Here are 2 articles that were in the Clinton Paper 1-3-1879 An Escapade - The people of this city were greatly surprised, on Saturday, to learn that J.W. Stiles, the jeweler had abandoned his family and business and left for parts unknown. He left on the Chicago train, Saturday Morning, and before leaving left word with some person, that he did not intend returning and did not know where he should go. Mr. Stiles has been in Business in this city for some seven years and was generally regarded as a straight forwarded business man. While it was known that he has been financially embarrassed for the past year, there was no necessity for his leaving on that account, as the exemption law fully covered his property, he having only about $400 worth of stock. It is rumored that he left on the account of the extravagance of his wife, but how much truth there is to the rumor we do not know. He leaves a wife and child, to whom his sudden departure was a heavy blow. His stock was attached by J.D. Rogers for rent due, but we learn that Mrs. Stiles claims the property, and it is a question under the law, and it is under question under the law if she cannot hold it. Whether the reports be true or not as to the cause of him leaving, it is a hard case both for him and for those he left behind him. Sleighing Accident- Sunday night Albert Rundle and Ernest Field concluded to sleigh their girls, and they nearly succeeded, for when coming home, between Wapella and this City, the horses became frightened, and Field who was driving, was thrown out of the sleigh. Rundle jumped out and attempted to catch the lines, but failed. One of the girls jumped out, and the sleigh then partially upset, throwing Miss Sarah Wade out, striking on her head, injuring her spine so severely that she has been confined to her bed since the accident. Miss Wade was taken into a farm house until the boys got to the farm when she was removed to this city. Clinton Paper 10-14-1870 Sudden Death - On Wednesday morning last, Sylvester Baker, a hired hand of A.M. Peters, Texas Township, went out to the barn yard to milk a cow. The cow refusing to stand, he became angry and chased her into the field. A short time after Mr. Peters observing the cow standing in the field and not seeing Baker, sent his son to see what became of him. He came back and reported that Baker was lying dead in the field, near the cow. Word was sent to Coroner Hickman, who was taking Drs. J.A and D.W. Edminston with him, proceeded to hold an inquest. Drs. Edminston after making a post mortem examination, testified that the deceased came to his death from an effusion of serum at the base of the brain, a chronic disease, which could cause him to easily excited, and liable to produce instant death. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts. Baker was 45 years old and has been subject to fits for several years. Clinton Paper 5-31-1870 Page 3 Accidental Shooting - On last Saturday Afternoon, as two sons of Cornelius Sheehy, living south of this city, were all shooting blackbirds, the eldest, aged about 13, had nearly all of one side of his face blown off by the accidental discharge of his gun. It seems that he had discharged one barrel of his gun and was engaged in reloading, when the little brother in playing with the trigger of the other barrel, discharged it, the contents entering the right side of the face of the older brother, tearing out his teeth and jaw, breaking the cheek bone, and destroying one eye. The boy was alive yesterday, but there was little hope of his recovery. Article in Clinton Paper - 7-5-1870 DEATH BY KEROSENE A little daughter of Mrs. GARRIGAU, living in the north part of the city, was fatally burned by the explosion of kerosene last Thursday evening, and died at 9 o'clock Friday morning. It seems that she was alone in the house and attempted to kindle a fire by pouring coal oil from a can into the stove. The oil ignited and running up into the can exploded it, throwing the burning fluid over the girl, burning her face and breast in a horrible manner, and causing her death in a few hours. After all that has been said about the danger of using coal oil in kindling fires, or handling it near a fire, we should think that people would learn to use precaution. Kerosene should never be used, under any circumstances, to kindle fires; for although no accident may occur with careful hands, children will imitate it, with the result of the given above. Any help identifying the following would be appreciated. A friend's family photographs piqued our interest. Maybe yours too. In Texas Township near Kenney there was (shortly after the turn of the century) a place known as "Fairview Lodge." I have also seen reference to "Fairview Camp." There seems to have been a Dr. Craig involved, perhaps a sanitorium. Perhaps in the area where the Little Galilee Church Camp is now. If we can accurately date these photographs (and their enscriptions), it would help decipher some loose ends, including dates for other events. Naturally we would also be interested in the rest of the story, so to speak. At any rate, Happy New Year.
