after the birth of Dorothy. Hattie died in 1965 and is buried in Gays, Illinois. Her husband, Charles Hooten, is buried in Paxton, Illinois. Thank you, I'll keep looking. Nettie Hensley was born about 1878. She was the youngest daughter of William Lafayette Hensley and Mary Carrel. Siblings were John Starling (Julia Mills) Mattie May (Charles Renfrow) and Hattie Elizabeth (Charles E. Hooten). There was also a male child who, evidently, died in infancy. I believe that Nettie married a Hager. Would someone know Mr. Hager's full name (or correct me if it wasn't Mr. Hager), their wedding date and place and/or children's names? I am a great granddaughter of William L. Hensley and Elizabeth Webb (Doyle) Thanks, Melody ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
The only Nettie Hensley I find on the IL marriage index was m. to a William McClelland on 2-22-1882 in Champaign Co, IL vol 001 pg 0112. All the other siblings were m. in Effingham Co. according to the index. So could be another Nettie. Have you visited this marriage site before? If not here's the address www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/marriage.html. use either the statewide or which ever county you want. I use the Statewide because you may not be right about one county. Good luck Sande Melody Carter wrote: > Nettie Hensley was born about 1878. She was the youngest daughter of > William Lafayette Hensley and Mary Carrel. Dear List-Members: I have been working many hours to compose the following. Yet, it only begins to scratch the surface of our county history. I would love nothing better than for this page to jog memories of people who know tidbits here and there that I have not listed or do not know. Thank you, Kevin E. I hope this is appropriate for the list... I just returned from Effingham Co. IL I Wanted to share some of my experiences there. First let me say, there are some great folks out there in this old world. One being the Mr. Pagel at the funeral home in Edgewood. I went to the funeral home there in Edgewood asking for his assistance to locate the graves of my ancestors. He not only looked up their location in his book, he copied pages from that book for me, then he lead the way to the cemetery and stayed with us until we found every grave site. He also made rubbings of several of my ancestors headstones. He was so generous, and pleasant making my visit there so rewarding. Not to long ago my Aunt Sara who is 96 years young, told me that my great grandfather was " A mean dude" when he died his wife Belle MOWREY RICE had him buried in Potter's Field there in Edgewood. And you know what? She was right!!! He has a large monument marking his grave with her name on the other side.. however she is buried in the main cemetery there. Several of their children who died in infancy are buried beside him, and listed in the cemetery records there. Thanks to all the kind people in the world who make "Family History" such a rewarding experience. I am proud of my IL roots!!! Marcia [email protected]
Found some more information: Abraham Goodknight was born in Louisville, Kentucky, March 21, 1825. In 1833, when eight years of age, he moved with his parents to Bloomington, Indiana. There he lived until April 24, 1851, when he married Miss Mary James of Elletsville, Indiana. Soon after their marriage they came to Illinois. They settled near Edgewood September 10, 1851, where he worked at Blacksmithing. He was kept unusually busy while the Illinois Central and Baltimore and Ohio Railroads were being constructed. In 1860 Mr. Goodknight moved his shop into Edgewood and in the fall of 1861 he and his family moved into their newly constructed home on Broad Street. The shop faced the street east of the home. "Uncle Ham", as he was familiarly known, was a highly respected citizen. He was a veteran of the Mexican War, having served during 1847 and 1848. He was elected tax collector in Mason Township nineteen successive years and served many terms on Edgewood's village board. Abraham and Mary Goodknight were the parents of Mrs. "Sis" Newberry, Mrs. Jennie Hall, Mrs. Louisa Cooper, and Franklin Pierce Goodknight. Pierce married Miss Dorothy Alice Leatherman. They were the parents of William Goodknight, retired traveling freight agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad, who with his wife, the former Lyda Rowbotham, reside in a new modern home on the site of the former Pierce Goodknight residence. Carroll and Berniece Weaver now live in the Abraham Goodknight home. Mary Goodknight took pride in being a relative of Jesse James. [Below the article is a small picture of Mrs Abraham Goodknight, sitting on the porch of her home] Another article in the same book: Thomas J. Gerbel was Edgewood's fourth Blacksmith. Abraham Goodknight was the first. He was followed by C.P. Leatherman. Both Goodknight and Leatherman had served as Blacksmiths during the Mexican and Civil wars. They are the grandfathers of William Goodknight. Walter Pfenninger became the third blacksmith.
Hi Sande, Small world indeed! Thanks to your note I now know Dorothy Alice was still alive in 1936. The last bit of information I was able to dig up in a old letter showed she was still alive in 1926. I'll keep looking for a death date/place so I can find an obit. Hi Larry, just read your other post. When I saw the name Gerbel I looked through the memory book and found Fannie Gerbel and Laura Gerbel. My mother remembers alot of these people who were at her mother's funeral, so I'll ask her about Alice Goodnight. I'll let you know what she says. Dear Eleanor, Thank you so much for the information you provided. It answered several questions that I had. I now know the location of the grave of Elizabeth Leatherman. She died in Golden City, Barton Co, MO and I have been searching there for her gravesite. I had no idea she was at Edgewood. The Harvey J. Leatherman and Mary T. Leatherman are children of Christian Peter & Elizabeth. I now know their birth and death dates instead of estimating them from census records. The rest of their children are: William, Jacob, Nancy, George, Elizabeth and Dorothy Alice (Married Franklin Goodnight) and my 2nd great grandfather, James Henry Leatherman. If you run across any of their gravesites in Effingham or Clay county, please let me know. Thank you so much for this information. Thank you!
