I have added to the page more of the BORN, BOUND and BURIED columns sent to me by Lacinda. Sorry there isn't a way for me to index this. (Well there is probably a way but I don't know how to). I think we all owe a very big thank you to Lacinda for making all of this available to us. We now have all the columns for the year 1879 (I think). Earliene [email protected]
Hi all, I found some new names for my DeWitt connections. Maybe someone has a bit more info. on them?? Jessie NORTH, m. Rosa COWELL Viola NORTH, m. Frank HENSON Harry NORTH, m. Rosetta Belle WEBB All of these are reported to have taken place in DeWitt County. Hey Earliene, I think I found my elusive John P(reston) North!! (Born: 24 Aug 1844 Place: Columbus, Ohio, son of John and Jane (?) North) It seems most of my North's are buried at Rose Cemetery, in unmarked graves. When I am in DeWitt, maybe I'll try "grave divining", although I'll probably only find water! :) Kaylynn [email protected]
Here I go again, I think now I am back up to speed. Hopefully that is the last of the computer problems for awhile. I would like any of you that have asked something of me and gotten no answer to get in touch with me again. One of the first and only things I lost was my e-mail and the addresses to go with it. The same goes for those I correspond with regularly, please send your addresses. Now there was someone that was looking for the surname STONE and I did some research for them. Will you please contact me, I have another researcher asking for information and you may be able to help them. Meanwhile if I can help anyone else, please feel free to contact me. I have received a treasure box of old photographs, including the wedding photo of John B. and Adora (McArthur) Morris taken in Springfield OH in 1868 and an individual portrait photo of John B. One of the children's photos could be one of their daughters. I have not found any descendants of John and Adora ... does anyone connect with the following? ....... or does anyone have any clues? JOHN B. MORRIS b 21 July 1839 Harmony Twp., Clark Co., OH, s/o James and Martha (Henry) Morris. John grew up on the family farm in Harmony Twp; his father died when he was 7, but his mother and older brothers kept the farm going. John enlisted in the OH VOLS (don't know which unit), fought in the Civil War, returned to Clark Co. and m ADORA McARTHUR in 1868. They moved to DeWitt Co., IL where he farmed; he died 20 January 1885 in DeWitt Co., IL He and Adora had 6 children; Adora and the children returned to OH after his death ... and that's where my info ends. Can anyone steer me to descendants of any of the following children? McArthur Morris b Feb 1870 Barnett Twp., DeWitt Co., IL Curtis Morris b c 1872 DeWitt Co., IL Martha Morris b c 1873 " " m Unknown MORGAN Olive Morris b c 1875 " " Bessie Morris b c 1877 " " m Unknown BIDWELL William H. Morris b c 1879 " " Also in the box of photos was one of John's mother, Martha "Patsy" Henry Morris (d/o William Henry and Elizabeth Johnson) taken when she was in her 80's ... I'd kill anyone who took my picture when I was that old, but I have it anyone ... she was once young and beautiful with masses of red hair, it is said! Michelle Rush/St. Charles, IL [email protected]

I little time off for my research. This is a sideline but still related and I would like more information on this family if you have any to share: William Randolph b. 1793 From the 1882 history: "Another prominent old settler was William RANDOLPH, who was a native of NC (census says VA). He moved with his father to VA when he was a mere lad, where he remained until he grew to manhood. In the fall of 1830 he moved with his family to this township (Tunbridge). His family consisted of his wife (Matilda) and eight children, Levi, Love, Polly, Willoughby, Sarah, William, Josiah, and J.H. (John H.). His mode of transit was the Southern style four-horse crooked bed wagon, which was driven by one of the parties who rode the wheel horse using one line. The first house occupied was a pole cabin with a stick chimney, and the ground for a floor. The spring following he traded one of his horses and the wagon for eighty acres of land of Elisha BUTLER. This was the spring following the winter of the "deep snow". This year Mr. RANDOLPH ploughed and planted a few acres of corn, but the spring being late, and the summer cold, the early frosts cut the crop so severely that it did not mature. It was in such a sappy condition when it was gathered, and being frozen solid, it actually had to be placed before the fire and thawed before it could be fed to the stock. From the fact that there was no sound corn in central Illinois, the few people of this part of the state were obliged to go to the more southern portion to obtain seed corn the following spring, hence the name given to that part of the state, "Egypt". Five other children were born to this family after coming to this section (Selena, Matilda, Moses, Louisa, Adoniram J.), making thirteen in all. Mrs. RANDOLPH died in 1863, at the age of 63 years. Mr RANDOLPH lived to the good old age of 74, and died