    3. Dear Listers, I have some very sparse information from a story coming down from the past and circulated among family members. The story is that there was a house fire in Edgar County, Illinois . All the children died in the fire except one or possible two. The Mother and Father also died in the fire or were away from the home at the time it happened. It is Usually told that the parents were away and the fire started in an open fireplace. I don't know when this took place. One of the surviving children was a boy named DAVID BURTON. He was born about 1823. Maybe he was an older child and somehow was able to save hmself. As the story has been told the surviving child or children were found and saved from the fire. That suggests to me that David Burton was quite young at the time this fire happened. So I'm going to guess his age about 5 to 10 years.????? David Burton grew up in Edgar County and married Emily Stites in Edgar County in 1852. Shortly after they married they removed ! to Scotland, Putnam and finally to Adair Counties in Missouri. They Emigrated with Emily's STITES family. I estimate this house fire happened about 1833. Is there anyway this would have been written about in a local newspaper? What, if any records exist that would tell me about this event? I am trying to discover the parents of DAVID BURTON. This is all the information I have about this event. I will be most grateful for any suggestions. Taunji Stites Waterman in Oregon

    1. Re: Mary R. & Roystan
    2. I appreciate you taking time to write. In regards to Margaret Robertson Crockett. I am not sure of the dates but as you mention Col. Anthony Crockett was born 1756 so it would be normal to assume his wife somewhat younger. James R. jr. died in I believe November of 1754 and his youngest child Sarah was born in April 1755 following her fathers death. I believe I have read this will with mention by James of his wife with child. For Margaret to be an aunt of Judge George R. she would be a sister of his mother or father. I really cannot give an accurate answer but Margaret Robinson is supposed to descend from James Robinson that sent his son Jonathan to Va. to purchase land for the family from his cousin Col George Robertson allready in Augusta Co. John was killed by the Indians at Ft. Vauss in 1756 after purchase but before dividing land with family. Margaret is the daughter of John's brother William Robinson. As the story goes Alexander Robertson (a carpenter) went to help build a new house for William Robinson (supposed no realtion) near the last crossing on the New River. While there he met William's daughter Margaret Robinson and was married to her. I am wondering if Margaret R. Crockett is an aunt through George's Mother Margaret Robinson instead of father Alexander??? There was a long relationship with the Crockett family from Pa. to Va. There was a court battle that ran for years on this land that John bought. Old James had six and maybe 7 sons all over 6 feet tall. John was known as Long John and married a Mary_____and I believe her name may have been Crockett. When John was killed at Ft. Vauss he and Mary had a daughter. As this daughter was the surviving child she received the land and the land was traded to Crockett for a slave. If you are not familuar with this I have copies of parts of this. Also I can give you the exact location of Ft. Vauss -I have not visited it yet but intend to so do. I hope I am not confusing you more but I am pretty well confused myself and kinda feeling my way in the dark. Also note on my previous post that my birth is 103 years after my grandfather John P Robertson. This is accurate and represents two generations and is unusual. I have John P R.'s discharge from the civil war at Vicksburg, Miss. Also my mother was a Stableton and descends from the Stapletons in this area but no known to John Stapleton below.
