I strongly recommend "Family Tree Maker" and suggest getting the 'deluxe' version. They have a website where you can download a sample of it's capabilities: http://www.familytreemaker.com The resource cd's that they provide are tremendous. All the libraries I have been to, if they have genealogy software, have Family Tree Maker. Lara
I am planning on buying some Genealogy software, such as Ultimate Family Tree Deluxe, and was hoping that one or more of you would be so kind as to rate/review/recommend one program or another. There are a lot of them out there, and given that my money and time are limited, I would benefit from your experience. I would also very much appreciate it! Special thanks to all of the many contributors out there that make this list a success!
GenConnect computer is down so you will not be able to leave queries today. They hope to have it back up as soon as possible. Meanwhile you just can't access that information or at best it will be very slow. Sorry. If some kind soul with access to the 1900 Illinois census index would look up the ED number for Amos Dick Maxwell I would be most grateful. Art [email protected]

Pamela, I might possible have a picture of the tombstone. Give me some time to check and I'll get back to you. Lara
Oy, I don't mean to sound negative and I'm sorry if I do, but it's motivating me to post my surnames for this county again. I read through all the histories and biographies, and you would think I would find something, but nada. I'm so up against a brick wall with these lines. Okay, I'll just make a general query first. Is there anybody on this list who are researching any of the following surnames for DeWitt County? DAY ( the only mention was of Benjamin S. Day who is a sibling of my ancestor William Sublett Day), Isham or Olson, MILLER, MORROW, MUSICK, PIATT, ROBERTS, SUMMERS, TENBROOK, or TEN BROECK? Please if you are, contact me so I can see if we connect somewhere. Especially on the Morrow and Summers line's. Karen Abbott

I am sure that I am not alone in my thanks and appreciation for your efforts in making this wonderful resource available. There is so much more to genealogy than places, names and dates. Historical details not only add color and interest to our recollections of their lives, they provide clues for us to follow the turn of events, changes of residence, motivating influences, etc. in their lives. They help us to fill in the gaps and read between the lines. Our ancestors' time and place had as much to do with who they were as who their own ancestors were. And so it us with us today. We all owe much to the labor and sacrifices of our ancestors and their neighbors. And inasmuch as you have helped me to better understand and appreciate this, I am sure they would want to add their thanks to mine. Well done. In closing, special thanks for providing "the rest of the story" regarding the bronze plaque north of Clinton recalling the "Lone Elm." I have wondered about this for years, since spotting it on a small boulder alongside one of the county roads. Things like this make my residence seem even more like home. Glen Elam

I have posted several more Biographies from the 1882 History on the site. Hope you find your ancestor there. Well, I finally did it. The History of all thirteen Townships as told in the "1882 HISTORY OF DeWITT COUNTY " are transcribed and under the "From the Histories" page. WHEW!!!!!!! I hope you will browse through them all. I made the mistake of reading only the ones my ancestors were in and missed several references to them. There is much to learn in these passages. Many pioneer families are named, along with the places they came from. Just remember that there are many errors in relationships and places of origin, so only use this work as a guide. I am still working on getting the biographies transcribed. I hope to have those done soon. So go in and Read, Read, Read. What if you sent a letter to the two Frosts you did find in the phone book? Just tell them who you are, why you are writing, and what you are hoping to accomplish. Lara

I am looking for information about the ancestors and/or decendents of the following family: John E. Dugan (born: May 3, 1858 in Greenup, IL, died: Aug. 13, 1930 at Clinton, DeWitt, IL, buried: Texas Cemetary, Clinton, IL),who married, at Clinton, DeWitt, IL on Aug. 10, 1879, Rosetta M. Burns (I don't have any further information on her although I suspect that she is also buried at Texas Cemetary, DeWitt, IL) Any help and information that can be provided about the families of these two people will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!! Rich Fouke
Check out Bob Halsey's page: http://members.aol.com/rehfla/elihalsey/texas.htm His listing for Texas Christian Cemetery has Listings for both John E. and Rosetta Dugan. There are also Burns listings that are the approximate age of her parents. He also has marriage listings in his lookups but I didn't see a reference in the marriage listings (1870-1879) for either bride or groom. Good luck!
