Terry, Thank you for all the great information on the ASA family! I appreciate you help. Dona
Dear Diane, Yes, the info. is so helpful. I'm confused though because in your note you said "William and Mary Goodacre". Did you just type in the wrong name? Was it William and Mary Woods? You mentioned that they had two sons: Joseph and John who had come over a year earlier. Is it possible that they had two others? I think that George and William, Jr. were also sons of William and Mary. The family I'm descended from is definitely from William, Jr. He had twins named Henry and Charles, and Charles was the father of my Ggrandmother, Susan WOODS. Is there any way to find out if William and Mary had other sons? Please write back. Thanks. Beth
Hello Edwards County Researchers: I am going to throw out to you my big Edwards County "mystery" with the hope that someone with more knowledge than I may have an idea where I can continue my hunt. My ggggrandfather was James J. Hunt Jr. was b. May 31 1829 and died in October 1865. He married Susan E. Hill. According to Edwards County, Illinois Past and Present, James died in October 1865. There is no cause of death listed, no burial info, etc. and I have been unable to find a source for his death date. He is not buried with his wife Susan E. Hill Hunt. I have not found him in any of the information on Civil War soldiers from Edwards County, or in any of the cemetery records that I have searched. I have guardianship papers for his children that I got from the Edwards County Courthouse, but have not been able to find any probate records. If any one has an idea where I should go from here, I would be happy to hear from them. I am planning a trip to Edwards County next month and would really like to make some progress on my "mystery." Thanks you, Diane Bunting Lehner Searching for Hunts, Buntings, and Hills in Edwards County.
Hi Jon, I haven't touched base with you in a long time, but I think I may have some new Hunt info for you. I will go through my stuff and see what I have. Dear Beth, There is quite a bit of information on the Wood family in a story about Henry Wood by George T. Engleman, Jr. in Volume II of the Edwards History. There is also a picture of Henry. Here is a synopsis: William and Mary Goodacre came to Edwards County in the spring of 1819. William and Mary were married in Wymeswold, Leics., England on 26 December 1796. They had John b. 27 Feb 1799 and Joseph, b. 3 Nov 1807. Mary died as the travelers approached the southern tip of Illinois. She was buried near the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers, not farm from Shawneetown. When they reached Albion, Joseph and his father joined John who had come from England a year earlier. William remarried a Mrs. Elizabeth Shepherd Carter. William died in 1841 at the age of 68 and is buried at the Old Albion Cemetery. Mrs. Elizabeth Carter Wood remarried an Edmund Johnson. Joseph Albert Wood and Elizabeth Hill Shepherd had Thomas, William, Ann, Rebecca, Henry, John, Martha, Joseph A Jr., Laura, Rosamond and Frances E. There does seem to be two Wood/Woods families in Edwards County, I hope this is the right one. If you have any specific questions I will see what I can find. Hope this helps. Hi, I'm looking for information on the ancestors of Ira E. McKIBBEN of Albion. He married Mayme NAGLE in 1929. This was apparently his second marriage. He was born in Albion abt. 1887 to Edward E McKibben and Mary Jane Bunting. I would like to know more about his parents and siblings, if any. Thanks in advance. Karen
Beth-just saw this reply to you...what a great find! Hope it is new, helpful information!Good luck! Sue Fritz

John CLODFELTER (1780-1845) in his will, dated 17 Feb 1845 in Edwards Co., IL, says "...I give and bequeath to my nephew William A. SMOOT a certain tract or parcel of land..." How was William A. SMOOT his nephew. It would appear that William SMOOT may have been an orphan at this time. William was born ca. 1833 in North Carolina from which the German/Moravian CLODFELTER family had moved to Illinois. John CLODFELTER was married to sisters Maria Magdalena WALK (1783-1822) and then Johanna (Hannah) WALK MOCK (1772-1852). Terry Harper
Looking for information on Allen SMITH. He married Elizabeth Jane RAGAN in Blount County, TN and moved to Illinois. At some point in time, they had residence in Edwards County, as one of their daughters (Nancy Elizabeth SMITH) was born there in 1861. Allen died in 1877. I do not know if he is buried in Edwards County or not. I do not recall seeing his name lited in the Wayne County cemetery books. I will be grateful for any information on this man or the family Verdaine Hooper

Dear Diane, I just read your note about doing look-ups in the History of Edwards County books, and I am hoping that you will be kindly look up my ancestors for me. I'm researching the WOODS family of Albion, Edwards Co. Sometimes there names were just spelled WOOD on different documents, so if you could check both names, I'd greatly appreciate it. William WOODS/WOOD came to Albion from England in abt. 1819. He had his wife and son Joseph. bprm abt. 1808. I think that William also had three other sons: William, Jr. abt. 1800; George abt. 1805, and John abt 1795. They were all farmers. William, Jr. married Mary, from England. Children were Elizabeth 1839; John 1843; George 1844; Anna 1846; Edward 1848; and twins Henry and Charles 1852. George married Anna, born in England. Children were Elizabeth 1834; John 1836; Ann 1837; David 1839; Sarah 1841; George 1844; Gibson 1847; and Ellen 1849. John married Mary A., born in England. Children were Benjamin 1836; Frank 1840; Elizabeth 1842; and Mary A. 1844. Joseph married Elizabeth, from Eng. Children were Thomas 1834; William 1836; Rebecca 1841; Henry 1843; John 1845; and Martha 1847. There was a Thomas WOODS, born abt. 1824, married to Georgianna SPANGLER, who I believe was the son of George, William, or John. His children were Morris 1845; Charles 1846; and Alfred 1848. Elizabeth WOODS, George's daughter, married Atkinson TAYLOR and they had a son named Jessie, born 1858. I believe the WOODS were connected to the MICHELS and BROWN group which came from Maine to Illinois in 1817. I'm a descendant of the MICHELS and WOODS families through a marriage which occurred in the late 1800's, but I believe they knew each other back in the early years they spent in Maine. I'm giving you all these names and dates because I'm hoping that you can send me any information on these WOODS family members. There may have been another, unrelated family named WOOD or WOODS in Edwards Co., so I'm hoping this will help you recognize my WOODS family. There was also a John WOODS from England who was a merchant, born abt. 1802. His wife was Elizabeth; children were Ezra, Jessie, Lee, Frank, Julia, Elias, Prudence, and Ford. He wasn't one of the original WOODS brothers, but he may have been related. I hope I'm not sending you too much info., but I'm hoping that the History Books will have some more info. about this family. Thank you very much for your time. Beth Smith BSmith7439@aol.com

Hi, According to my father my great grandmother Ella Hall Carlyle was quite involved in the Women's Christian Temperance Union. As she lived most of her adult life in Edwards Co., I was wondering what info there might be about the movement and its efforts in that area, say from 1915 to 1940. Also, her husband, J.C. Carlyle (James Charles) was apparently mayor of Albion for a few years around 1917 or so. How can I confirm that information, or find out anything about his term, if he was. Any hints/leads/scoops would be appreciated. Karen Carlyle