It seems I've found ANOTHER branch of our tree that has roots in DeWitt County. After my Harper family members moved on to Nebraska in the 1890's, some of them married Stone's and Bruner's. As I was going over WWI records I found Charles W. Bruner, of Wood River Nebraska. Lo and behold, he was born Jan. 1, 1888 at DeWitt County, IL!! I looked at Bob's marriage records and sure enough, his parents, Wm. H. and Anna (Stone) Bruner were married 11/11/1874 in DeWitt County. I'm sending his WWI info. in case there is anyone researching the Bruner's of DeWitt and wonder where Wm. and Anna got to. CHARLES W. BRUNER, private, b. DeWitt County, Ill, Jan. 1, 1888; enlisted at Fremont, Neb., May 1918. Sent to Edgewood, Md., manufacturing gas; injured several times with gas; now in cement works, Fremont, Neb.; son of W.H. and Anna (Stone) Bruner, Wood River, Neb. >From the Wood River Cemetery, Wood River, NE: Wm. H. Bruner, Sept. 18, 1850 to Dec. 18, 1910 Anna M. Bruner, Dec. 7, 1856 to Apr. 21, 1932 Charles is not buried at Wood River, but another son is: W. L. Bruner, 1896 to 1967 (his name was "probably" William) The Wood River Cemetery has many Bruner's listed, so if anyone would like the info, let me know. Kaylynn [email protected]

I would like to learn more about this Book of Obits from the Clinton Illinois Paper. Did you know if it is still for sale and where. Any idea when it was published? Approximately what years do the obits cover? Cheri Salz [email protected]
Even though I live in Arizona, my parents still receive the Clinton Daily Journal. Not every issue makes it here but usually 3 or 4 days a week make it. They usually come a week or so later. I scan the entire paper for information. I would be happy to send along current obits with all the info if any one would like them. They almost always include the mother and father's name, where married, to whom and any little tidbits of that person's life or hobbies. I lived in Clinton for the first 18 years of my life before moving on. I still have friends and relatives there. If I can be of help and this would be legal for me to do, I would be happy to do it. If someone would let me know, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time. [email protected] com Linda Sprague-Gabel

I forgot to include the list when I sent the following post to Earlienne and Linda. - Mary Alice -----Original Message----- From: Mary Alice Thomas <[email protected]> To: Earliene M. I have the Title Page of the following volume, plus the one page on which my Cain relatives are enumerated: DEWITT COUNTY ILLINOIS - CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS Volume I compiled by: DECATUR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MEMBERS Additions & Corrections - 1977 by: Dewitt Co. Genealogical Society Indexed by: Edna L. Meadows Printed by: THE DECATUR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY Second Printing: August - 1977 Judging by the hand written catlogue numbers on this page, I must assume that I found it at the Los Angeles Public Library in downtown Los Angeles. Unfortunately I haven't been there in several years. It is such a hassle getting there - 20 miles on congested freeways and parking is almost cost prohibitive [ $8.00 to $10.00 per day] unless one can arrange to take a carload of researchers along. I hope that maybe this will help someone find a copy of this book. I keep hoping that Bob Halsey will include this one with his cemeterylistings. Mary Alice in CA P.S. - I'm also sending this post to Linda.
We have located Walters Cemetery to be one in Section 36 of Wilson Twshp. It is in the second edition (1977)of Vol 1 of DeWitt County Cemetery inscriptions??? Can someone do a look-up for Linda??? I also have an announcement and as of today, I will be taking care of DeWitt County Page. Please be patient as this is a first time effort for me and most consider me Computer Illiterate. Susan Has been great and trying to get everything simplified for me. Please remember that this is your page and I would like you all involved. I am a big girl and I am not insulted easily so if you see something you don't like feel free to let me know and if any of you have any ideas to make the page better let me know that too!!!!! Just remember that we must stay within copyright laws. As soon as I get some of the technical stuff down, I will be begging for new information. Wouldn't hurt if we had some pictures of the Cemeteries and old timers either... Any other suggestions?????? I am at your service. "E" (Note: you will see this a lot as I get tired of typing my long name) [email protected] I also can be reached on AOL instant messenger with my e-mail address and the screen name Map Queen, the nickname is a direct result of DeWitt County research. I had to use all the old maps I could find to prove that my Coppenbargers never moved after 1824 but the county lines did!!!!!
