Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10574 Surname: NUCCOL, NUCKOLLS, NUCKOLS, NUCKLES ------------------------- All of the spellings of the surname are used by some family still today. I have a number of Nuckles in my data base and FEEL your Albert fits some where. All spellings and others such as Nuchols come from one immigrant James Nuccol in Blisland Parish (later New Kent Co) Virginia in 1676. I am particularly interested in identifying your folks in Illinois. I have several Nuckles in Missouri and feel that they connect to your people in Edgar Co. No fast and easy proof, just a migration path from Virginia, with a change of spelling in West Virginia to Nuckles. This is my hobby, so if you would like to US mail me as much information possible with your traditions and guesses I would enjoy studying your names. Doris DELL POB 4184 West Hills CA 91308

Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10565 Surname: Mattingly, Curl, Twigg, Sudduth ------------------------- Thanks for all this information. Tim's 2nd great-grandmother is DOROTHY MATTINGLY CURL. According to the 1900 US Federal Census, Dorothy gives her birthdate as September 1870 in Ohio. Dorothy and her husband, JEREMIAH W CURL were living in Buck Township, Edgar County, Illinois with four children during the 1900 census. It lists both Dorothy's parents' birthplaces as Ohio. Where did you get her father's birthplace as Pennsylvania? It looks to us that the census taker confused the birthplaces of Jeremiah's parents with Dorothy's parents. We'd be happy to send you a copy of the record if you are interested. We met someone else researching the line of RAYMOND MATTINGLY and MABEL CURL, so we will pass this info on to them. Which Mattingly line are you working on primarily, Emmett's? Amy and Tim Link: Amy and Tim's Genealogy Pages URL: <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~amytim/>
Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10564 Surname: MATTINGLY ------------------------- There was a genealogy compiled by Herman E Mattingly and published in 1969 by Progenitors of Western Maryland. I believe it was titled "Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Many Other Mattinglys" -- covering lineage from 1663-1969. I'm told it included many of those found in Edgar County, IL. Surely you can find a library containing this book if you get in touch with the publisher.
Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10563 Surname: AUSTIN, BALDWIN ------------------------- Baldwinville was a post office established 17 Mar 1846 in the North Arm community. Pioneers settled on the North Arm of the timber in the earliest area of Edgar County by 1816, thus the name. Same approximate site was originally established as Ono PO by Elijah AUSTIN 10 May 1831. Alanson BALDWIN was later appointed Post Master for Ono PO 18 August 1836 and ran it until it was discontinued 17 March 1846. At that time he had it renamed Baldwinville and ran it until 1864, then again in 1865-66. It served the community off and on until it was finally discontinued for good on 27 October 1873. Site was also known as Baldwinsville, because the settlement was named for pioneer Baldwin. Above data comes from a 32-paged book I compiled from National Archives Microfilm in 1991. My book contains maps of county showing sites of earliest villages and post offices; along with post offices, towns and city of Paris as they remain today. Lists of post offices and post masters include dates of establishment, appointments, discontinuations, name & site changes, etc. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, please contact me directly. Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10560 Surname: Brown ------------------------- Amy..I note your posting on the Edgar county board concerning Mattingly surname and the North Arm Church. I am a descendant of Aloysius Lewis Brown who was involved in the construction etc of the original North Arm church. I visited it several years ago. There is a Mattingly relative who lives near the church and is active in the small congregation. She does not have email. If you are interested in contacting her, let me know. I'll look up her address. I was also looking for records concerning North Arm and contacted Father Overman in Paris. He is a pleasure to work with. It will depend upon the year. I think that Father has records for North Arm from about 1880 on. Those previous have never been located, though I wonder if the Catholic Diocese which is headquartered in Springfield, Ill might have them. The Mattingly people came up from Nelson county in Ky, near Bardstown. It was a staging point for families that were migrating from the East. I have a book with various Mattingly names relative to that. Good Luck.
Posted on: Edgar Co., IL Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Edgar/10559 Surname: Mattingly, Roberts ------------------------- Amy, I was just browsing through here for fun, and saw several names that ring a bell. My husband grew up in Paris, IL. the county seat of Edgar Co. Amazingly enough, I have been in the old North Arm Catholic Church, just a few years back. It is surrounded by farmland, and is touted by the locals as being the oldest Catholic Church in the county, which is why my husband's cousin chose to get married there. The present parish priest for the area is Father Overmann, and he is stationed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Paris, IL. If you'd like to pursue getting a copy of the marriage record, St. Mary's MIGHT have some from that church. Let me know via e-mail and I'll give you the St. Mary's address in Paris. The other surnames you are researching all sound very familiar to my husband Mark. His mother, Dolores Mattingly Waller does not have any genealogy info, but I can tell you that her parents were Francis Jeremiah Mattingly and Belva Roberts- married in Paris, IL. MArk, my husband, said that he had always heard that "Grandpa Jeremiah's" family was from Kentudky, but he did not know how far back it was. Good Luck, and let me know if you'd like me to walk through the cemetary behind the North Arm church when we're up there next. Probably in June or July this Summer. Kathy Waller, Bryan, Texas
