Thanks, >Lisa > I seem to recall something about "Servant in Residence." Maybe a reference in Latin, perhaps. I have often heard and sometimes recognized those seemingly familiar terms, but never studied the language. Then again, my memory may be playing tricks on me, but even so it wouldn't be unusual these days, let alone in the old days, for an itinerant domestic servant to have a dependant. Or three. Or so I reckon. Then again.... Hmmm...

    3. My first guess would be that it's really "SD" for step-daughter. I don't know if that makes sense for that family but it's the only thing I could think of. Maybe there's a colloquial term for 'adopted' or 'taking care of' that I'm not familiar with. 1. Good Queries
    2. Earliene Kaelin
    3. Thought I would pass this on: To make your query work harder for you ... keep in mind the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following as possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790s, late 1800s, etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this (these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS system: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember! Many subscribers belong to multiple list servers; therefore, many go through their mail looking at subject fields only. Unfortunately, messages with "My Family," "My Line," "My Grandfather," "My JONES," etc., as subjects are deleted without ever being opened. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update it as necessary. Use it again about once a quarter to touch base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts queries. REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT ... by Jim Young

    2. In the 1880 Census for Sedgwicke Co. KS my grt. grt. grandmother was listed as Anna and born in Illinois. I have no idea what county she was born in that is why I have gone to the county list of IL for help. I went to the LDS center and her husband had a pedigree and that is where I found her listed as Rhoda Ann Chapman, but someone had guessed that she had been born in 1849 in Nashville, Davidson Co, TN. So would you please help me find her and thanks and blessings to you. Pastor Barbara

    2. Lisa Fehrenbach
    3. Hello, My ancestors are Mose Larry ( son of Timothy Leary) and Lillie Belle Rogers. They were married in DeWitt County on October 20, 1880. My question is: Lillie is listed on the 1880 census with the George Patton family along with a 6 month old girl "A. May" Rogers. Is anyone researching the Patton family from DeWitt county?? I'm trying to figure out what this means...Is A.May perhaps her child born out of wedlock?? Is she perhaps related to George Patton's wife Hannah?? Is she a servant living in the household? Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has knowledge of the George Patton family. Thanks, Lisa Fehrenbach DePere, WI

    1. Abbott/Morrow
    2. Is anyone researching the Summers or Morrows of DeWitt County? My lines intersect at William Harrison Summers and Rachel Morrow. William H.'s father was a William S. Summers born abt. 1802 and married to a Cynthia Ann Isham in Indiana. I have a marriage certificate that spells her name as Synthea Ann. They were married on December 15, 1828 in Henry County, Indiana. I'm also interested in the last sentence of William H.'s obit. William Harrison Summers obit is as follows: <Monday afternoon at 3:10 marded the passing of the oldest native-born citizen of DeWitt county when William H. Summers died at home of his son M. K. Summers (my great-grandfather), in Weldon, at the age of eighty two years, the ? of advanced years being the cause of death. He had made his home with the son since his retirement from the farm in 1907. W. H. Summers was born near Waynesville, February 14, 1833, where he resided for many years, having learned the trade of brick mason from his father who came to this county in an earlier day. He worked at this trade in this county in various places, after going to Bloomington where he followed the smae calling for twenty years, returning to DeWitt County and settling on a farm near Weldon in ?. Here he made his home until his retirement eight years ago. In early life he was married to Miss Rachel Morrow, seven children being born to them. Those surviving are Laura, wife of P.M. Smallwood of Weldon, Mrs. Nellie East of Decatur, Elmer F. of Peoria and M. K. of Weldon. In the early sixties, deceased came into prominence here when he killed Postmaster Roberts, for which he was exonerated.> This last sentence is very interesting as I also have a line of Roberts from DeWitt county as my great grandfather McKinnon Kenneth Summers (the above mentioned M.K.) married a Getrude Roberts. I'm also looking for any information on The Morrow family, Rachel Morrow's father being a Leonard P. Morrow married to Sarah Williams and his father James Morrow married to a Sarah Ann. This Morrow family migrated from Indiana, most probably Fayette County, where Rachel was born and James died in 1845. Please, if anyone has any information, please please email me. I have had no leads whatsoever for a while and it's stumping me. Karen R. Abbott [email protected]

    2. Earliene Kaelin
    3. Can someone on the list help this person??? I found only the census reading below and nothing in the marriage or Cemetery records that I have. Please respond to her personally as she does not belong to the list Her address: [email protected] I need to ask a question, if someone moved to an area after the 1860 census and died before the 1870 census, where would be a good place to check for their place of residence...proof that they lived in DeWitt County, IL between those years?.... The gentlemen in question are Edward Caton, Sr. b. about 1819 in Ireland and his son Edward, Jr. b. about 1863, Pendleton County, WV.....Edward Sr. is reported to have died about 1866...possibly in DeWitt County... The reason I even suggest lookups in DeWitt is because his son, Edward, Jr., is reported to have made a statement regarding his father in a publication entitled the History of DeWitt County, IL under the Biography of Edward J. Cayton... I thought maybe you might find Ed, Jr in the 1870 census, some thought he went with his father...but it looks as though he went to DeWitt later...I know Edward Jr was in DeWitt at some point...I have a letter dated 1921 from Edward, Jr. to his sister in WV, it was postmarked DeWitt County, IL....and indicated that he had been living there for some time... At this point, I am wondering if Edward, Sr. ever made it to DeWitt, but his son seems to think so...also, Edward Jr had a sister, Sarah Agnes Caton who married Benjamin Franklin Bland, they were in DeWitt County as well...they were married in 1870, but I do not know which state.... I hope my info is not confusing, but I guess I need to now look for sources after 1870 for Edward, Sr. children...any suggestions...?...thanks, Caroline ALL I FOUND: 1860 DeWitt County Census John Caton wm age 29 b. I didn't buy it, but thought that I'd try to track down a living descendant that may be interested in it! It was so sad to see it hanging in a store! What I would give for a document like that for one of my ancestors!!!! The names were as follows: HENRY WILDY b.26 Sept 1868 St Clair Co, ILL HENRY WILDY of Pulaski Co, ILL married on Nov 26, 1891 in Olmstead, IL to LAURA A. CLARK. She was born 12 Sept 1869 in Crittendon Co, KY. Children: MAUDE ELISSYBETH WILDY b. July 2, 1893 CLARA KATE WILDY b. Sept 19, 1895-d.Jan 7, 1896 JAMES WILDY b.Sept 10, 1901 MARY ANN WILDY b.Jan 29, 1904 Since then, I have found on the Social Security Death Index that the above JAMES WILDY b.Sept 10, 1901 DIED IN RANDOLPH CO, IL in July 1981. He lived in Red Bud. If anyone knows of any of his descendants, please pass this message along to them. That is, if you think they'd be interested in the family history document! If this rings a bell with anyone let me know! Julie

On the DeWitt page is a link at the bottom to the 1860 Census. I have included McLean and Logan Counties because many of the names are the same in all three counties. I use to live on a farm in DeWitt, go to school at Ben Funk Elem in McLean, and ride my horse to the west farm in Logan. Hope you enjoy, Bob Halsey [email protected] Viera, FL