four years after his wife. The only direct representative of this family living in the county is J. H. RANDOLPH, one of the prominent and substantial farmers of DeWitt County. He was the youngest in the family when his father moved to the state. He is now on section 7, in the old homestead. He married Miss Margaret WALLACE, in the fall of 1853. His wife was the daughter of Colonel Andrew W. WALLACE, another old settler who located on section 6 in 1830, and who was a native of Bourbon County, KY. From this marriage there have been eight children born, Alice, Andrew W., Charles C., Laura, Grace, Moses W., Ivan Lee, and one infant son that died without a name. Mr RANDOLPH is one of the leading stock growers in the country. He has some of the finest blooded sheep in the state, and is said to be the heaviest wool grower in Tunbridge." I WOULD LOVE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE ABOVE FAMILY. Earliene [email protected] / [email protected]
I apologize for the playing around with the Obit page. I am trying to link them so that I can get them in index from and haven't figured that out yet and as you may notice I am still learning to use the editor. I have managed to get the ones on there in alphabetical order for you. Please hang in there with me I am getting it slowly but surely. All this looks a lot easier than it is to me. I know that there are some of you out there that could do this in a flash if you had the time. If there is anyone who thinks they can give me hints or shortcuts on how to learn faster please do. Just try to remember that I do love all these ancestors and do want to do justice to them, I am just real dumb in the computer dept. I can say this as I sit at my desk with reams of printed paper all telling me a different way to do this HTML thing. I have three new programs and still have to figure out the "tags" and where they need to go. I think I am making way too HARD but that is the way I do everything.... I have located the volume and page number for eight couples that were married in DeWitt County. I am looking for an economical method of obtaining copies of the marriage. Does the DeWitt County Library have the marriage books? Would appreciate any advise. Art [email protected]
These were kindly sent to me by Lacinda and I will be posting them to the DeWitt County page. They are from the Clinton Register Earliene [email protected] 2/1895 Walden A Mother in Isarel Called Home Mrs. Sallie WALTERS WALDEN was born in DeWitt County on the 8th of August, 1829, and died at her home, in almost the same neighborhood in which she was born, last Monday, Febuary 4th, aged Sixty-five years. She was married to James Walden September 14, 1848, and began housekeeping on the farm where she died. Seven sons were born to them and all are living- John W., David H., James F., Robert T., Willis E., Oliver M., and Dwight. The six older boys are married and are settled on farms of their own and are engaged in the stock business. Robert is a School Teacher, and Dwight is the bachelor of the family. Twenty-eight grand children and one great grand child survive her. Mr. James WALDEN is nearing his threescore years and ten. His wife was truly a helpmate to him. She was a woman of remarkable energy, and when her children were young and Mr. WALDEN was an invalid she managed the entire business and made it profitable. Mrs. WALDEN was an earnest Christian woman, and her home was always open to the entertainment of the Ministers of RUCKER CHAPEL. She was zealous in good works. Mrs. WALDEN always took a warn interest in politics and she was an intense Republican. Always during political campaigns she entertained the Republican speakers and the glee club when meetings were held in her neighborhood. Her aged partner will miss her more than all the others, for they had spent nearly fifty years together. 3/1895 Wand A sad death occurred in Farmer City last Monday. A. M. WAND is the proprietor of a store in that town, and for years his health has been so poor that his wife had to take an active part in the management of the business. The WANDS moved to Farmer City and were engaged in a general store business in the Young & Gould building, which was burned down last September. They lost heavily by the fire, but they got another building and moved into it the remnant of the stock saved and tried it again. In January they got back to the old stand in a new building, and while Mrs. WAND was in Chicago buying goods she caught cold, which developed into Typhoid fever, and then death. Mrs. WAND was only thirty-two years old. She was a woman of indomitable energy, and on account of her husband's sickly condition the whole burden of the business rested on her. 3/1895 Clark Caroline WINSLOW CLARK, grandmother of Dell CROWDEN, a compositor in the Register office, died at Dell's home in this city last Sunday morning, and on Monday her remains were interred at Woodlawn. The aged lady was born in Butternut, Oswego County, NY, November 30, 1813. On the 31st of October, 1839, at Rome, NY., she was united in marriage to Welcome S. CLARK. Six children were