Hi, list. I'm trying to write a history of the Regular Baptists in Illinois, county by county. My work on Edgar County churches has not progressed very far. The oldest church in the county, of this faith, was called Mt. Pleasant, organized in 1823. Meetings wee held for several years in the courthouse, later in the Minerva school, still later in a meeting house about two or three miles south of Paris, and in 1873 a new church was built on Madison Street in Paris. This church had grown to 47 members by 1829, 64 in 1830 (in spite of dismissing 20 to form a new church called Bethlehem, east of Grandview). By 1838, the church had 118 members, and dismissed members to form two or three other churches, including one called Sugar Creek at Nevins. I have a photo of the Mt. Pleasant church building on Madison Street in Paris. I haven't been able to locate any of the records of the church, which finally closed in 1895. The Bethlehem church continued from 1830 until at least 1935, and the Sugar Creek church until about 1940, but I don't have any of their records either. I have some limited historical information, and some of the names of prominent members, but not many. The records of Providence Church, near Isabel, were in existence a few years ago, and I was able to obtain a snapshot photo of the brick church, a partial view from the front, and I had a painting of the church made on a placque which was made from one of the walnut pews. I think this church was active until about 1950. I will be glad to share the names of members I have, privately (off the list), and would appreciate any help that anyone can give me in this research. Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10518 Surname: Mattingly, Curl, Englum, Burkey ------------------------- Emmett F. Mattingly married Catharine C. Englum Feb. 8, 1899; his age was given as 31. His brother Raymond married Mabel Curl Dec. 9, 1897; his age was given as 24. That would make Emmett born about 1868 in Zanesville, OH and Raymond born about 1873 in Mays, IL (Edgar County). Their parents Francis J. Mattingly and Catherine Burkey must have moved the family from Zanesville, OH (Muskingum County) to Mays, IL, west of Paris between 1868 and 1873. The 1880 Edgar County census ages given would make Emmett's birth 1867-1868 and Raymond's 1873-1874. Their sister Dorothy's age would put them in OH in 1869-70. None of the children are listed as born in KY, but their father was born in PA and their mother in OH. Dekalb is in Dekalb County, west of Chicago.

I have lots of info on Ellsworth's brothers & sisters from Ohio. I am trying to learn why my grandparents went to IL. They might have had family there. DM
Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10515 Surname: SOUTHARD, DAWSON, DAILY, COOK ------------------------- Prairie Chapel Church in Edgar County Illinois may possibly be the little white church on a knoll outside Scottland Illinois. In the past it was known as Wesley Chapel, Prairie Township Chapel, Scottland Chapel and Friends Chapel. There is a cemetery there and anyone local can direct you to the location. I was there last year but I can't find my driving notes. This church's building was built in 1900 on the site of the old Methodist Wesley Chapel and was then called Friends Chapel and was a Quaker meeting house. My grandfather was a member and would have been 18 years old in 1911.

Am stuck at this point but am having ongoing research being done. I had traced Margaret down to the Joplin,Mo. area but had not pursued it at this time. Am looking forward to communication with anyone involved with these families.
