Ahhh yes, the Friends of the Library Scam.... the one where they take the $1000. worth of quality books you donate, sell them to the public for one buck a title AND then buy smut to loan out. What a racket. Been there and done that, won't again. I wish money and resources always translated into an interest in good research libraries, especially in historical and genealogical material. I live in a suburb of Atlanta that was the fastest growing county in the US for several years in the 1980s and is still a popular "bedroom" community of Atlanta. We have nice new libraries all over the county and they are wonderful if you just want to check out the latest novel. Unfortunately, they have virtually nothing on local history or genealogy. The historical society does, but they like to hoard and not share, and they're open very few hours a week. Ask our local librarians to get a book on an interlibrary loan and see how fast their eyes glaze over. They hate to do that kind of stuff! I am involved in research in a small East Tennessee town, Jonesborough, which happens to be the oldest town in TN. They have capitalized on that history and attract a lot of tourists. The national Story Tellers Society has its headquarters there and owns half the town now. Most of the old homes are B&Bs. All that money coming in from outside the town, but they care nothing about preserving or expanding their genealogy and history section of the library. They have a vault full of original documents and photographs and I don't know what will ever happen to them. I donated a book on our families, including a lot of town history, and it took the library fifteen months to get it cataloged and on the shelf! Thanks for letting me vent! :-| Pat Sabin

I can top both of you. I donated up to 200 books to the Los Angeles County Library system from my parent's library, thinking that they would be distributed among member libraries which lacked the titles. They were in excellent condition. Instead, they were sold to the public for $1 each. The value of them must have been well over $1000, at least, considering depreciation, etc. And, because of that, I resolved never to donate any book to any public library again for all the thanks I got and the appreciation with which these books were received. To John Stoddard: Well, beggin' yore pardon, but when you said that the genealogical section of the Wheaton library is quite good, especially for DuPage County, my sensitive sensibilities were struck! Do you realize that DuPage County has a million people in it? That it is one of the richest counties in the U.S.? Well, now, they had better have some good resources, is all I can say. John, you're probably from Chicago, now admit it. Even Henry Hyde is from DuPage County! But they do have good resources, and the Historical Society in DuPage County is quite complete. They also have worked closely with Wheaton College and the Blanchard family (some of whom were presidents of the College, which is Billy Graham's alma mater) Mildred in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin mallek@pensys.com
Anne, Most of the libraries that have I have found to have Bateman's book are in DuPage County including Wheaton Library. They have a separate genealogical section which is quite good especially for DuPage County. John H. Stoddard
For the person looking for a copy of the book on Histor of DuPage Co, by Blanchard. I have seen the book at the Wisconsin Historical Society Library at Madison, WI ( a trip to the library is worth the effort - it's great!). Also Higginson Books has reprinted the book. Check out there web site at higginson.com Carol Knigge
I know this isn't the book you are looking for, but there is another book, 'Etched in Time' compiled by Jill Gross that gives the history of the village of Roselle. Roselle is, of course, in DuPage Co. It can be obtained by writing to Roselle Historical Foundation, 102 South Prospect, Roselle, IL 60172 I think it cost around $15. Included in this book are alot of great photos, stories, and histories. I found several distant relatives in the book. Just an idea....
Re Blanchard's "History of DuPage County, IL "" My book "DuPage County Illinois Genealogical Records" shows only one edition of Blanchard's book. Are you perhaps thinking of Newton Bateman's "Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois & History of DuPage County" 2 Vols. (1088 p). which was published in 1882 & 1913. My book shows 18 librariesthat have Bateman's book. John H. Stoddard

I haven't seen that one, but there was a fairly recent history (maybe 1980's?) on E-Bay recently. I try not to spend too much on copyrighted books, so when it got up to $25.00 I bowed out. I have a list of companies I've tried in the past. All of them have search engines (I think), and some have wish lists so that you can be informed if it becomes available: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctnewlon/genbooks.htm Let us know what you find out! Hi, I am interested in the Jones family from this county, particularly, Daniel Jones.. He was born in 1843 and enlisted in the Civil War from this county. Fathers name that I have is Zerah Jones and Myraett Mead. Does this sound familiar to anyone on the list? Or is there some one who could do a look up for me? I dont know the township. Am interested in the siblings of Daniel. Thanks for any help, I know this isnt much to go on. The book "Illinois Place Names" (published by the Illinois State Historical Society) shows that this post office has had a number of names over the years: Bremen, Pierce, Sagone, Ithica and Itasca (current PO name). The name Sagone was used from 1850 through 1873. I was one of the persons who sent a "speculative" response to the original query. In the book "A History of Itasca" by Miriam Greenblatt, published by Itasca State Bank, and available at the Wheaton Library, there is an explanation which include the above information. The early Bremen designation was used because many of the German settlers came through the port of Bremen. At some point the name changed and I quote the book as follows: The Chessman farm (Chessman was one of the very first settlers) was considered part of the community of Sagone, which centered around Putten Hill, at what is now the intersection of Thorndale and Wood Dale Roads. The name Putten Hill came from the fact that farmers traveling from the Fox River Valley and other places to Chicago would "put in" for the night at the combination tavern and hotel. Other buildings near the crossroads included a post office and a blacksmith shop. The book explains tht the Chessman farm was built in 1855, so that is the time period referenced. If you are interested in the Itasca area, Addison Twp. or DuPage County, this book is very helpful. Another good book is a history on DuPage County by Rufus Blanchard.