born to them, Mrs. E.J. CROWDEN being one of her daughters. The family came to Illinois in 1853, and settled at Freeport, and in 1876 her husband died. Mrs. CLARK was a member of the Seventh Day Adventists, having joined that church in 1877, and of which she remained a faithful member. She came to Clinton about five years ago to live with her daughter, Mrs. E.J. CROWDEN, and for the past two years has been an invalid. At the ripe age of eighty-two years she joined her husband and children in the world beyond. Rev. D. MACARTHUR had charge of the funeral services and made an impressive talk. 1/5/1922 Phares Former Resident Dies in Decatur Oscar PHARES, aged 66, formerly a prominent farmer of Texas township, but for the past two years a resident of Decatur, died in his home in that city at 1:30 o'clock this morning. The cause of death is said to be hardening of the arteries. The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William PHARES, for many years, residents of DeWitt County. He was born in Texas township in 1856 and lived there on the home farm until two years ago, when, with his brother and the latter's family, he moved to Decatur, where he had since resided. He was well known by many residents of Clinton and DeWitt County. Mr. PHARES is survived by his brother, William, and two sisters, Mrs. Howard RHEA and Mrs. Clarence ZEIGLER, both residents of Decatur. He was a cousin of Mrs. T.W. CACKLEY, Mrs. Dick BRYANT, and J.A. PHARES of Clinton. His parents died several years ago. The body will be brought to Clinton Saturday. Funeral Services will be held in the Oakman chapel Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. M. G. LINTON, Pastor, of the Universalist Church; officiating. Interment will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery. 1\1922 McFadden Nonagenarian Dies in DeLand Mrs. Mary A. McFADDEN, aged 98 years, died at her home in DeLand, Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, following a stroke of paralysis several weeks ago. Her condition had grown gradually worse since the stroke. Mrs. McFADDEN had been a resident of Piatt County since 1857. Mary Ann MECHLING was born in Armstrong County, PA. Dec. 13, 1823. She was married to Henry S. McFADDEN, in April 1842. In 1857 they moved to Illinois, first locating near Monticello. Later they purchased 320 acres of land near DeLand. Mr. McFADDEN doed June 10, 1903. Following his death Mrs. McFADDEN moved to DeLand, where she with her daughter Emma had occupied a modern cottage since. She is survived by eight children: John M. CLAY of Clay Center, Neb., Mrs. Finny BOYER, Harry S. McFADDEN, and Miss Emma McFADDEN, all of DeLand: Mrs. Sarah BLANCHARD of Los Angeles: Mrs. Louis BEAN of Chicago: Mrs. Juliette FRANCES of Knoxville, and Frank McFADDEN of Marion Neb. All of her children were at the bedside when the end came. Funeral services will be conducted in the home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon by Rev. Royal W. ENNIS of the Methodist Church Burial will be in the DeLand Cemetery. 1/1920 COGDAL Mrs. W.N. PULLEN, 604 North Central Street, attended the funeral of her cousin, Mrs. Sally REEDER COGDAL, which was held in Bloomington yesterday afternoon from St. Mathew's Episcopal church. Deceased was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. James REEDER, her father having been sheriff of McLean County at one time. Mrs. COGDAL resided in Michigan and was home on a visit to her parents when she was taken ill with pneumonia and died. She is survived by her husband and parents.

Hi, I don't know who to contact to get the whole ILDEWITT-D Digest. An example is on Volume 99 : Issue 35, there are seven messages listed and I got only the header for message 1 and none of messages 2 through 7. My service provider said I would have to contact the administrator of this mailing list and notify them of this situation. Could someone please help me. If I sent this to the wrong email I apologize and would appreciate the right email to send my request for help to. Thank you. Irene [email protected]
I am going to Clinton on Monday. I am willing to do one obit look up per person while I am there. Obits in Clinton are not indexed, so I must have the exact date of death in order to find it. Providing you are willing to pay the copy charges and postal charges if you wish to have it mailed to you. Copies at the Clinton Library are 10 cents. There are no guarantees that the obit will be listed in the paper. I have found many times that my family died and was buried in Clinton but that there was no obit listed. The older the papers get the less information that you find. Please contact me privately so that we don't cause a lot of traffic on the mailing list. Lacinda has sent an article from the Clinton Paper regarding the William Hogg family. Both she and I feel that descendants may want this article but that it is inappropriate to post to the list. Any descendants of this family can e-mail me and I will forward the article dated 10/24/1879. I don't know about the rest of you but I owe Lacinda a big debt of thanks for her postings.
