    3. The article in the Edwards Co. History says "John M. Michels, Jr. was born in Edwards, Co.IL on 3 Jul 1822, the son of John M. Michels and Sarah Getchell who were born in Maine and had migrated to Edwards Co. with an extended family group, arriving here in 1818. Sarah married John, Sr. in 1819 after previously being married to his brother James who had drowned in Maine. Other children, besides John Jr. were James, Susanna, Pendra and Harriett. John M. Michels...lived with his parents near Albion as a youth. On 9 Nov 1843 he married Margaret Thompson. She was born presumably in London (this is the info Terry was talking about)) in 1825, the daughter of Moses and Rachel Thompson...Their children were: Sarah, Harriett (m. James M. Vice), James, John, Henry (m. Elizabeth Chandler), Elizabeth, George (m. Jennie Hamilton), Joseph (m. Mary Ann Chandler), William (m. Nettie Kittle), David (m. Jane Tate), Margaret (m. Mack Farris) and Lucy. ...Info previously sent...Margaret died on 11 Nov 1872 and she was buried in nearby Wesley Cemetery alongside their two sons, James and John...John died on 1 May 1896 on his homestead near Conconally in Okanogan Co., WA submitted by Leon D. 2. I think the reason(s) people don't appear, do appear, disappear, reappear, etc. are that sometimes the name is misspelled, making it difficult to locate the person on the index; sometimes they are living in the household of another person and not indexed (although in the later censuses, they are usually often indexed even when in someone else's household); and that sometimes they have indeed left the area, only to return at a later date! 2. Dear Pat, Thank you so much for sending us the info. on John MICHELS/ Margaret THOMPSON. Yes, I think that Sue and I would both appreciate anything you can tell us about Margaret THOMPSON. Also, did anything you read about John MICHELS mention who his parents were? I'm assuming they were John N. MICHELS and Sally GETSCHELL. 2. Dear Terry, Hi! It's good to hear from you! Thanks for the info. about Margaret THOMPSON. Yesterday I was looking at the 1850 censuses for Edwards Co., and I noticed Francis B. & Samuel THOMPSON (separate entries) who were both physicians whose place of birth was England. I have a Mary THOMPSON, born 1819, from England who married William WOODS, born 1800. Do you happen to have any info. on her? Is she related to the THOMPSON family from England? His household consisted of the following: 1 male under 5; 1 male 5-10; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 40-50; 1 female under 5; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 50-60. It looks as if the female in the 50-60 age category may have been entered in the wrong column. [1830 Federal Census of Edwards Co., IL] I'll try to get to the court house sometime to check for land transactions for Holland MORRIS. That should tell us when he arrived in the county and when he left; if you don't already know that information. Other than that, I don't know of any records that would have been created about his family when they were in the county ---- unless they murdered someone while they were here. :) Do you know whether there were any others of your MORRIS family who were in Edwards County? The 1820, 1825, 1830, 1835 and 1840 Census records list an Isaac MORRIS family. The 1835 Census also lists a William MORRIS. The 1840 Census also lists Washington MORRIS and James MORRIS. There are no MORRIS listings in the 1850 Census of Edwards Co., IL. Then the 1855 and 1860 Census records show a John MORRIS family; he being a native of New Jersey and his wife, Amelia, being a native of Pennsylvania. They appear to have moved to Illinois ca. 1853 [Land Sales, 1 Dec 1853] Early MORRIS marriage records in Edwards Co., IL: Joseph MORRIS and Hannah STONE, 17 Dec 1820 Thomas RILEY and Sary (sic) MORRIS, 22 Feb 1822 Robert MORRIS and Elizabeth McKENNY (sic), 2 May 1824 George MORRIS and Eda REID, 6 Mar 1828 George MORRIS and Polly HUES (sic), 26 Apr 1832 James MORRIS and Peturnasy/Necy FARMER, 24 Apr 1834 Miles MORRIS and Celia/Cealy HENSLEY, 21 Mar 1832 Washington MORRIS and Lucy YORK, 14 Oct 1840 Listed next to Holland MORRIS in the 1830 Census of Edwards Co., IL is a Marcus JOHNSON. He came to Edwards County from Ohio Co., KY. I noticed that your family removed to Ohio Co., KY. Do you know if there is a family connection of Marcus JOHNSON to the MORRIS family? Terry Harper

They incorrectly assumed that she was a child of the THOMPSON family of Albion who were doctors and had come from England. The Albion THOMPSON family built the 1842 residence which is now the home of the Albion Public Library. I would agree that Margaret was born in IL as her father, Moses THOMPSON, was County Coroner in Edwards Co., IL from 1824-1826. Given that he was here in the 1824-1826 time period, I wonder why he doesn't appear on any census records for Edwards County until 1835? (i.e. 1820, 1825, 1830) Terry Harper
