Sarah, I've looked for the various surnames and have found the following: In History of DuPage County, Illinois (C. W. Richmond. Aurora, IL: Knickerbocker & Hodder, 1877): page 18: Both Enos and Linus L. Coleman are listed as members of the Big Woods Claims Society, a group that was formed by residents in 1836 to protect the land claims of members. I think the Big Woods was what is now Naperville. page 22: Henry Coleman is listed as a member of Company M, Eighth Cavalry Regiment. Resident of Bloomingdale and mustered Sept., 18, 1861. page 239: In the "Patrons Directory" is the following entry: "Schneider, G. M. Illinois [birth place]. Prospect Park, blacksmith, democrat, catholic, 1853 [year came to DuPage C]." In The Story of an Old Town--Glen Ellyn ( Ada Douglas Harmon. Anan Harmon Chapter D.A.R. 1928): On page 68: A listing from the "1874 Patron's Directory of DuPage County, Atlas, Danby--Milton Township" "A. Schneider------1846[when came to county]------Germany[nativity]------Farmer[occupation]." For your Christ Griiner/Gruner, have you tried naturalization records? I don't know whether a DuPage C repository has them or not, but you might want to check. Also check out the Web page for the Newberry Library in Chicago. If you aren't in the area, they will do research for a reasonable fee, and you can search their catalogue.
