    1. [ILDUPAGE] EHR,BARTHEL
    2. Hello Listers, I am researching the EHR family of Oberweis and Bettingen Rheinland. One of women married a BARTHEL and emigrated to Wright Country Minnesota; one of the EHR men emigrated to Columbia County Wisconsin; and his brother's descendants emigrated to eastern Iowa, primarily Black Hawk County. At least one of the Wisconsin family settled on Milwaukee's east side; and one branch can be found in Ward Country North Dakota. There is also a group of EHRs to be found in DuPage Country Illinois but the relationship between the groups has not been established. One EHR woman remained in Oberweis and married a BUCHEL and perhaps other EHR members are still in the area. If someone is doing like research on this family I would be glad to exchange data. LOUISE

    2. Dale Updike
    3. Hello all, I have just joined the list. I hope that someone out there has the parents of Ira Daniel BRISTOL, born Jan. 29, 1855 in Naperville, DuPage Co, IL. He married my grandfather's sister Martha Caroline UPDIKE Feb. 28, 1878 in Kendall Co, IL (probably Oswego). I have other BRISTOLS in my database which are connected to Martha's two sisters' husbands, so I am confident that if I can get Ira's parents I should be able to tie them together. 3. Hi, Everyone, I know Chicago is not in DuPage County...really, I do...but I am a sucker for vintage postcards and Chicago is pretty easy to find. Since our ancestors went to the "big city" to trade, I have a collection of vintage Chicago cards at http://www.usgennet.org/~ahildupa/vintage.htm Tonight I found a great site featuring vintage postcards of railway stations, the National Railroad Museum. This is the address for the Chicago cards (super neat!), and they have many others listed by city. Enjoy! http://www.nationalrrmuseum.org/stations/chicago.htm Pat Sabin

    1. [ILDUPAGE] Looking for Younger generations
    2. My father's name was John Raleigh Swikard (1904-1970), and he grew up in Chicago and Downers Grove. His father was Edward Swikard 1887-abt 1956), he married a Bernice Chapman, also in the Chicago area. His grandfather was Jacob Swikard (abt 1854-1910), a Chicago policeman from 1885 to prior to his death. He was married to Katherine Heelan, who grew up in Elgin, Illinois. Both of her parents were born in Ireland. I have wondered if any of the younger generations below me might be interested in what I have been learning, so I thought I might list names that I know have married into my family that I have no contact with. I have reason to believe that many would still be in the Illinois areas. My father was married to a Dorothy Near prior to marrying my mother. There were two daughters from that marriage, Barbara and Carol (deceased). Barbara married a man by the name of Fred Hendershott (the spelling may not be exact.) they had two sons I believe, and 3 daughters. These children would now be in an age spread from about 28 to 53 or so. Carol married a fellow by the name of Robert Berg (again I am not sure of the spelling) and I believe he may have settled in the Galesburg area. Carol died at 34 of a brain tumor, leaving 5 children from about 3 to 12. Those children would be today from around 35 to 46 or so. Carol and Bob lived in Florida prior to her illness. My father was 45 when I was born, so I had very little contact with my half sisters. If anyone out there recognizes the names BERG or HENDERSHOTT and has a link to the name SWIKARD, I would be happy to share what I have learned. Many Thanks, Jackie Swikard Shaffer

    3. Using the reverse directory search at http://home.netscape.com/netcenter/whitereverse.html Abbreviate or leave Avenue off to get the Westchester address, two people show up living there but that is to be expected because a number of the houses there and in the surrounding neighborhoods have long since been split into upstairs/downstairs apartments. Someone named Edward A Berg lives in the Elmhurst house and knowing Elmhurst, I bet the house is worth much, much, more than your Grandparents bought it for and sold it for. There will be an influx of NEW subscribers to all lists. They are/will be excited and want to share and become involved overnight. This is good. But while you will see new cousins, friends, and contacts coming on-line, joining email lists, posting surnames, they will be asking questions you have seen posted over and over again. Unfortunate as it may be, new users mean we have to reinvent the wheel once again. Please WELCOME these "newbies" to our list, have PATIENCE with them, help them and above gently teach them the rules by not overreacting. You can help them further by refraining from using a lot of initials and abbreviations in your responses. When discussing the FHC, please take a few seconds to type "Family History Center". Be sure to explain who, what, where, when, and once in awhile how. Don't assume. It cannot be overstressed how important your patience and help will be for the next month or so. Mistakes will be made ... there will be blank messages, no subject lines, or [oh, horrors] entire digest in replies. There will be subject lines like "Searching for "Smittie" Smith, ["Johnny Johnson"], ["Aunt Mary"] send all information". This is a good list and it is about helping each other. Let's be specific and clear in our responses to folks, and give a little extra in explanations. And, above all, please keep in mind, that new subscribers may know nothing about computers, the internet, and genealogy, resulting in many extremely inexperienced researchers. If you see questions regarding computers, software, etc, please respond to these questions off list if at all possible. Remember, you are the experienced one, the knowledgeable, the mentor. If something not allowed slips through to the list, please let it go by without response by you. I will take care of it from this side. If it happens twice by the same person, please just contact me personally to see if I am aware of it. REMEMBER one of these "newbies" just may have the proof you have been looking for for thirty years ... so be cordial, helpful, and informative as you can be! Thank you for helping to make and keep this an excellent list of helpfulness. Happy Holidays, Everyone. 3. Ditto from me! I still have reams of material to transcribe to the DuPage County ALHN site, but, thanks to some very generous folks, it has been a big success so far. Thanks to all who have helped with materials or transcriptions, or just by stopping by for a visit! I've just started the ALHN page for the county in Georgia where I have lived since 1985. I don't know one thing about the history of the county or the location of the historic sites, so this is going to be an education. When I get requests for directions or help with personal research in Illinois or Connecticut or East Tennessee, I always say, "Gee, I wish I could help, but I'm in Atlanta!" Now what's my excuse???! Hope you all (or ya'll, as we say down here) have a great holiday, and a new year of excellent health and abundance in all things! 3. Hi. I've recently discovered that some of my ancestors were from Chicago. I have a Wilheminna (Minna) SCHWERTFEGER who married Wilhem HUVE (or HUWE-we believe it's German) in Cook Co. 3-5-1890. My grandmother told me that Wilheminna supposedly came to Chicago from Prussia when she was about 18 yrs old - but that may or may not be reliable. The family may also have had some connections in DuPage County. Wilhem and Wilheminna had at least one daughter, Esther Wilheminna Huve, who was born March 2, 1897 and married Arnold Powell in Ingham Co., Michigan. Does this fit in with anyone else's research? Is anyone out there researching HUVE/HUWE or SCHWERTFEGER? Please reply directly. Thanks! Amy ==== COOK-CO-IL Mailing List ==== Please limit sig files to 3 lines.
