    1. Cemetery Lookups
    2. I have been trying to locate a cemetery listing for my GG Grandfather that is believed to have died in either DeWitt (Waynesville) or McLean (Heyworth) counties. His name is Isiah Brown and he was born ca. 1830. Date of Death is unknown but believed to be after 1882, when his son William married my G Grandmother, Alice May Gelsthorpe. William passed away in 1941 and is buried in a cemetery around Waynesville. If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated. Kevin Haddenham Silverlake, Washington

    2. Went to Pekin Public Library tonite in Pekin, Tazewell Co., IL and found a book called "Illinois Centenial Farms" by Illinois Centennial Farm Heritage Association. Pub. 1986 Curtis Media Corportation. ISBN # 0-88107-060-2. On Page 123, an article by Alden L. HOUGHAM describes Hougham Hill. I hope somone finds it useful. There was a picture of the home also. "Moses Hougham emigrated from England in 1750. He and his wife Catherine settled in Wapella Township on Bucks road, coming here from Ohio with oxen team, covered wagon, and Parchment deed (still in family) signed by President Martin Van Buren. Built a small home on the homestead - now a garage. He was a Revolutionary War soldier living to be 101 years old. Their son, Moses II and wife Elizabeth, stayed on the homestead. They lost 4 children to the Cholera epidemic of 1854, kept coffins build and took the dead straight to Halsey Cemetery west of the home to prevent spreading the disease. Their son, Andrew and wife, Mary, 137 years ago built the two story house high on a bluff, overlooking Long POint Creek. The house remains much the same with hand cut sills and frame cut at Alexander Mill (which was located in the valley below, the mill made Busks Roads an important settlement; people came far and near to grind grain and cut lumber). Their son, Edwin Lee and wife Martha Parker Hougham stayed on the farm. Parents of Ferne Perry, Nellie Reynolds (by his first wife, Eva who died young), Joe and Harry Washburn (by her first husband, Eugene Washburn who also died young( and their son Norland. Ed bought heirs out at $50 per acre, some thought too much, plowed 5 acres a day with walking plow, 35 bushel average yield. Norland, too, stayed and married Malvola Hurd (direct descendant of John Alden of history ) and in 1925 built a smaller home east of the big house. Parents of Isadora Nusz (Berryington, Texas, 3 children, Alberta Chase, Glenn Nusz, Corene Mundy, 4 grandchildren), Alden Lee, World War II Veteran, farmer and Eureka Co. foreman (married Burnetta Bundy, parents of Alden Lee II, Gregory Edwin and Stacie Lea, 1 grandchild), Norland J., Jr. Wilson Township farmer and Eureka Co. employee (married Nellie Bradford, parents of Debra Colliver, Vicki Mearida, and Norman, 6 grandchildren). Norland enjoyed mushrooming, hunting, fishing, and trapping. Presently the 6th, 7th and 8th generations live on the homestead; Alden, Burnetta and 18 year old Stacie in a new home east of the smaller home, Alden Lee II (farmer and Wallace Computer employee) wife Donna Greenwood Hougham and 10 year old daughter Jessica live in the big house, Gregory (farmer and Eureka Co. employee) lives in the smaller house. Alden says the greatest chant it taxes..."I paid $3,925.00 in 1983 and Moses paid $5.48 in 1841." Also, it used to furnish a living for two families and now my sons and I have to work off the farm to make a living."

