I have quite a few things on this page now. Nothing under Odds and Ends but Tunbridge and Santa Anna Township histories are up and mention several pioneering families, also have several Bio's from the 1882 History up. Check them out and enjoy http://www.rootsweb.com/~ildewitt/historiesindex.htm Earliene Kaelin [email protected] or [email protected] 1118 156th St. East Tacoma, WA. 98445-2324
With many thanks to Rootsweb and List Owners: I would like to share with you the information I have compiled from National Archives microfilm reels regarding the personal data of 1,691 enlisted soldiers who served in our very young U.S. Army, between 1835 & 1846. These men came from a multitude of locales, including Europe and Canada. All served various amounts of time in Western New York before their enlistment expired, or, were sent elsewhere, to camps and forts scattered across the states and territories. It is without doubt, that descendants of these men encompass the globe. Are you related to one? Interested subscribers to ILDEWITT-L should send an email to: [email protected] For the subject, please put INTERESTED! In the text, I would just like to know your name and your location, please. (ie.) BUBBA in Butte, Montana Thank you! Cliff in Rochester, New York
Just so you all know, I am having more and more trouble with my computer freezing. If you email me and don't get anything back for a while, it will be because of that. Sorry if this inconveniences anyone!! Lara
Below is the request of a new person, Can anyone out there help further? I have what I found listed below his message. QUERY: My grandfather Stout had as either his first name or middle name "Franklin". I think he died in the late 1920's. That is all I know. My father Claude Stout was born in 1905 in DeWitt county. The surname is Stout. Any Stouts buried there before 1940 are relatives. My paternal grandfather and grandmother are there. I very much would like to get his and her full name and birth/deceased dates. My grandfather Stout had as either his first name or middle name "Franklin". I think he died in the late 1920's. That is all I know. My father Claude Stout was born in 1905 in DeWitt county. I thank you for any help you can give. Frank Stout [email protected] Frank I am afraid this won't be much help but will at least get you started. I did not find the marriage of the parents of your Grandfather nor did I find Benjamin listed on the 1870 census as a three year old. You need to find the family in the 1880 census and I do not have that here. I have posted this to this list in hopes someone else can help you. Cannot access the floppy drive , the CD rom or anything. Wish me luck and say a prayer to the Great Computer God. I cannot believe this could happen on a brand new system.... I have added a Township map on the under "The Maps of DeWitt" Also have the Obits indexed so it would be easier for those looking to find someone they know. I will be adding obits as I get them so keep checking back. You can also look forward to bio's and other articles from both the County histories, but be patient on that it will take some time, try to remember I am still just learning. I know that the Newspaper article page is really long and I am open to suggestions on how to separate those, I have tried to think how to do that but have not come up with a good way. I hope that you all are enjoying seeing the new information. Have a great day and remember I love getting things to post. On the Newspaper abstract section for the DeWitt County page, I am adding the articles to the bottom for the time being. For those of you who haven't checked it out please do, we are posting articles that name many of the early settlers, some will make you giggle some will be sad but it tells us how they lived their lives. I am so lucky to have so many contributing articles and I do appreciate it. Here is the address to the page in case some of you do not have it: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ildewitt/ The news articles are under Newspaper abstracts and of course all the new Obits are under Obituaries. Hopefully soon I will be adding Bio pages back so get your stuff ready. Earliene Kaelin [email protected] or [email protected] 1118 156th St. East Tacoma, WA. 98445-2324

Just added the article below that Lacinda sent to the Newspaper abstracts, but it is so wonderful I thought I would share it with the list: 7/13/1906 RETURNED FROM KENTUCKY Mr. Tillman LANE and wife returned last week from the great Kentucky Home coming and they report one of the most enjoyable experiences of their lives. The citizens of Thompkinsville, thirty miles from Glasgow, heard that Mr. and Mrs. LANE were coming and a veritable ovation awaited them. Some home comer arrived in advance, and told the people of the aged town in the hills, that a gentleman who had founded and given his name to a good town in Illinois, was returning to visit Thompkinsville, after an absence of seventy-nine years. Mr. and Mrs. LANE, greatly surprised a delegation of kind-hearted people who expected to help an aged couple on tottering feet, when the latter saw their nimbleness. Mr. LANE distinctly remembered the scenes of his childhood, though but four years old when his father Ezekial LANE and, grandfather Tillman LANE emigrated to Long Point, DeWitt county, in 1827. Mr. and Mrs. LANE attended worship in an old log church adjacent to a cemetery in which the remains of their grandparents rest. Mr. LANE will give a talk at the annual "Old Four Families" reunion, which will be held at Weldon Springs in September. Added three pages on Obits to the County page that was sent to by Bob Halsey. Hope it helps one of you. Thank You BOB! I am caught up so if any of you want to send any obits feel free. Earliene Kaelin [email protected] or [email protected] 1118 156th St. East Tacoma, WA. 98445-2324
In a message dated 4/19/99 8:48:16 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Below is the address for the IRAD (Illinois Regional Archives Dept.) that > holds the records for DeWitt and the listing of what records they have. > The fees are VERY inexpensive and the information invaluable. ****** I am assuming that you have to contact the IRAD by snail mail. Correct? Bonnie Vance Miller
To follow up on the IRAD files: Note that they hold the marriage license applications for 1876-1935. These can sometimes be invaluable as they contain more information that you would find on the marriage record. Also the Delayed birth records are great but when you get these records be aware that they are only as good as the information given at the time. As I found with my great grandmother who gave false information when applying for hers. These were generally filed when no original birth record was filed and generally after 1935 when you needed a birth certificate to get a Social Security card. Now does anyone know which Funeral homes in DeWitt County have older records? This is another invaluable source for information. They generally have a copy of the obit in the records along with named relatives etc. Much more information than what is on a death certificate. I will try to gather all of this type information when and if I get to make my trip back this summer. I will let everyone know when that takes place. Meanwhile if anyone that lives in the area will contact me privately I would gladly send copying fees for any information I can post on the list and on the county page. Remember this has to be public record and not under copyright laws... Just so that you all know my mailing address is listed below, feel free to snd anything you think will be legal to post. I will gather up typists.. Thanks for all your support and I have decided for the time being to keep the page for us. So only the query page will be maintained by GenConnect. Later this may change but for now I will just keep at it. Earliene [email protected] or [email protected] 1118 156th Street East Tacoma, WA. 98445-2324

I would like to ask the opinion of you on the list. I am trying to decide whether I should try to keep the obituaries maintained myself or let GenConnect do the job. There are minus and plus's on both sides. If I keep it we have a little more control but you will have to put up with my inability's in this HTML thing. If I give it to GenConnect we have less control but the data is accessed by the national searches. I have decided to let all of you have your say and then I will decide. After all this is your page. Earliene [email protected]
I just heard on the news about the shooting in SLC. One, maybe two, gunmen opened fire at the Family History Library. One librarian and one security guard are dead, with others wounded. It's been on FoxNews and CNN so you can tune in there for more details. We need some prayers for the victims. Kaylynn
