I'm just jumping into this without knowing all of your discussions, but on p. 416 of v. 2 of the Edwards Co. history there is a bio of John Michels who m. Margaret Thompson on 9 Nov 1843. Says they moved to Clay Co. IL late 1840's then to Kansas. He later brought family back to Clay Co. Do you already have all of this? Let me know if you want the rest. Pat: No, I don't have any information on Margaret Thompson right now. this would be wonderful to get! Thank you much! Sue Fritz
Pat: Thank you so much for this information on John and Margaret Thompson Michels....very helpful! Sue Fritz
Dear Sue, You must have read my mind because I was just getting ready to write to you! Before I forget, I live in NJ. My dad was born in IL and moved to the east coast after WWII when he married my mother. I was looking for John and Margaret MICHELS today on the census records at the Historical Society, but I didn't have any luck. (The Historical Society only has up to 1850, so I'll wait until the next time I go to the Nat'l Archives.) Maybe they moved out of the county? I think that the Mary THOMPSON who married William WOODS was unrelated. Oh, I found out that I can see a copy of that journal kept by John Woods of the settlement of Albion. They have a copy in Phila. in the bldg. next to the Historical Society, where they keep some other rare books. Unfortunately, it's not opened on weekends. When school gets out, I'll head over. There was also another journal written by someone named BIRKBECK. I think he married into the WOODS family also. They have both books there. I'll keep you posted about John MICHELS/Margaret THOMPSON. Beth BSmith7439@aol.com
Beth: there were several Thompson families, probably like the WOODS/WOOD families. Don't know if there is a connection with the different Thompson's or not. Sue
Beth: the only reference I have found to Margaret Thompson that married John Michels was that she was the daughter of Moses and Rachel, and was presumably born in England. Very confusing. So my answer is...I don't know where she was born, but I would guess probably in IL. Let me know if you find anything. By the way, where do you live? I can't remember if we have exchanged addresses or not. I am in Peoria, IL. Sue
Dear Sue, I just went back and read your note again; I see where your THOMPSON came from. Was there just one family, or were there others? Did any of your THOMPSON come from England? Maybe the Mary THOMPSON who married William WOODS was unrelated? Beth
Dear Sue, Seeing your note about the THOMPSON family reminded me about the two connections my MICHELS/WOODS family has with your THOMPSON family. I'm going to the Historical Society today, and I'll see if I can find anything about John MICHELS and Margaret THOMPSON. When did the THOMPSONS come to Edwards Co.? Was Margaret born in IL or England? The other connection is William WOODS, born 1800, and Mary THOMPSON, born 1819. At first I thought she was a second wife because of the age difference, but their first child was born in 1839, so I guess not. I just checked my census records, and I see that Mary was born in England, so I'm assuming that your Thompson family was from England. I'll let you know if I find anything. Beth

I am searching for any little bits of information on my Edwards Co. relatives. James Overstreet, my ggggrandfather, arrived in Edwards Co by 1818. He was married in 1817 in Crawford Co. to Susanna Holland. They had two children, William Henry Harrison Overstreet and Martha Ann Overstreet. James died in Nov, 1839, Edwards Co and Susanna had predeceased him between July, 1836 and Nov 1839. My gggrandfather, William HH Overstreet married Mary Anna Carney, daughter of Thomas Carney and Nancy Susan Warmouth. Martha Overstreet married Jackson Stennett. The Carney's left Edwards Co in about 1842, settling in Barry Co, Missouri. William Overstreet followed him to Barry Co about 1846. Do you have any information on these families, especially James Overstreet, Susanna Holland and Martha Ann (Overstreet) Stennett? -

I am doing research on Native Americans who settled in the area and "passed as whites" during the time when it was illegal for Indians to reside in Illinois. This includes my own family, Ratley in White, Wayne, Jefferson, and Hamilton. Any help will be appreciated. Ron Bogart, Salem, IL

I noticed several people asking questions about the MC KIBBEN & HUNT families, so I decided to check my data and I found one person from each family who married into my MICHELS/CHENOWETH line. I don't know if anybody could use this info., but I'll post it just in case. Dora Alice HUNT married Clinton A. CHENOWETH, born 1866, on 3/18/1891. Their children were Earl Henry 1892; Elsie 1898; Bessie Hunt 1900; and Bertha Annette 1910. I have a lot of info. on CHENOWETH family, if anyone needs it. Raleigh MC KIBBEN married Ada Lucille MICHELS, born 8/31/1907. I don't have any more facts on him, but I have plenty of details on Ada Lucille. Let me know if you need any more info. I am going to try checking Clay County myself next month when I'm back there. Susan is buried in Wayne County. I will make copies for you of my Hunt materials.