    3. 3 Articles in the Clinton Paper 11-21-1879 The Kenney Tragedy - Last week we published a notice stating that Ed and Robt. Wills, farmers living near Kenney had shot and fatally wounded one Thom. Cooley. The facts of the case as near as we can learn, are as follows: As Cooley was coming from Kenney where he had been on business, he rode up to the Wills farm, and into the bar yard. No one seems to know what his intention on doing this, but it was generally supposed that he went there to have a ditch question settled. But falling in this, he used some rough language expressing his opinion of Ed. and Robt. Wills, and then wheeled his horse and started for the gate, but one of the boys saying some thing to cause him to turn his horse and angrily start towards them, where upon one of the boys fired at him, hitting him in the face, the ball coming out from behind his ear. This was supposed to be the first shot fired. In all there was five or six wounds found on Cooley's body. The boys them selves do not seem to know what shots hit him. The brothers immediately started for the city, and placed themselves in the hands of the sheriff. The father of the boys, immediately after the tragedy sent a younger son, for one of the neighbors, Andrew Humphrey, who in the company with another neighbor, Lewis Town, procured a light and found Cooley lying between the cribs, which are located between a short lane and the house, where it is supposed he fell off of his horse. Town and Humphrey assisted Cooley to his home, which is about a half of mile west of Wills, the farmer being in Logan and later Dewitt County. Mr. Cooley lived about four hours after he was shot. His dying statement is to the effect that Ed. and Robt. Wills shot him without provocation; and that he was totally unarmed. Coroner Ewing was summoned from Lincoln on Thursday, the morning after the tragedy. The jury impaneled by him returned a verdict of "murder in the first degree." The Boys have waived an examination, and their trial come off at the December of the Circuit Court. The feeling in the vicinity where the shooting occurred is mostly against the boys. The funeral took place Friday, about 300 people attending. Death of an Old Resident - On Saturday of last week, a few hours before noon, Mr. Joseph Moore, an old resident of this city, was attacked with an apoplectic stroke, which terminated fatally on Tuesday morning about one o'clock. When found Saturday, shortly after he had taken ill, his head was lying on the hot stove, his hat having taken fire burning his hair and face. Mr. Moore was an old citizen of this city, having emigrated here about 1864-5. He was an unmarried man, his sister keeping house for him. Shooting Match - There will be a shooting match on the farm of P.H. Mills one mile west of Clinton, on Wednesday, Nov. 26, a fine lot of turkeys will be shot for. Go and get a Thanksgiving Turkey and have a good time. Have a Great Day :-) Lacinda [email protected] Page me on ICQ # 9870890 Family Tree Project http://www.geocities.com/~lacinda2 Join the Illinois Roots, Beckham, or Roth Mailing Lists http://www.geocities.com/~lacinda2/maillist.htm Post a Message in The Forum http://www.InsideTheWeb.com/messageboard/mbs.cgi?acct=mb220110

    3. Here are a couple of articles that was in the 10-17-1879 Clinton Paper Walking Match - a walking match took place in Dewitt hall on Monday, in which E.B. Barrett, W.W. Baylor and H. Johnson were the contestants. It was a "go as you please" match and the time walked was seven hours and fifteen minutes. Barrett made 36 miles and one lap, Baylor made 35 miles and one lap, and Johnson 35 miles. A Novel Wedding - On Monday evening Mr. William T. Kitts of Belleflower, and Miss Bettie Hutcherson, of this city, were united in marriage, by Rev. W.W. Faris, in the good Templar lodge room in this city. The ceremony was performed during the session of the lodge in presence if the members and a number of invited guests. After the ceremony that bride and groom and invited guests repaired to the residence of the bride's father, where a fine supper was served. Attempted Suicide - Another one of those peculiar affairs, in which every one seems like saying, but little about for sake of the relatives, occurred Tuesday night. Frank Nichols, our mail carrier, went to the post office drug store, and called for some strichnine, asking Johnny Schuler how much it would take to kill a person, where upon Johnny smelling a very large mouse, gave him the desired amount of subnitrate of bismuth instead of strichnine for which he called. Frank immediately went to the Scroggin's house, and calling for a room, Mr. Floyd led him into a large hall (Scroggin's) which is attached to the house; and in a few minutes loud, unearthly and horrible noises proceeded from the hall, where, when the door was opened, Frank was found in apparent agony, supposing, as everyone would, who had swallowed a supposed poison that his life had come, Dr. Oyler was called, who administered an emetic, to give him time to see the druggist, uncertain what he had taken, and upon finding out, of course, of course new all was right, as the drug was harmless, and had been given to him as all sensible fellows like Johnny Schuler would have done. The cries and yells of the victim soon brought a large crowd of curious spectators to the scene, who witnessed, instead of a dead man, a very sick one from the effects of the emetic. We are informed of circumstances closely allied to this case that reminds us of an incident in the life of a certain king, who when ever any trouble occurred among his subjects always said "where is the woman?" Frank says, and we hope he tells the truth, that he had been drinking, and did not know what he was doing. We hope sincerely that this is the case, as in our estimation, a drunken man is for better than suicide; and also in this case it was made a confirmed teetolter of Frank, who avows he will never drink liquor again - Mt.
