    1. [ILEFFING-L] Suggestion
    2. Linda Kralman-Lambert
    3. Ok....some of you wanted suggestions on how to strengthen the Effingham County GenWeb site. Here's my take on the matter.... I've asked and asked and asked (till I'm blue in the face) for you guys to let me know about family reunions, class reunions, wedding anniversaries, special occasions, etc. so that I can post them on the list. This includes town centennials, church centennials, anything that will bring people from far and near back to Effingham County. You'd be surprised how many lost cuzzies you can find that way. So....even if you live in heck's back acres, if you know of a family doings in Effingham County, PLEASE let me know. I'll be glad to put them on the site. We need to do much more of this, but I can't do it without your help. I get a lot of upcoming reunions out of the T-Town Press, but I don't get any other papers from Effingham County. I'm purposely not putting a lot of things on the site because I have a working agreement with the Effingham County Genealogical and Historical Society that I will not put anything on the site that they have available for sale. This includes census records, war records, etc. This arrangement has worked well in the past and I will not violate that agreement. In fact, I have a list of changes that I need to do asap (I thought I'd say that before Eleanor reminded me <grin>). There are sites at the state level that have this information and the information is expanded and updated regularly. I prefer to link to these sites (which I have done) as opposed to putting them on the Effingham County page itself. And...I like the idea of strong-arming my relatives. Tom and Doc!!!! Watch out! Linda

    1. [ILEFFING-L] Brumleve
    2. Melody Carter
    3. Dear Brumleve researchers: I have recently completed reading a book by Dorothy A. Brumleve. The books name is "A Family Abroad, Aloysisus Brumleve of Lengerich and his Brothers". I understand it is available to check out at the Effingham Library, as well as the Champaign IL Free Library. My connection to the family is through marriage, thus Aloysius and his offspring are cousins. I wish to comment on how well laid-out this book is. It is well documented, and easy to understand. Mrs. Brumleve spent the time to make this a readable book, unlike some genealogy books that just have lists of families with little paragraphed information. She has included stories and pictures, as well as charts and maps. I understand she traveled to Germany a number of times to research the book. If you are a Brumleve descendant, you will most certainly benefit your research by obtaining a copy of this book. I enjoyed reading it, even knowing I would not find any of my ancestors. I hope this information helps some Brumleve descendants who may be floundering around for accurate information. 2. James Richardson is the son of Henry R. Richardson and Mahaulda Catherine Nichols born in 1853 and married Laura Jane Jamison in 1878. Laura Jamison was born in Indiana and James was born in Illinois And this was done because everyone keeps saying no one is posting that it is a bad list to be on. Well, Please do not take me Wrong you should not believe everything you hear from people not on the list. A list is only as good as the people who are on it. I have family in Effingham, and they are pretty good people. So come on everyone make this a terrific list. I apologize if this offends anyone but this is how I feel. And will take myself off the list.

    1. [ILEFFING-L] Bad List? No Way
    2. Melody Carter
    3. Dear Effingham County List Members: I have been on many lists. I have seen lots of bickering, insults, and the like. NEVER has anyone on the Effingham list been anything other than helpful and kind. The fact that there is not a lot of activity might be interpreted as it being a bad list. As in my case, on one side of the family I've run into a brick wall because those ancestors came from Germany...and settled in Green Creek, Effingham County. Information is limited because there wasn't a large clan in the area. Also, information was garbled because of language barriers. I finally found my Tegenkamps on the 1850 census by going page by page. The enumerator started the name with a D and the remainder of the letters were illegible. There is no way a transcriber would have gotten "Tegenkamp" from what was written. Only with the census images was I able to find them. And only a descendant would know that those were the people he or she was looking for. On the other side of my Effingham County family, my Hensleys settled relatively late in history...Again, mid 1800's. They moved in from Tennessee, and North Carolina before that. Most of us interested in genealogy are looking for the past, rather than the present generations. In my case, I don't dwell on Effingham County. I know my information from Effingham County is limited, and those with whom I have come into contact will contact me when information is found. I'm reasonably certain that most people living in the county in the mid to late 1800's came in from somewhere else. I also know that it is up to me to VISIT Effingham County to compile what information is available. If not visit, there are research books available that I am saving my money to buy. This list provided great leads for me, aided a struggling "newby" and gave me lots of encouragement. (Thanks Joanie) The Effingham site gave me contact with those who have all ready been where I was. The only thing I can say about making Effingham County Genealogy stronger...maybe we should start contributing something. On another list I am on (Macon County, Tennessee) a group broke off to volunteer to transcribe. Our administrator e-mails us newspaper articles on genealogy in the area and we transcribe them (we're still with the Macon County List but this could not be done without making a new list.) As a bonus, until the entire project has been completed, only the transcribers reap the benefit of seeing what has been transcribed. When the project is completed it will be available to all. List Mom Linda: You gave us good pointers on how to post a query (I printed it out) What suggestions do you have for strengthening this list and the Effingham County GenWeb site? 2. Linda Kralman-Lambert
    3. We have a lot of new members on our list, so I thought I'd run this again for them as well as for a reminder for us who have been here a while. HOW TO POST A QUERY: All of us post queries from time to time. But do we "really" know how to write one? Do we know how to write a query that gets answers? Here is a format that would be appropriate anywhere. First, pick one surname (last name) for your query. Then proceed as follows: SUBJECT LINE:- should contain three items.... Who (the surname, in all caps) Where (location) When (date). If you don't know the exact date, use an approximate date. BODY OF QUERY - keep it brief and to the point. State the full name, being sure that the surname is in all caps. If you have a middle initial, use it. Try to keep the word count down. (The wordier you are, the less likely you are to get a response.) State the specific information that you are looking for. Are you looking for parents, children/wife of an ancestor? Don't make a statement such as "Looking for information on Joe Doe". That is unacceptable. Don't expect someone to read between the lines. Be as specific as possible. State exactly what you know and what you are seeking (birth, death, marriage, military). Don't give too much information....in this case, "less is more". Narrow your query down to a specific location or region (especially important if the surname you are researching is a common one). But, if you have some origin and migration information you should consider including it. For example, "John Smith who arrived in Massachusetts from England in 1810 and migrated to Effingham County, Illinois in 1830" might be better than just "John Smith of Effingham County, Illinois". It is very important that you do not use any abbreviations in your query. Not everyone understands genealogy buzz words. Be sure to spell out the state names...do not use the two-letter abbreviations. In a separate paragraph at the end, mention any other surnames that are considered "immediate family" to your primary surname. Do NOT put these surnames in all caps. Remember, you are concentrating on your primary surname. Do not list every family surname that you are researching because this makes your query ineffective. Make sure your name and e-mail address are at the bottom of your query. Yes, I know it is listed at the beginning of the e-mail, but repeat it at the bottom since some mail servers can actually show incorrect information as to the sender's e-mail address. This is an excellent idea for all your e-mail. Last, but *very* important...... remember to proofread your query before you send it. You will not get an answer if you are submitting incorrect information because of a typing error or oversight. If your query is not clear and concise, now is the time to rewrite it. Remember, the only surname that should be in all caps is the primary surname. Hope this helps..... Linda (the listmom)
