    3. Speaking of marriages, for those who don't know about it, there's the IL State Archives marriage database. The site also includes death and military records <http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html> I was wondering if anyone has obtained records from the State Archives since the policy was changed for out of state researchers. Two months before the change, I wrote asking for death records on my grandmother's father and stepmother John N. and Ladosca Frances Loy, who died in Effingham Co. Family records (probably derived from cemetery stones) gave John died 20 July 1930 and Frances died 21 June 1933. However, the online records show John with that year but with Frances' day and month, and Frances with her year but John's day and month. Apparently the tomb stones are wrong! I wanted to get actual copies of these for my records. Unfortunately, though sent in plenty of time, my request was marked "received" the day after the deadline, and returned to me asking for $20 if I wanted the search. Being on a tight budget after cancer treatment and returning to school, I've had to put this off. From what I understand, only those with out of state addresses have to pay. Is that true? If so, perhaps someone in IL could order this for me.

    3. What German churches were in or near Mason between 1864 and 1870 when my gg-grandmother Anna Mannherz (Manhart) transferred her membership to a Methodist church in Sedalia Missouri from "Ev. Ger. Mason Ill."? The family included parents George H. Manhart born in Baden about 1818, mother Anna born in Pennsylvania about 1822, and children (all born in Pennsylvania) Mary Elizabeth b. July 1852, Emma b. about 1854, George b. about 1856. Rebecca b. November, 1859, Susanna b. January 1860, John b. September 22, 1863, Jacob b. about 1864. Since Jacob was born in Pennsylvania in 1864 and they are in Bowling Green, Missouri in the 1870 census, they must not have been in Illinois for long. Any information about this family will be greatly appreciated. I am also sending this message to the Mason County list. Thanks in advance Alison mcintyr@uakron.edu

    3. Buried veterans' records now available on Web By Suzanne Gamboa The Associated Press WASHINGTON - Sally Naporlee turned to the Department of Veterans Affairs to find out more about her grandfather, who served during World War I. After a few weeks wait for a response, Naporlee learned from the VA that Carmelo Castorina is buried at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y. Unexpectedly, she also learned from VA that her grandmother is buried with him, a privilege extended to veterans' spouses. VA has made it easier and faster for the public to get answers about family history, old war buddies or famous war heroes. The agency put on the Web 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. The VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator, at http://www.cem.va.gov, also has records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. Joe Nosari, VA's deputy chief information officer for Memorial Affairs, said the records used to be on paper and microfilm. Private companies have put some of the information online and charged for it, but the VA information is free, he said. Naporlee, of Spokane, Wash., also learned her grandfather served with the Army's 161 DB unit, enlisting June 24, 1918. He was honorably discharged December 17, 1918. The VA's gravesite navigator includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information and grave location in the cemetery. The VA will withhold some information, such as next of kin, for privacy purposes. The site will be updated daily. Annually, about 80,000 veterans are buried at national cemeteries. The VA also hopes to add records for veterans whose families requested grave markers from the VA. Those markers may go to private cemeteries or cemeteries overseas. Linda
