Obituary Bolivar Free Press, May 13, 1897 DEATH OF A. J. CANADAY: In the death of A. J. Canaday, which occurred at his home, 3 miles northeast of Halfway, May 5, 1897, Polk County loses one of its most valued citizens. He was born Dec. 25, 1822, in East Tennessee, and removed from there to Edgar County, ILL. When nine years old. He united in marriage with Nancy Ingram April 20th, 1845. He was the father of seven children, four girls and three boys, five of which survive him, viz: Jones Canaday, Mrs. M. A. Hickman and Mrs. J. M. Wilson, of Edgar County, ILL, A. Canaday, of Springfield, and Mrs. C. F. Sergent of Bolivar. His first wife died June 22, 1889, and he married Samantha L. Moreau March 14, 1893, who survives him. His main occupation was that of a farmer and stock raiser, and by industry and frugality accumulated a competence. He was diligent in business, prompt in his obligations, and though not active in public affairs was widely known and highly esteemed. These are the main facts in the life of a worthy gentleman, who was one of that large body of quiet, unassuming men, who in their day have done their duties well, in all the relations of life, and whose labors in the pioneer life have made this country what it is. Their lives deserve the passing tribute of an appreciative memorial and their labors, the fruits of which the present generation now enjoys, merit a constant acknowledgement. Funeral services were held at his residence May 6, 1897, conducted by Rev. Graves, of the M. E. Church, which was largely attended. After which the remains were laid to rest in Reed Cemetery. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - Helps protect you from nasty viruses. http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail
