The CHICAGO HISTORICAL SOCIETY is searching for a chain of direct daughter-to-daughter descendants of sisters of Nancy HANKS LINCOLN, according to Nancy Beunger, conservator. The society's research will attempt to match the blood of Abraham LINCOLN, son of Nancy HANKS LINCOLN, with that of her sisters or their mother, who would have the same mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) as Lincoln, as would any of their children. "We are also looking at the ethics of biohistorical quests," Buenger said. (Sarah HANKS, born 1788 in Virginia or North Carolina, and Mary HANKS, born circa 1790, are said to be the sisters. Sarah HANKS first married her cousin, James HANKS. Their children, William and Permelia, were born in Montgomery County, Kentucky. Permelia HANKS married LANDSAW in Morgan County, Kentucky on 19 May 1829 and migrated to Edgar County, Illinois. Sarah HANKS died in Edgar County in 1876 and is buried in Ogden Cemetery in Symmes Township. Local DAR members erected a stone at the site about 50 years ago. Permelia HANKS LANDSAW died 5 October 1891.) Women living today whose direct ancestor through a female line of ascent is Permelia HANKS LANDSAW of Edgar County, are urged to notify the society.
