    3. You are apparently talking about the 19th District on the 1850 Federal Census. No, it covered several of today's townships -- mainly all of Paris and eastern half of Edgar County. The western half of county was know as Grand- view & Embarrass Precincts in that 1850 Census. The earliest map for county is the 1870 which was repro- duced in a 3-in-1 Atlas/Plat Book by the Edgar Co His- torical Society years back. Although it is no longer avail- able, the Edgar County Genealogy Library can make xerox copies of specific pages. You can check out ECGL web- site at: www.tigerpaw.com/ecgl/ or email [email protected] com for costs, etc. Good hunting. In a message dated 8/9/00 12:34:09 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << I hope everyone on the list is familiar with the fabulous resource on original land patents at the BLM. >> Charlotte is exactly right. But I made an amazing discovery when I was in Edgar county doing further research. According to the Bureau of Land Management, Jacob Stoneburner bought 40A in Parker twp on 10/10/1839. But according to the Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales (http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data_lan.html) he bought the land on 12/22/1837, so apparently it took two+ years for the paperwork to get from Springfield to Washington DC. I mentioned this to a genealogist at the State Library in Springfield and he agreed that he had seen delays far in excess of the two years I noted. Even more peculiar is the fact that Jacob sold this same tract of land on 6/6/1836, according a deed recorded in Edgar Co., making me think it took more than a year for the paperwork to work it's way from the local land office to Springfield! The genealogist at the State Library was not able to confirm that this was true, but I wonder what other explanation there can be. So look for state land records, rather than the Bureau of Land Management, when possible, and even then take the date with many grains of salt. Regards, Nancy Mullen

You can find these from the land offices in the States that they lived. Like if they got an original land grant/signed on Sheepskins/ the exact location must be given or else they will send someone else's. The original land was purchased by one person and then subdivided. You should know this person's name also. Exact location is necessary. Hope this helps Muriel

    3. The earliest platt maps I have found(the owners names on land) is 1874/1876 depending on where. There is a place in Virginia that you can write or visit for earlier information on the original land owners. I will have to search for this address and will post it later. I have searched for earlier maps and can not find them. Muriel Joy Fisher wrote: > Doreen: > > The School Districts had numbers. 3. Doreen: The School Districts had numbers. I think I have some maps of school districts, but none as early as 1850's. Remember, school district boundaries changed from year-to-year as the school aged demographics changed. If you are referring to the census, the Feds divided the county up into districts if there was no political division of the county at the time. These boundaries were documented. Our library at UCLA has a whole wall of documentation about every census. Many large libraries also have this information. If you are nowhere near a large library, write to: [email protected] and ask them. Finally, I have never seen a plat map from the 1850's. Not on-line and not in any map library. 1. [ILEDGAR] Re: Early Land Maps
    2. Hello- I hope everyone on the list is familiar with the fabulous resource on original land patents at the BLM. It's at: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ With this free resource I was able to identify the tracts of land in Edgar Co that my BUNTAIN ancestors purchased 1835-38. All I had to enter was the surname, but you can tighten the search with a first name or specifying a county name. It gives a legal description and most amazingly a copy of the original document! Now indeed you have to go find your location on a map, but that isn't too hard once you have a legal description since the townships and ranges etc haven't changed since then. I went back to Edgar Co last year armed with the legal descriptions and found the farms my family had settled 160 years ago. It was a great experience. I hope this helps one of you too. By the way, the BLM has Indiana and certain other states also. I did the same thing over in Vigo Co IN. just as successfully. Charlotte Redden Denver

Our young bride married first in 1832 to John Harshbarger in Cabell County, VA (now WV), so she, at least, didn't stay in NY very long after birth. The surety bond was signed by Luther Doolittle. From this union were born John and Cynthia Harshbarger. Our Lydia shows up again in Edgar County, Illinois, in 1843 where she married John Brown. To this union were born six children: Martin, Elizabeth, Josephine, Mary Alice, Martha, and William. Lydia died 29 February 1868 in Edgar Couty; she is buried in the Wilking cemetery. Here's hoping one of you readers knows the family and will get back with me. Mike LaForest Knoxville, Tennessee
